The female protagonist voice is much better.

After two play troughs on the main quest line, one with a male character and another with a female character, i think the female voice acting is much better. It adds so much more emotion and adds so many nuances to little things and reactions. Not that Brian Delaney's acting is bad, it's good (Not as good as let's say, Doug Cockle) but dayum Courtnay Taylor did an epic, amazing job, i am loving to play my female character.

Yeah, but to be fair, Courtnay Taylor has a lot more experience than Brian Delaney. Both have done a good job. I'm currently on my second playthrough, playing as a male character this time. (I played a female character for my first.) I noticed right away from the first conversation with Codsworth that the readings of the lines were quite different. Delaney was a lot more explosively angry when you pick "They Stole Him", versus Taylor's shimmering mix of anger mixed with a half-choked sob.

Yeah, that's all over the game, when you tell Preston that you have your own problems, Taylor gives this subtle declining but still friendly tone, while Delaney tone is more direct and almost like pushing him away if that makes any sense.

Anyways, i understand that both actors had their own takes on the lines, and each one have different approach to situations. I know that they would hate to read people comparing the two protagonist's voice acting, but hey, it's inevitable.

I decided to play a female the first run, as I wanted to see how the 'she-wolf looking for her cub' angle played out, I think she did an outstanding job.

Oh I adore Courtenay's reads.

I was really confused when I heard people saying the player character lacked emotion and input on the dialog interaction. But then I remembered, I haven't played the male yet, and most people probably picked him first.

In a perfect game, both of the voices would have equally good reads, and both be extremely compelling to play. But, it's kind of nice to see the non-iconic gender have the better VO.

Of course it is, Courtenay Taylor is one of the best at what she does as a voice actor. Her role as Jack in Mass Effect was killer.

Even still though, I find Delaney does a well enough job. There are some times in dialogue that I find his take on a response rather off in tone that is unfitting, and sometimes just odd. Sometimes when he displays anger in his voice it just sounds forced. Still, it's like Mark Meer with Male Shepard from Mass Effect. Not the best, but tolerable.

She brings that Bioware feel to the game. I usually never play female PCs but I'm glad I did this time.

Agreed. However being a James Bond like character in rpgs I can't go female haha. It's great cause Bond is one of the recorded names too. So codsworth is always like "hello mr. Bond" and I laugh everytime.

While I do agree with this. I think that that male protagonist fits the story better. I mean, they were a soldier, so it is easier to explain joining the Minutemen and the Brotherhood (or at least simply helping them out) and picking certain perks. Honestly, I keep thinking about building a character that does no/very little crafting.

Eh, I beg to differ at least for the brotherhood.

Your spouse was in the military, he may have worn Power Armor in front of you at some point, or maybe you had to help him into it. Even if you were a lawyer as the female protag, your still a military family. So I imagine the brotherhood being one of the closest things resembling Pre-War military, you could find affinity with them easily. They would either remind you of the military, if your male. Or remind you of your husband, if you picked female.

Preserving some of what you lost after Nates death is a good reason for female Protags to be interested in the brotherhood of steel, lmao.

yeah, i went for the "mama bear" approach for my female character too, and WOW the dialogue with Kellog was AMAZING, it really was.

BoS is also partially about Law and order to the wasteland, which is something that someone practicing law might like, especially in a place that is essentially, mostly lawless.

we deduced in a previous thread that everyone was drafted at some point, so thats where she learned to wear power armour and shoot stuff. Also where she met Mr Handsome. It's the only head-canon that makes sense.

It's amusing that some people think that someone with a law degree can't also have a military background.

I love Courtenay Taylor's voice acting, but I feel like there isn't really any large disparity in talent between the two. I was very pleased with Brian Delaney's work, too, and he does a great job of being an "everyman" sort of voice without becoming a generic space marine. And I'm very happy they read the lines differently.

Then why does everything relating to the military get mentioned with the HUSBAND, not the wife?

I'm heavily considering making my next character female.

For those arguing about the background, it's implied that she hasn't used her law degree in a while, which most likely means she also has a military background - which may very well be how the both of them met, considering the age of Shawn.

again why isn't her military background even mentioned? Maybe it was clerical/desk work and she never actually fought at all. Also, 'not used in a while' could mean anything. They say Shaun is less than a year old, so that to me does nothing to indicate anything.

Courtenay did a great job and actually used her voice instead of an accented or altered sounding voice.

Yeah she's amazing. Whether it's making Deadpoolisms or struggling with a lump in her throat while recounting her husbands death it always feels spot on. Always figured the players that complained that the responses lacked emotion were playing male characters.

You know, this thread it like the many with the first Mass Effect. Jennifer Hale brought more a believable experience to the role of Commander Shepard than Mark Meer.
