The first letter in every main Elder Scrolls game spell...

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 3:57 pm

It could just be a coincidence but I found a very TES sounding name using the first letter in each main TES game from Arena to Skyrim. Could this mean something in the future or does it seem like a coincidence? I haven't played any of them until Skyrim and this just popped up in my head. I also guess someone else thought of this too but I have no idea.

Arena
Daggerfall
Morrowind
Oblivion
Skyrim

ADMOS

Still keep in mind that there will be (of course) more TES games in the future whether they will be the name of a Province or Deity within the lore. What do you think is the missing (or one of the missing) letters for this?

"Admos"? What is "admos" in the lore? I think you are looking for a pattern where none exists.

I know but it could just pop up somewhere in the future. It's just a coincidence that it sounds close to a name.

Not that it's any big surprise, but I typed "Admos" into the search engine at UESP and didn't find anything.

Definitely a coincidence. Morrowind was called Tribunal at one point, and I'm pretty sure that they don't actually know what games they're going to make years before they make them.

Hey, I just noticed something else... the LAST letter in each game spell something...

Arena
Daggerfall
Morrowind
Oblivion
Skyrim

ALNM

Turn the N upside down, it makes a U, and we add the I, so it spells ALDUIN! Hey everyone, ALDUIN is the next major boss!

IIRC, Morrowind and Oblivion was leaked as the working titles for TES 3 and 4 not long after the release of Daggerfall, i.e. MANY years ahead of time.

This is 100% incorrect. As Lady Nerevar said, ORIGINALLY TES III was going to be called Tribunal, and actually set in Summerset Isle. This was the way it was up until 1998-9 or so, when the setting was changed to Morrowind, but the name kept; it wasn't until late 1999/2000 or so when the game's name was changed and finalized to Morrowind.

Similarly, the first time the public knew the name of Oblivion was in September 2004.

I can still remember that intriguing daily 'countdown' they did on the front page. I was expecting Bethesda to so something similar for Skyrim, but I guess they figured the release date was cool enough, they didn't need to overdo the coolness factor with a one-letter-at-a-time reveal of the name. ;)

Oops, I went off topic there. And such an important topic, too...

I might be reaching here, my friend, since so many years have passed... But take a look at this text released by Bethesda for the 10th anniversary of TES (http://tamrielchronicles.com/html/the_elder_scrolls.html).

It is correct that Morrowind was originally going to be called Tribunal and set in Sumurset Isle, just as Daggerfall was originally supposed to be called Mournhold and set in Morrowind... However, extrapolating from the text you can see that the setting and title for TES 3 was changed to Morrowind less than a year after the completion of Daggerfall...

I remember vivid discussions about this on the message boards of TES: The Essential Site (don't know if there are any other old geezers remembering this site, used to be the one-stop-shop for Daggerfall fanatics back in the day. A not-fully-functional relic can be found at The Imperial Library - http://www.imperial-library.info/~crodo/main.html). However the boards do not seem to be working anymore and I am sure that topics from the nineties must have been wiped years ago anyway...

Someone who knew a developer at Bethesda (or indeed an anon dev himself) was posting info about what ideas were in store for future games in the series, such as what features would be in, but not, however, where the games would be set. I remember it being stated that in TES 4 (not 3) the player would be able to actually visit Oblivion, and in conjunction with this a working title (note: not a finalized name) of "Oblivion" was suggested.

Again, I might be reaching terribly here, but I suppose nothing short of a dev statement would lend clarification to the matter. I do however remember that in 2004 I was not surprised at all about the announcement of Oblivion. So, if I have my facts wrong, I must have dreamt the title up :)

Not out to cause flame wars here, just reminiscing about old times :)

You're misspelling that. The proper spelling is "Wabbajack".

A dagger battles the red morrows when the tribes' bloody storm dawns over the shadows of oblivion, across the nine shivering skies.

Of course.

On a side note, wasn't "Skyrim" as a name registered some time before last year's announcement? Some people pointed that out and wondered.
Or so i barely recall correctly
