The Five Weapon Backpack Rule

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:59 am

I liked the Halo1 & Mirror's Edge treatment of firearms. Traditionally Fallout let you carry a lot of weapons, and that worked fine for a turn based game, but FO3 is Worm's Eye style shooter now, with an intent for visual realism. So I think a 5 weapon (or less) equipment cap would make it a lot more realistic. :goodjob:

I don't think it should be capped, it should be up to the player to make the choice. FO:NV's hardcoe mode, however... ammo with weight essentially limits the amount of weapons you carry, cause you will only carry what you're willing to haul along ammo for :)

Possibly not. The hunting rifle is actually a standby for many seasoned players, the double barrel shotgun comers from one of the DLC's, combat knife is a decent backup and he may be doing a little roleplaying, and the chinese assault rifle is the best assault rifle besides it's unique equivalent, and the . 32 cal pistol is probably so he can share ammo with the hunting rifle.

actually i use the hunting rife as my primary weapon and the chinese assault rife is for backup, if i get attacked by multiple enemies. Combat knife for ghouls (carry a limited amount of ammo and don't waste it on them). for harder ghouls i use my double-barrel shotgun, or for sneak attacks, both barrels in the head. 32 is a backup, hardly ever use it though. and I carry no more than four grenades.

I carry:

- One main weapon, usually automatic and two-handed. Less than 300 ammo.
- One sidearm, usually the .44 revolver. Less than 50 ammo.
- One (small) melee weapon, usually a combat knife.
- A grenade or two

+ A few day's supply of food and water.
+ Cigarettes and a set of drugs
+ An extra set of clothes (I rarely use any actual armor).

Along with any extra junk I just looted or I have a reason to carry with me.

That is what I figured. By standby I didn't mean backup, but the gun they often stick with. Decent range, damage, and there are plenty of repair guns and a lot of ammo available as loot. May not be the strongest, but it is easy to maintain and keep loaded.

Wow, after reading all these replies I'm beginning to think that even carrying five weapons is too much. I thought that five weapons would actually be quite restrictive, but after reading that most of you go into battle with just one or two weapons and a few grenades, I'm definitely going to limit my weapons from now on :)

ah i see, thought you ment backup, it is i think the best weapon on the game, reminds me of the type of gun used in a boy and his dog. and that is the only reason i can see the hunting rife being in the game, a homage to that film as in a future with lasers and plasma i think hunting rifles would have been decommissioned a long time ago, maybe people had a few for hunting but not that many in the capital wastelands. but back on topic it is a good weapon to have for the reasons you stated, + it makes the wastelands that more dangerous and exciting using a gun like that. have to pick battles carefully rather than going in all guns blazing switching weapons every to seconds.

The real limiting factor is not the number of weapons you have going into battle, it's the number you have after the fact. If you can only carry five guns, you're probably leaving hundreds of caps worth of hardware (potential stimpacks, ammo, or hired followers) lying with the corpses of your enemies.

If I could only have 5 weapons...Backpack, 2 Long Guns, 2 Belt weapons:
Vengeance
Xuanlong or Destabaliser
Victory or Gauss
Blackhawk or Alien Blaster
Ultra smg or Novasurge

My picks vary for small guns vs energy weapons. But clearly Vengence is a must.
If vengence can't kill it... it can't be killed

I typically do not carry more than 4 weapons for actual use, not counting grenades or mines, nor more than one weapon from any non-explosives category. For example:

Vengeance
Gauss Rifle
Blackhawk
5 Nuka-Grenades
5 Bottlecap Mines (I don't always carry these)

I tend not to carry any Melee or Unarmed equipment since I am not a fan of those combat styles, however I do occasionally have a Power Fist or Super Sledge on hand for when I just have to bash something a good one.

I don't know about you, but I think that the sheer amount of weapons that its possible to carry in this game just makes things too easy. Seriously, I'm carrying enough firepower right now to equip a small army. Its way more than any one person should be able to carry by themselves. So, to add to the realism, and to provide more of a challenge, I propose the following - The Five Weapon Backpack Rule

No big deal its just a game... after all there are not to many people that I know that can run around all day packing 250 pounds... do you know any?

A few males, maybe. Very few. I don't think any woman could do it, no six discrimination intended: traveling great distances with 250 pounds is at the very upper performance limit for males.

All Day??? In the game my character caries that and it does not slow him down a bit... he runs, jumps, shoots and walks while squatting as though he is naked and not carrying a single pound.

Isn't one man in the world that can do that!

This topic is pretty interesting because I usually like to carry a long distance "sniper" type gun, an assault rifle and a shotgun, having realistic restrictions can make the game play a bit more challenging and fun.

Anyway, here are my choices:

  • Backpack Weapon - Usually none so I have more loot capacity, but if I need extra firepower I'd go with Eugene, Vengance or Precision Gatling
  • Commando One - Lincoln's Repeater
  • Commando Two - Metal Blaster or Terrible Shotgun
  • Holster One - Dart Gun
  • Holster Two - Col Autumn's 10mm or Alien Disintegrator
  • Melee - Samurai's Sword

Interesting it is called the hunting rifle... 32 caliber pistol ammo does not make for a good "hunting" rifle....
why not chamber it in .308 or in New Vegas maybe they should introduce dangerous game rifles -
like a double barreled .500 nitro....

I just restarted Fallout 3 using a very similar self-imposed rule set (on Xbox, so no mods), and I'm actually finding it a ton of fun. My specific rules:

1. Can only carry 5 weapons (one for each of the lower D-pad hotkeys, with the upper hotkeys all assigned to drugs/stimpacks).
2. Only one of those weapons can be two-handed, and only 5 grenades or mines of any kind can be carried at once.
3. Must be wearing the heaviest clothing/armor in my inventory, and can only carry as much clothing as I can imagine wearing layered.
4. Can only carry 1-2 bottles of liquid at a time.

Currently I'm carrying around a Gauss Rifle, a laser pistol, and a sawed-off shotgun, with A3-21's Plasma Rifle stashed in my hotel room in Rivet City. My Repair skill is really low, so I have a tendency to just ditch weapons when they run out of ammo or get really low in quality. Mostly I walk around in a RobCo jumpsuit (so I can layer Power Armor over it if I happen to find any, and then wear it back to one of my stashes in the Wasteland to drop it off as needed).

I've got some other self-imposed restrictions unrelated to inventory management as well (playing on Hard, no Fast Travel, sleeping every day, eating to replenish health if any food is on hand, only saving on autosave, keeping INT down at 1 to make point allocation more lean, etc.). I've played this game a whole lot, and more than any other self-imposed variations I've ever tried, this set really brings out the sense that the Wasteland is a dangerous place, where scavenging and thieving feel necessary just to get by, and you're just as likely to suffer from radiation sickness as from gunshot wounds. Wish the console versions of the game allowed you to toggle more options like mods. Looking forward to hardcoe Mode in New Vegas!

You may want to think twice about the Int 1 thing in NV. If the NV devs make it more like the originals, your dialog options will go straight into the toilet. 'Me see moo-moo!'

5 is way to many I usually play with only 3 weapons in my backpack, long-range, mid-range, and short-range, usually a sniper rifle, assault rifle, and pistol, and only carry about 500 rounds (or less) for each, I did this before I heard that New Vegas was coming out, but now I do it to prepare for hardcoe mode.

My Standard Trip Carry (STC) is as follows:

Backpack: Victory Rifle (100 rounds)
Commando 1: Xaunlong Assault Rifle (250-400 rounds depending on distance/location)
Commando 2: Ol' Painless Hunting Rifle (200 rounds, and my personal favorite weapon in Fallout 3)
Holster 1: 4 Grenades
Holster 2: 25 stimpaks, 2 Stealth Boys
Armor: Ranger Combat Armor and Helmet
Misc: Current quest items, room for picked up loot

Thanks for the tip. :)

I'll probably just play NV on Normal my first time through, and only fiddle with hardcoe mode and bizarre self-imposed restrictions as a way to justify far too many replays...

I never carry alot of weapons unless its a brand new character. I end up carrying one main weapon which is usually a two handed weapon, a back up weapon usually a one hander, and either a melee or unarmed weapon. None of my characters have the same weapons they all use something different depending on the character's RP. This aslo includes clothing/armor.

I only allow myself to carry

A Melee weapon: Combat Knife
Secondary weapon: Blackhawk/.44magnum
Primary weapon: Chinese assualt rifle
Grenades: generally plasma

This means no picking up weapons as loot for me

I allow myself to pick up weapons that can be used to repair the weapons I am using. In my head I pretend I stripped the gun and only took spare parts to fix mine. It keeps it real. :vaultboy:
