On the fence about Honest hearts

Post » Mon Oct 04, 2010 7:06 pm

Hello there i have been looking around and getting alot of mixed opinions on Honest hearts and want to know if there is a review detailing the ups and downs without any major spoilers. i have looked around the forums but only finding its "Such and such" but nothing really helpful. So if anyone can tell me if i should expect a Point lookout or at least a good 4-6 hours story with plenty of Free roam goodness.

I can't or won't tell you to get it or avoid it like the plague, because everyone is different, with differing game styles and what they want from their game. I can tell you that I am almost 6 hours into Honest Hearts and have barely touched the Main Quest. of course some people would like to rush through it and not do any exploring, then complain that it wasn't long enough.

Honest hearts was meant to be explored. If you take your time and explore, enjoy the sights you will enjoy it. it is a good DLC with plenty to see and do.

Reviews are all subjective, so you're bound to be faced with a bit of bias. I played for about 5/6 hours, and I know that I didn't find all of the locations (I just meandered through it as opposed to blasting through or aiming to find everything there), but I didn't use fast travel, so that might up the time. There's plenty to explore away from the MQ, but I'd say that maybe not as much as PL, although I haven't played that in a while. It's definitely got a more PL "feel" than DM did, I think.

You can breeze through the quests in no time at all. A player who just wants to play the main story will probably be disappointed.
Some players feel the choices are limited (there is no dedicated Eddie's Legion path, although the reasoning for this is quite sound); there are only two main options.

In comparison to Point Lookout, you will find a significant drop in content quantity. I'm guessing it's about half of PL.

If you enjoy exploration and finding things the game is rewarding; the best character in the game (IMO) is never met by the player. It's DLC sized, so you won't spend days there, but it's got lots of interesting content.

The environment is great; the Mojave looks dreary when you return.

It's the usual mixed bag of loot, perks & recipes. Some will fit your style, some won't.

None of the enemies are all that challenging, but they are fun to fight. Giant Cazadores. Yogi Bears.

Bottom Line: Lots to love here if you take it slow (IMPORTANT! Be very careful who you shoot at the beginning!); try to finish your exploring before you undertake the final objective (there's a pop-up warning you) & you should get an easy 4 to 8 hours out of it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the answers because i had this issue with Dead money and now i am hearing some similar things but mostly with people complaining about it being short. Are the areas that you explored are the areas unique or just a building with no back story.

Some are empty, but there is a series of caves that contains the most detailed back story sequence in New Vegas. Do yourself a favor: if you think it is likely that you will buy the DLC, do not read anything online about a character called the Survivalist (or Clark). Let it be a surprise. It's that good.

Reviews, no matter how professional was, they are still subjective, and sadly, some of them are bias, you just need to read them just as a tip or an advice, but not like a final judgment of the DLC, because you may lost a good thing or two in it

If they fix a few of the stall outs and glitches, I would say its pretty good for a small dlc.

My experience:

It did feel a little short. I took my time, and when all was said and done I felt it was swift (didn't time myself though).

That being said, I absolutely enjoyed it and was very happy with my purchase (10 dollars, come on. That's a movie ticket). After this DLC, I only use the armor I got from my travels there. The MQ ending was very cool as well.

I would recommend it.

Uh. What? It doesn't? Did you end up killing Follows-Chalk and, you know, missing 90% of the content?

If found it a bit underwhelming. I was hoping for a few more side quests and a few more NPC's that you could interact with (minus the caravan I think there was only 5!)

I kind of agree, I was hopeing for more side quests too and longer side quests, the ones that are avaliable are a bit short. I didn't really have a problem with the amount of NPC's I could interact with, I honestly thought that was OK for the story they were telling.

Something that was dissapointing for me was the Snowglobe location. In Dead Money it took me AGES to find that damn Snowglobe. In Honest Hearts it was exactly where I expected it to be (in one of the very few prewar buildings). I love combing the wastes looking for everything thats useful and keeping an eye out for the Snowglobes in an added challenge, they weren't too hard to find the the main part of New Vegas but it took me a while to find the one in Dead Money, I thought they might continue making Snowglobes hard to find in DLC's.
