The Fatally Invulnerable Problem

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 5:30 am

Low and behold, I return again in a likely ill-fated attempt at fixing the problem that has been plaguing my probably once-again-doomed installation of Morrowind. What I am trying to fix is a conflict between startscripts added by chargen revamped version 1.4, chargen revamped w/ diseases, chargen revamped delay 2, and Magicka Based Skill Advancement.

Now, down to the nitty gritty. My game has been rendered virtually unplayable on account of the fact that a startscript added by Magicka Based Skill Advancement, which starts up with the creation of a new game, is tampering with the scripts added by, assumedly, chargen delay2. In effect, this renders the scripts added by chargen revamped delay2 - which adds a slight delay in between the chargen menus added/modified by chargen revamped 1.4 - completely useless. That is, although the mod chargen revamped delay2 IS in fact present, the menus added by chargen revamped 1.4 all appear at once, which in turn entraps me in the chargen "room of no return" added by chargen revamped 1.4.

Furthermore, upon attempting to simply deactivate/remove the problem mod, which seems to be Magicka Based Skill Advancement, the game simply crashes when a "new game" is initiated.

To me, the simplest solution seems like it would be to somehow transfer the startscripts added by Magicka Based Skill Advancement onto a tangible in-game item, removing them from the chargen process all together.

The problem lies therein; I have no clue which scripts are added by Magicka Based Skill Advancement, how to go about finding them, how to re-attach them to an in-game item, how to remove them from the chargen process, or if this is even a feasible solution to the problem I am experiencing.

Please post your ideas, comments, or other possible solutions.

I appreciate all your comments and consideration. Good day. :)

Few things:
It'd really help to have a copy of your mod list. Ideally in load order, from Wrye Mash; but if you haven't got Mash then please post the mod list from your morrowind.ini

Similarly, a copy of the contents of your warnings.txt

Is there anything in the readmes of these chargen mods? Without knowing I'd guess that "chargen revamped version 1.4" and "chargen revamped w/ diseases" sound like they could conflict. You say that starting a new game without "Magicka Based Skill Advancement" causes a CTD, that implies the problem is not with that mod.

CHargen revamped 1.4 and w/ diseases are, in fact, compatible. I've been playing with the two together for years now. I don't have the patience to post a mods list right now, as I've already done so for this very problem half a dozen times so far, but I will get around to it. :P

Anyways, thanks for your help. Hopefully you'll have more advice once I get around to posting my warnings and such. XD

Warnings:
Not able to find Foot part in BC_shoes_common_1.
Expression Error Unable to find object "light_de_paper_lantern_64_01_of" in script LBS_l_de_pp_lantern_64_01.
Texture "Data Files\Textures\candleoff.dds" count 3.
Texture "Textures\_land_default.tga" count 3.
Texture "Data Files\Textures\vfx_whitestar.dds" count 3.
Texture "Data Files\Textures\Tx_wood_brown_box_01.dds" count 2.

Nothing that really seems crash-worthy or game-breaking there, but I could be mistaken.

The biggest problem I want to solve here is how to attach the script from MWE Magicka Spells to an in-game object, and just remove them from the start sequence all together.

There's a counter in MWE_MagickaSpells.esp before its setup script kicks off. But if you're running at 30 fps then it only delays for 1/3 of a second (counts to 10 @ one tick per frame).

All three of these mods alter the "DG_CharGen" script:
CharGen_Revamped_v14.esp
CharGen Revamped wDiseases.esp
CharGen Revamped delay2.esp

CharGen_Revamped_v14.esp is the original, "CharGen Revamped delay2.esp" adds a one second delay to the "DG_CharGen" script starting and "CharGen Revamped wDiseases.esp" adds the disease options. Basically you can't have the effects from both the delay mod and the disease mod at once.

So... I'd suggest deactivating "CharGen Revamped delay2.esp" for now and see what happens. That way you'll at least get the disease options (which I assume you want in this play through).

If you still have issues then also deactivate "MWE_MagickaSpells.esp" until you're finished with character generation (as you shouldn't be casting spells anyway), save and then reactivate the mod. Clean your save with Wrye Mash and then load up the game and see what happens.

Generic Wrye Mash instructions follow:
With Wrye Mash installed follow this procedure to clean a savegame:
Firstly, initial cleaning of your installed mods:
(1) On the Mods tab all mods should have a green checkbox.
(2) If any mods have a yellow checkbox, select them and then look for the
Save button in the bottom right. Click that and the mod file will be
updated and the error removed. The error just means that the mod was
created with an earlier version of Morrowind to the one you're using.
Saving in Mash will update this version info.
(3) If you have any mods with red checkboxes then you do not have a ESM
file needed by that mod loaded. Check the mod's readme.
Secondly, cleaning your savegames:
(4) Onto the Saves tab, select the savegame you want to fix.
(5) When the savegame is selected the list in the bottom right will be
populated with the mods currently associated with the savegame.
(6) Right click the column headers ("File" and "Num") and choose Sync to
Load List (this will change the mods associated with the savegame to
match those currently selected on the Mods tab).
(7) Click Save
(8) Right click the savegame and choose Repair All.
(8a) Optionally, right click the savegame and choose Remove > Debris Cells.
(9) The checkbox for the save should now be purple.

Finally, there's this error in warnings.txt:
Expression Error Unable to find object "light_de_paper_lantern_64_01_of" in script LBS_l_de_pp_lantern_64_01

I guess that some mod has interfered with Light Based Sneaking, maybe TLM? Not sure. You can try running running a Single vs All check in TESPCD with Light Based Sneaking as the single mod.

Yeah, so I guess there was one little teensie weensie error I forgot to post when I posted all the other warnings. This particular one is the one that is causing the CTD when I try to run a new game without Magicka Based Spell Advancement.

Not able to find Foot part in BC_shoes_common_1.
Expression Error Unable to find object "light_de_paper_lantern_64_01_of" in script LBS_l_de_pp_lantern_64_01.
Expression Error Unable to find global variable "_MWE_HECasting" in script _MWE_MagickaSpells.

In short, running the game without the Chargen delay did absolutely nothing, and running without MBSA causes CTDs. Bleh. :(

Er... Colour me confuzzled.

So, there's an error reported in "_MWE_MagickaSpells", which is a script from a mod you're not running!?!

Run http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1167004-relz-mlox-a-tool-for-anolyzing-and-sorting-your-load-order/ to sort your load order out. Double check you're using v1.6 of MWE (downloaded in the "dev kit", IIRC)

Double, double check that "MWE_MagickaSpells.esp" is deactivated in the Morrowind Launcher. Start a new game.

It's weird. In your mod list it's "GameFile99=MWE_MagickaSpells.esp" when morrowind.ini arranges names alphabetically. I'd expect it to be in the 50s / 60s somewhere
