Brink of the Founders

My name is Founder Charles. I am the last remaining founding creator of the Ark that’s still alive that hasn’t passed away or been killed. The refugees keep pouring into my floating city. Food and water consumption has sky-rocketed beyond our production capabilities. It’s gotten so bad now that the only ones getting more than a fair-share are Security, and that only entitles an extra ration of water. I’ve even taken it on myself to limit my eating to breakfast only, and a single bottle of water per day. Despite this fact, refugees continue to arrive in hordes. They don’t even bother to ask anymore, they simply step onto our docks and start setting up their shanties, and then scream at us for not giving them anything to eat or drink. Hell, forget the resources, at this rate their sheer weight is going to make the whole damn place sink into the ocean.

Criminal activity continues to rise, and my Security forces are growing more stringent and desperate by the day. I’ve instituted a crackdown, but the Resistance is ever persistent. Its adolescent ways have already proven the ferocity that it imposes and the agro of this threat to my city only strengthens my own will to suppress them. How easily it would be to have my forces open fire on the whole refugee sector, but that would be far too inhumane. Besides, the retaliation from the refugees would result in an all-out civil war. A war I fear we would lose very quickly simply from the overwhelming size of the refugees on the Ark, but still- our resources continue to be siphoned away by those locusts. War is going to happen sooner or later, and I’d much rather it happen sooner while we’re still in control of what remains in the cities near-empty vaults.

We also still have the strategic upper-hand. The Resistance is young, underdeveloped, their leaders are still devising tactics and acquiring weapons and supplies for the so-called “Cause”. Though at the same time my Security is inexperienced, their training is surely superior to that of even the most elite Resistance soldiers. That lack of experience still worries me deeply. One false move, one strategic-crippling lose, and their morale might go down harder than the dead bodies of their fallen comrades. Then everything we’ve worked for will be lost in the blink of an eye.

It’s obvious now that I won’t be able to make the first move, but I can still prepare. The refugees think our supplies are limitless. All hell will break loose as they begin to realize the terrible truth, and no ones gonna give a second thought about humanity then. Sadly, it might already be too late. I’ve had to sacrifice almost a 1/3 of the city just to house the mongrels, and still they demand more.

Everyday, I’m sitting here in my office, looking down on the entirety of the Ark. It’s so beautiful, so majestic. The 8th wonder of the modern world they called it; completely self-sufficient and self-dependant. We could’ve maintained life on this station indefinitely. Advance our knowledge of science and art, and evolve our own culture beyond that of our dry-land ancestors. My brothers and sisters truly had a grand vision of humanity and beauty when the designed this floating kingdom.

I suppose it was destiny, or fate that I would be the last founder alive. Though I didn’t play a magnificent role in the Arks construction as its Chief of Security, all the best of my wisdom and fortitude will be desperately needed in the coming months for the Arks safety, and ultimately- its survival. It’s time for the final founder to prove that this city truly is worth the title of being the 8th wonder. Being self-sufficient doesn’t just mean feeding its people and giving them shelter. You have to be capable of protecting them from both internal discord and outside threats.

With that in mind after a great deal of thought, I’ve begun the early designs of a conscription program. The more able-bodies that I can have trained and battle-ready the more secure our future will be. When- and if, my Security forces should fall, I don’t want the people we’re protecting not have a clue as to how to protect themselves. It’s a short, but rough training regiment of dieting, exercise, gun use, and field tactics. Obviously I have no intention of putting citizens on the frontlines, but at least I know the people won’t burst into out-right panic if a Resistance cell manages to break through the checkpoints and blockades and raid an isolated section of our city.

I have to keep in mind that not all refugees are a part of the Resistance, but nothing is going to stop them from joining when their life is inevitably going to end from starvation or crime in a few months anyway. As more and more people come to the Ark, life for the ones that were already here is only going to get worse, and that means more disgruntled rebel activity.

I believe the opinions of the native population share mutual interests with me. However, the approach we take to solving our dilemma varies wide and far amongst each of my officers and congressmen. Some want to evict the refugees and let them fend for themselves out in the ocean. Others want to try diplomacy and arrange a mutual agreement. Our scientists have been desperately struggling on 20-hour shifts to find new methods of producing enough food and water for everyone. While other extremists are considering an out-right holocaust and the systematic extermination of the shanties. We haven’t crossed that line-of-no-return yet, but we’re certainly fast approaching the Brink of total civil war.

Luckily, the number of Security volunteers has been steadily increasing at the same rate of increased crime and unrest within the city. Whether it’s for the desire of order and stability or simply the extra ration of water doesn’t matter. The extra man-power has made it significantly easier to maintain our dominance over the Resistance.

Despite their overwhelming numbers, I’m convinced that it will be the indigenous people of the Ark that will rise above these hard times. To press forward with the gumption and the resolve needed to continue living. To re-attain our lost prosperity as a great community that garnered the attention of the entire world for the future of all humanity.

We called this city the Ark, and we will never let it sink!

My non-canon story of the last-remaining founder of the Ark. Plenty of Security propaganda included. Hope my fellow guards enjoyed, and pissed off a few Resistance as well =p
