The fate of Fast Travel in Skyrim

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 2:39 pm

So on Pete Hines' twitter feed, I found http://twitter.com/#!/DCDeacon/status/27830032655187969 response when I checked this morning. So it looks like fast travel has gone in a new direction in Skyrim. Also, the "Best game BGS has ever made" is nice too lol.

@KEN_Hauge Not talking about fast travel yet. Still working on some things. Yes, better than Oblivion. Best game BGS has ever made.

"Not talking about fast travel yet. Still working on some things. Yes, better than Oblivion. Best game BGS has ever made."

So it's different in some aspect from Oblivion's fast travel.

Edit: Ninja'd!!!

In reply to:

"@DCDeacon Hey! What about fast travel in Skyrim? Is it gonna be like in Oblivion? I mean I really miss going out exploring more!"

I wonder if that means he has flip flopped on the "Don't like it don't use it" post that pissed so many people off.

@DCDeacon And... Will Skyrim be better than Oblivion? :D

@KEN_Hauge Not talking about fast travel yet. Still working on some things. Yes, better than Oblivion. Best game BGS has ever made.

For those that can't, if that is still the case.

I dunno man, sounds to me like he was saying that Skyrim will be better, not fast-travel. Fast-travel is just going to be the same probably. If I were you I wouldn't have asked the second question, because that just threw things off. Besides... of course he is going to say it will be better.

To clarify I believe "Yes, better than Oblivion. Best game BGS has ever made." Is the answer to your second question, not your first.

They said the same about oblivion.
When TES VI gets announced they will go on and on on how much Skyrim svcked and how restricting it was, believe me.

"Yes, better than Oblivion."

"Is it gonna be like in Oblivion?"

he pretty much answers "Yes,its gonna be like Oblivion better but than Oblivion."

I don't see how he flip flopped, it is still a fast travel just a bit different.

Well he said that the fast travel would be better than in Oblivion. The "Best BGS game ever" was under the premise of talking about all their games hehe.

I'm struggling to think how the Oblivion system could be made 'better'. Frankly it worked perfectly as far as it went. It was just that many people didn't like it

Going back to something like Morrowind - with a mix of teleports, horses, carriages, Dweemer airships, boats or whatever, would be the way to improve it IMO. But there hasn't been any hint yet that such a system is going to be put in place.

I edited my post, but what I was saying is that the "better than Oblivion" part looks more like the answer to your second question, not your first. In any case its muddied because of the second question, we don't know what part of his reply is for which question.

'better' in Bethesda's eyes probably means being able to fast travel inside shops, inside different floors of dungeons.

ie less immersive and certainly not bringing back boats/telporters etc..

Of course because games advance, tec gets better, new ideas emerge, mistake get corrected, etc while I have not played Skyrim I thought Oblivion was the best TES(and MW before that) and I assume Skyrim will be the best TES when it comes out(and my new fav game, Knocking OB to #2).

And I like Fast Travel in OB, saved me from having to use the console like in MW.

Actually, rereading your questions again I'm convinced of it. You didn't ask if fast travel would be better in Skyrim, you asked if it would be the same but he answers "Yes, better than Oblivion." If he had been answering your first question, he would have said "No, better than Oblivion."

This sounds great! Although I hope he doesn't think everyone has to be forced to explorer. Some of us do it willingly.

I wonder if that means he has flip flopped on the "Don't like it don't use it" post that pissed so many people off.

That was just people jumping the gun, yet again. The reply was to someone who asked if fast travel was optional, making it sound like you had to use fast travel, which you don't. People are reacting to the answer, like the question had been, "is there a more immersive form of fast travel in skyrim, then in Oblivion?".

Well it isn't my question, Pete never answers mine  Also, he answered in chronological order, his first answer of better than Oblivion was a response to the question of fast travel and the answer of Skyrim being the best BGS game made is an answer to if Skyrim was better than Oblivion. That's how I took it anyhow.

ye me too. I hope we get a mix between oblivions and Morrowinds, making everybody happy, especially seeing as pretty much everyone in the fast-travel thread could agree to this solution

Good enough for me. :) Pleasing everybody just amounts to making a system of fast travel that's efficient (Oblivion) and has an explanation in-game and a cost (Morrowind), after all.

You guys are misreading this because you aren't taking into account the second question. He isn't saying anything about Fast-Travel other than he can't talk about it. The rest is just saying that Skyrim will be better than Oblivion.

Well I never found any issue with immersion within fast travel in Oblivion, it made sense since you are "walking" to the place. But yeah, there will always be something for the same group of people to complain about. I think they hit an all-time low last night when there were people complaining about the font in the menu of Skyrim.....

You can't know that. Besides he still says they're not talking about it because they're working on some things. If they were planning to go the oblivion route, I don't think they would hesitate to say that.

@Sleign Dude, just because people disagree with you, doesn't mean we like to complain a lot, it just means we disagree.

Mm. Indeed. You couldn't really make the fast travel in Oblivion worse without actually having it deposit you directly in front of the chest holding the mysterious quest object #101 deep within the mysterious abandoned .

So really, any change is bound to be better. Then again, I've been burned with that kind of thinking with Beth before :flamethrower:
