I disagree. Skyrim came out in November and still managed to get GOTY 2011, and that was a very challenging year too.
There are Games of the Year for me, The Witcher 3 was the game I didn't care about, skipped every bit of news about it, mutes the volume when it appeared during the E3 and I bought it just because I was waiting for the expansion of another game and wanted to play sometimes else in the meantime. I ended up forgetting about the expansion of the other game and played The Witcher 3 a lot, I loved it, my first playthrough was about 120 hours. It's not a pefect game, and I don't think there's a perfect game out there, every game that I've enjoyed always has that "It would be great if this game had x or y thing". The Witcher 3, Bloodborne and Fallout 4 are my games of the year, each for different reasons.
One thing that I liked a lot by CD Projekt Red is how they added things that people requested as free DLC, such as New Game+ (Even though it's only one extra playthrough) and other things were added via patches, like Storage chests or improvements to the weight of the items. Many of these things are added by paid DLC or not added at all.
Why are people getting defensive about this. This could only be a good thing. I like Fallout 4. A lot. But it has a crapton of problems, and is less RPG-y than any BGS game before it. Maybe a game that actually tried to be an RPG winning GOTY will make Bethesda think on things.
Precisely. There were several hundred threads of Fallout 4 suggestions that discussed this very thing. Bethesda doesn't look at their forums though for the most part. Hell in development they used Skyrim and other games as a model instead of New Vegas or even Fallout 3 for that matter.
We do not actually know that. Just because they don't post doesn't mean they don't read. So we are just guessing at this point.
Still my game of the year The best RPG I have played - because all the funny characters and interesting factions/locations.
I like the game more than Witcher 3, because it is more variable. If I could play for different kind of witchers, I would have problem to decide.
So I guess Witcher 3 had better engine and superb story. They really deserved that, but Fallout 4 would get 2nd place.
If I look at Steam, how horrible games there are usually, I'm really glad for Bethesda.
Because otherwise if you want an open world, there are only MMOs and very limited games. They are the only one who makes such incredible variable games.
And the players who criticize Bethesda so much should realise, that it also can happen, that it will turn the company to worse as it happened in other companies. And I really want them to continue with their franchises...
Meh.... these game awards mean practically nothing. Almost every big game that comes out wins an award from somebody.. Tons and tons of awards by tons and tons of different organizations.
I mean.. look at this massive list of who gives out "game of the year" awards. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Game_of_the_Year_awards
Didn't they say the DLC will be based on fans' feedback?
True, but as far as I know no one had seen one in the 200+ suggestion threads. I certainly haven't seen one aside from after E3 and the game was finalized, and despite my post count I've been on.. a lot. It was something people commented on a lot: Obsidian interacted with the community with New Vegas, but no one had seen a Bethesda employee for Fallout 4.
Again it's just guessing based on what I have seen and heard though.
Yes, and we can see the fan feedback in features like weapon mods and the settlement building in game. It was mods for Fallout 3, and now they included it in their game and polished it alot. Sort of the best fan feedback you can get, creations in your own engine.
Well, I have no issue with that. The Witcher 3 absolutely deserved the awards. Good storytelling, writing, immersive branching storyline and choices and consequences. For a game that gives you a fixed protagonist, this is very impressive.
Still, doesn't mean it's all bad for Bethesda. Could be a learning experience as well. Fallout 4 was definitely not the gift from god like some "super-devoted" fans here like to claim, and there is a room for improvement for next games. I am looking forward to it .
There are a LOT of types of RPGs. This whole "Traditional RPGs are the only true RPGs!" BS is getting old.
I say this as someone who grew up on traditional RPGs.
Fallout 3 didn't win either as it lost to GTA4 back in 2008. So far only TES games have won VGA for Bethesda.
Also,VGA is just one award show and a massively overrated and celebrity infested one at that.
Are you guys going to start telling us that we have to like Witcher 3 now?
Geez, I played it and it was ok but really not my cuppa. So whatever.
1.) I strongly disagree on literally everything you just said about Witcher 3. It will go down as one of the most bland, boring and Mediocre games that I have ever had the displeasure of playing.
2.) It's funny that you say Fallout 4 fans claim that Fallout 4 is a gift from God when Witcher 3 fan boys do that far more often to the point where it has become extremely obnoxious.
Edit: Double post. I've been having some serious connectivity issues with these forums lately.
I would go so far as to say that a few FPS games are actually RPG's aswell. Like Half Life and Half Life 2, Bioshock, Far Cry 3. Guess i will be crucified for this.
If The Witcher 3 is mediocre, then I guess the video game industry is done for good.
I mean, I could see what you're saying with Bioshock and FC3, but... Half Life?
It's amazing and all, but it is literally the godfather of modern on-rails shooters.
1.) You can disagree all you want if it makes you feel better.
2.) I do. I meet them everywhere on the internet, from Facebook to Youtube. Every single criticism of the sacred Fallout 4 and "Godd Howard" is met either with ridicule or insults or the usual tired assumption that the person criticizing it must be "hating the post Fallout 2 games" (which is laughable). If anything, Bethesda has the most insufferable sycopanthic fan boys, closely followed by Bioware.
