The fate of Fast Travel in Skyrim

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 11:32 am

Well it isn't my question, Pete never answers mine  Also, he answered in chronological order, his first answer of better than Oblivion was a response to the question of fast travel and the answer of Skyrim being the best BGS game made is an answer to if Skyrim was better than Oblivion. That's how I took it anyhow.

Well... I know thats how you and everyone wants to look at it. :)

But, unfortunately that isn't the case.

@DCDeacon Hey! What about fast travel in Skyrim? Is it gonna be like in Oblivion? I mean I really miss going out exploring more!
@DCDeacon And... Will Skyrim be better than Oblivion?

@KEN_Hauge Not talking about fast travel yet. Still working on some things. Yes, better than Oblivion. Best game BGS has ever made.

As you can see, its still answered in chronological order, and he answers each question with two sentences. I've already explain as well that "Yes, better" would not be the right answer to "Is it the same?"

Seems clear to me that he isn't saying anything about fast travel.

why doesnt somebody ask this? that way we can get that answer out in the open then all the complainin can start lol

I think the question is really still too open, one literally needs to ask, "is there an immersive in-game fast travel system recognized by the world like f. ex. carriages, wagons, and such?"

To which he's going to say "we're not talking about fast travel just yet." So there's really no point.

People, don't get too excited. That could just as easily mean, you can now use it indoors too. :)

Even with standard Oblivion fast travel, I think they could make it better by having it deposit you at a distance away from the marker, calculated based on whether or not there are hostiles nearby, your "perception" (or whatever the Oblivion equivalent was) and the direction you are coming from. Sometimes you'd end up a short distance from your destination, but able to see that there are Minotaurs standing there waiting for you. Other times you'd be dumped right in the middle of the Minotaurs, like they had ambushed you.

It's not misreading. Why would he answer if the game is better than Oblivion twice with basically the same answer? He answered the fast travel by saying he can't go into detail at this time. Then he answered the question, if the fast travel in Skyrim would be better than in Oblivion which he answered yes. And then he answered if Skyrim would be better than Oblivion and he answered that it was the best BGS game. Nothing was misread.

@Sleign Dude, just because people disagree with you, doesn't mean we like to complain a lot, it just means we disagree.

It is complaining when people have problems with each and every thing announced about Skyrim. It's always the same people and when they run out of complaining about one thing in Skyrim, they go to something else. They ran out of things to complain so they moved to complaining about the font in the Menu of Skyrim....Really? The font? The font is a typical font, it's not hard to read or anything yet they have to have something wrong with it....

I sure hope he's implying something of Morrowind's fast travel system. That was awesome. I'm really hoping for that.... something immersive.

But perhaps Bethesda has come up with a better solution.

Still... I'll be pretty happy as long as:

- you can't fast travel from the middle of nowehere to anywhere (should only be restricted to towns from towns, I think).
- has an immersive explanation rather than clicking on the map and *poof* you're there.
- has some downsides, whether they are very small or big doesn't matter. As long as it's a downside (ex: pay gold for travel services as in Morrowind).

He is reaffirming his answer. "Yes, Skyrim will be better than Oblivion. Best game we've ever made." Is not the same. To me, it makes less sense that he would say "Yes, it is the same and better"(which itself makes no sense, because it can't be the same if its better) after saying he can't talk about it.

I see where you are coming from, but it just doesn't make as much sense.

Emphasis. Very common type of speech.

He was never asked if Fast Travel would be better than Oblivion. He was asked if it would be the same. The answer makes no sense in relation to that question.

I could live with only being able to fast travel from a village or city but I'm not okay with the return of Morrowind's fast travel system....

He is reaffirming his answer. "Yes, Skyrim will be better than Oblivion. Best game we've ever made." Is not the same. Well it makes more sense that he would answer each question and the answers correspond perfectly, so I'm not sure why they don't make sense. But you can believe what you want, I'll just go with the information that is apparent.

*poof* is walkin... and in oblivions case it actually worked cause ur faster than everythin

I wouldnt mind the first point if they put sometin similar to mark and recall in but i would want it more like 'puts spell down, warps to town, warps back to previous spot'

You guys are misreading this because you aren't taking into account the second question. He isn't saying anything about Fast-Travel other than he can't talk about it. The rest is just saying that Skyrim will be better than Oblivion.

Oblivion's fast travel felt like *poof* to me, because there was no logical explanation behind it. It feels so unbelievable to just click on your map and you're there.
I want some explanation, a little logic to it.

Paying a travel service, like in Morrowind, fulfill that need of explanation and logic I need :)
Still, the worst part of Oblivion's was that you could fast travel to ANY location. I would really just prefer cities and some smaller towns...

But then again, that's me ;)

I just don't see why he would have to make an affirmation of his answer he already gave. I didn't see the need to emphasize. Occam's razor says that he meant to make the answers seperate. But of course, Occam's razor isn't always perfect.

But it did have an explanation and to me it gave plenty of immersion. The explanation is that you walk to the destination. The game calculated the time it would take for you to walk/ride to the destination and then it sets the time to what the time would be when you arrived.

To me, in Oblivion, Fast Travel is what you do over the shortest distance possible when you've fallen into a rock mesh and can't get loose. Then you trudge back to where you were when you got stuck.

I don't care about Fast Travel, as long as the game and the quests aren't designed around it. Nobody should design a quest where you go back and forth to the same place five times on the basis that "eh, they'll just use Fast Travel so it doesn't matter".

Occam's razor says that he meant to make the answers seperate. But of course, Occam's razor isn't always perfect.
Occam's Razor says not to complicate an issue with extraneous data. It has no application in a situation where the possibilities are "he said one thing that kinda makes sense and kinda doesn't" and "he said another thing that kinda makes sense and kinda doesn't".

I tried to make tweets. :lmao: The limitation of characters is very annoying. I pretty much doubt he would have wasted some on emphasis ; telegraphic answers do make sense.

Well it has a slight place in this argument. The explanation originally given would be that he answered all the questions while the alternative explanation added another variable saying that he was just emphasizing that Skyrim was better than Oblivion.

With this mindset, you run into the problem that he gave four answers to three questions (and one statement of fact). Either one of the sentences was emphasis to a previous answer, or he responded to the statement of fact. If he responded to the statement of fact, then the responses don't line up the way you'd like them to.

IMO, if the first three sentences were answers to your first tweet, and it was an issue of space, he would have found a way to combine some of those.

I haven't really seen a good explanation as to why he would answer "Yes" to it being the same when he is saying its not the same, but better.

They said the same about oblivion.
When TES VI gets announced they will go on and on on how much Skyrim svcked and how restricting it was, believe me.

Oyeah........the way of life.

Worship the new sequel, berate the installment before it, and then bring about nostalgia from additions before that.

I've seen this in both Skyrim speculation and Fallout NV speculation.

Now I just need a few more examples and its will be a proven fact.

Well to me it wasn't really an explanation, but more of an excuse.
The only "real" thing about Oblivion's fast travel was that time passed.
The explanation that you walked when clicking on the map wouldn't even have to be implied; especially not in an immersive and believable way (at least not to me).
To me, fast travel might has well have been called "teleport-instantly-everywhere-with-passing-time". The experience you would get in the game would have been none different if what I called it would be the case.
