The Flying Dutchman

Post » Mon Oct 26, 2009 11:52 pm

Which unfortunately is:

Start over.

You see, in a moment of weakness I took an hour off to watch some tv down stair and forgot to lock my computer....

this afternoon I was cleaning up my system, getting rid of old files, arranging stuff, and my -almost- four year old son was sitting on my lap watch daddy do his thing (real father/son time)

While I was down stair, my son -unsupervised- got out of bed (he looked like he was asleep..)

went into my room and climbed into daddy chair (behind the computer that wasn't locked, everything open, administrator rights..)

after being given a crash course in "delete" all afternoon (does anyone feel what coming next? Cuz I sure as hell never saw it coming...)

And proceeded to continue pruning daddies directory tree so that daddy didn't have to...

I've been reinstalling stuff for the last two hours
download directory, empty
lost my music, all of it.
most of my vids
games directory, gone.
and all assosiated files in the games directory
every add on I downloaded in the last 6 months, gone

the Flying Dutchman and all files, gone.

edit: Paint gone
all my extures I'ld found in the last 6 months, gone
all the tutorials, all arranged into nice chapters, gone (I was going to give that to the community as a 4th of july present),
.
..
I'm actually numb from shock.

I'm back to paper.
wow.

This hadn't hit me as hard until I started typing and now I'm a mess.......

Wow that svcks, allways keep a backup with kids in the house :P
I suggest locking your son in a cage to prevent further mishaps.

Wow... I'm sorry, Andy. I guess the only thing left to do now is start over (and put a password on your computer!). Look on the bright side though, a fresh start might allow you to re-do certain things that would have been too much trouble than before. My condolences though, wow...

Thanks guys :)

Yeah, fresh start.

And I alway lock it too...
force of habit.

And then the one time you don't..

Boom. A 4yr old cyber terrorist sneaks into your room and deletes youe entire existence.

Thankfully he couldn't get at the program files (Never thought I would ever utter these words, but for once I thank MS deeply..)
Which is why he only got my games and Paint, I had -past tense, sigh- them all bundled in a development folder.

So, phaes II; "the re-launch"
Are there any suggestions for the Flying Dutchman, as it has unexpectedly been pushed back into the design stage? And please don't say "smaller" or it'll be a rowboat. And if you want bigger: wait for The Minnow

I'm obviously open to suggestions

Acolyte was on vacation in Boco Royal and has witnesses that he was attending a bingo evening at the time of the disaster. His alibi is covered..

I went through something similar (though not as completely fracked). Not much for conciliation, but I can tell you it does go ALOT faster the second time (and maybe a bit smoother, too). Stay strong man!

Always keep backups, I have a friend working on a town for Oblivion and she has hundreds of backups, every stage of creation all backed up on an external hard drive.

Not a good place to keep all of your backups, put them on a disk or something.

I knoooowwww.

I've  myself soooo many times I look like the red dot on a metro sign "you are here"

So, enough self pity (although everyone else can still keep it up for awhile) This out to everyone who was tracking the progress -other than re-setting your clocks to zero :\ Anything ship/nautical-wise anyone want to see?
It's still a prety large ship, so aslong as noone say "football field", I can work stuff in..
And if it involves scripting, stick around, I probably need your help implementing it :D

Wow, thats the worst!

Really sorry Andy. Have you tried a Recovery program? It`s a long shot, but you may salvage something, smaller files have a fairly good chance of recovery.

Sympathies,

I can try, but I went into the dos prompt thinking "he can empty the trashcan but the directory structure should still be there.." -it's saved my bacon before

to no avail. I'm thinking because the machine was on the opening login window, he pushed a cold re-boot a few times (my tower has that button on the front)

I'm using the my old beast atm and not touching the other one..
But I think I'm going to have to fall back* and re-group at the drawing table.

*Marines call this maneuver "advancement to the rear", pfff and they call Acolyte a bonehead? Suure...

Shouldn't they just be in the recycle bin or something?

Or, failing that, I've had times when I've lost everything on my hard drive and computer repair guys have managed to retrieve the files. I have no idea how they do that, but it might be something worth looking into.

That's what kids do. They pretend to be asleep and wait for you to let your guard down. And then they think, "now's our chance to be bad!" and then they go to town.

NPCs

CJ
The mysterious owner of the ships' primere casino/nightclub, located halfway up the Twins towers. Nothing is known about the venerial CJ, except that he was wealthy enough to pay for the building of the casino, lives somewhere on the ship, and does any wetwork -kills, against any parties who threaten the casino or any of it's employees/business ventures.
Sinse no one has ever lived to see his/her face (people on board asume CJ is a he), he hides in plain sight. He is a master ninja assassin, and is rumored that he wears a vedora hat and trenchcoat when on a mission...
He is wanted by the Ships pinkerton services as well as the Marshals for questioning and there is a reward out of "10yrs upper middleclass lifestyle" for any information that leads to his capture.

FoxtrotZulu
One of the ships anti-insurgency teams, and probably the best. Charged with taking the fight to the enemy, they are always done on the barge decks, fighting off sea raiders during an attack. Because of this the entire team are exellently skilled in MOUT/CQB and are appropriately equipped. The team consists of:

team leader Walter;
an old, mean, grumpy guy who can kick wazoo and has been married to his wife for 47 yrs. He claims it's due to his marrige that enables him to fight so dirty, he's projecting. Swears alot.
Peanut,
v.e.r.y hyper, fast as hell, not something you want to see aggitated and armed with SMG and grenades. Likes to make fun of Jose
Jose, the cuban
A real skinny guy with a sombrero who likes to "ceranade the senioritas" and doesn't get along well with Peanut. Likes knives and his favorite sawed off shotgun
Sweet Daddy Dee,
the ladies man of the outfit, but can seriously rock and roll using nothing but a .44 blackhawk "cuz its All ah need. That an' sum hoochie mama"
Bubba Jay,
not the brightest flame in a forest fire, but lethal with a napalm projector
Achmed,
the explosives guy
Some guy called "Jeff", their Quartermaster. Don't mention the "lotion"...

I have more of these in mind :hubbahubba: edited for spelling, probably more than once

BigCrazeWulf
As you might guess, he's big, slightly insane and part German, part Native American. He is also the manager of CJ and bouncer when the oppertunity allows for it.
-as in, the oppertunity allows for it because no one was fast enough to stop him in time before he tossed someone out the window. Thanks to the continued protection from the mysterious CJ, no one trys stopping him anyway.
He carries a combat knife and machete on his side because he doesn't need any fire arms, as he says, but is non the less proficiant with most. Lives above the casino.
Born in the aft area of the ship known as Jersey, he still has may good contacts within "the old neighborhood". How CJ and BigCrazeWulf became friends isn't known, although rumors that one saved the other during a fight persistently float around. All anyone knows is that one day BigCrazeWlf deposited so many gold bars in the ships coffers that they had to reinforce the floor below it, and hebought the rights to CJs then and there. Awhile later when BigCrazeWulf was having some problems with the Dutch/Rasta mob, all of a sudden they started turning up dead. The rumor was born.

Yevic
Old east european wastelander who came on board about 15 yrs ago and resides in lower Man Hatten. Although he seems to live in humble style from the outside, inside he has transformed it into a true sanctuary of luxury. As a repair guy his skills are some of the best -and most expensive- onboard, but certainly the guy to see for quality repair and tech items (he has a massive collection of old tech)
Wears big horned rim glasses, and dont ask about the daniel boone cap, he knows how to use the AK above the fireplace...
