The February Game Informer Cover Thread XIII

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/01/06/february-cover-revealedesv-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim.aspx

"And yeah, once people read this, heads will explode."
- Andy McNamara, Editor-In-Chief of Game Informer

When responding to a question asking how the game looks:

As most of us know the February issue of the Game Informer magazine will feature 14 whole pages of Skyrim information/pictures/awesomeness.
The prestigious cover of the mag will also belong to Skyrim!

This thread is for thoughtful discussion and speculation of the topic and what we think will be revealed. Once the cover has been revealed we can keep all discussions to this series of threads so the mods don't have to spend all their time redirecting people's rants about how the cover is "zomg cool". Once the Mag is shipped to subscribers we can post small bits of information to share with other forum members who don't subscribe to GI.

For information on the rules of posting info on the magazine click on this http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1149624-do-not-post-magazine-scans-transcripts-or-links-to-either/.

It seems people keep missing the above Magnificent http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1149624-do-not-post-magazine-scans-transcripts-or-links-to-either/ GO READ THAT BEFORE POSTING ABOUT THE ARTICLE PLEASE. It covers the forum rules on Scans, Transcripts and Links. Thank you - Outlander

Fortunately Todd Howard has already stated that "when we show it, we want to show a lot, because there's a lot of game there to play right now." http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-16-todd-howard-working-on-two-new-games

Here is the link to the Game Informer article on the matter: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/12/13/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-coming-next-issue.aspx

Here is the link to the Bethesda Podcast in which Todd Howard touches on the subject: http://www.bethblog.com/podcast/
(They start talking about GI around the 6:50 mark in the podcast if anyone just wants to skip to it.) - Wahoo

"They saw a lot [Game Informer visited the office of Bethesda last week] and I think, I hope, everybody is surprised with how much stuff were showing. It's... it's a lot. We wanted to sorta compress the amount of time that we talked about the game. It's still eleven months, it's a long time, but traditionally we're going on like two years talking about a game, so we start out very slow and we wanted to come out of the gate with a lot of... A lot of STUFF. So I think the fans will be excited."
- Todd Howard

"And wait until you see what this game is all about! Mind...blown..."
- Andrew Reiner

"Our Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim coverage has expanded from 12 pages to 14, making it our largest game-based cover story."
- Andrew Reiner http://twitter.com/#!/Andrew_Reiner

If anyone has any other information then post it here and I will add it to the first post.

That cover is...unfortunate. With every other cover they have original art, but for Skyrim they just use the first thing you see on the official site? LAME.

A dark and mysterious cover for a dark story in a white land. Awesome!

Everyone is welcome to their opinion of the cover. And it certainly won't be the only cover design we use.

I will say that if you see it in person, with the embossed logo, it looks really classy.

So much pessimism towards the cover. I mean did you really expect something other than this? Did you expect a screenshot of the game or something?

My god. Just because the cover is underwhelming doesn't mean Skyrim isn't worth your time and that the devs played a trick on you. If anything, I like the cover. It's very simplistic, yet bold. And, as with everything Elder Scrolls related, it's very secretive, but contains a lot of information.

At least we'll finally be able to figure out what the chorus is saying in the theme from the trailer. And what the story is about. Most "glamorous" covers don't do that now, do they?

Well, I was expecting something a bit different of what we already had. I wanted to see something like an artwork so I could get a glimpse of what to expect.

That's why I was disappointed...
But, it indeed looks classy, I like simple and minimalistic stuff.

I loved the cover.

To all those that are disappointed.

First of all, it was already tweeted what was on the cover yesterday(the basics"Black with Skyrim Logo)

Second, the cover is not just this symbol alone, but uses special printing techniques to make it stand out. It looks VERY classy, and surely better than some fan art that may or may not be representative of game.

Third, this is the first cover in history to my knowledge to have encrypted essential story details on a cover of a magazine. Awesome idea, and again, story info is better than some art work.

And last of all, inside lies the biggest (14 pages!) cover story GI has ever done. Complete with tons of info on Story, Gameplay, Engine, and more. Plus 20 huge detailed screens.

How in the world can anyone be upset with GI and Bethesda over this.
If you expected more, then you weren't listening, and if you aren't happy with all we are getting, your lofty expectations are unsatisfiable.

I'm just remembering every time anything was shown ever before Oblivion. This is exactly like that. Every single thing is an indication to some people that the series is dead and ruined FOREVER and that the devs are personally insulting them by deliberately making a terrible product for clammy green-skinned casual gamers. So I wouldn't put too much store in that and just wait for the actual information to start surfacing.

I'm sure it does, but its certainly not deserving of 12 threads of discussion. Just feels a bit underwhelming, since its basically nothing new. Hopefully the back poem is somewhat enlightening and contains something interesting. Looking forward to the translation.

You know, I get this...but then why not have the unveiling be sent out as a hard copy? Why bring the cover out in a medium where it loses all impact? It just makes no sense. If I were designing something that was wonderful in person, but lost all impact in a slide deck...well, then I'd probably preso it in person and not in a slide deck. If they wanted to unveil the cover online first, that's cool, they should have done some art or something that grabbed your attention. They still could have done the cover for the physical mag the way they wanted. They should have presented the cover relative to the fan base and where that fan base would be seeing the cover. I'm looking forward to getting the physical copy and I'm sure it's going to be gorgeous, but they really missed an opportunity for the online cover...and even though it may be GI's call, it still reflects poorly on Beth, which I'm not crazy about. You guys work too hard to have a cover flop like this.

dont worry about them. at a sales and design standpoint its near perfect. Extremely classy and professional. Nothing ametuerish or kiddy. you WANT the symbol to be known and build up on itself.

generic mountins or some guy on a horse won't do that.
