The Futility of Skyrim News

Post » Tue May 25, 2010 12:43 pm

So these forums are a breeding ground for discussion about Skyrim, and we like to cling to every bit of news we can get. On many occasions, news can prove to be innaccurate (as the Facebook integration news showed). Translations can be wrong, and our interpretation of some news can be biased and one-sided.

To the point, I just checked Game Informer and found http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/05/11/report-new-skyrim-details-surface.aspx at the top of the page.

So, a news organization is making news about our interpretation of a translated foreign magazine that itself was translated. Accurate Information->Translated->Retranslated->Interpreted by the community->proven partially false->Re-reported. Could anything have been misconstrued along that line? I just found this pretty funny, and wanted to share.

No insult to Game Informer, which I think is a quality source of video gaming news, but I am a member of these forums and will attest to the fact that nothing on here is worth reporting legitimately :P

The only thing we can do is stop the buck and not comment on it.

Havent you guys realized that this has been going on forever? Look at google news and type "skyrim" and half the articles since january are literally just a list of notes copied DIRECTLY off these forums (they usually give credit to the user here for translating). Anyways, I think they play their part relaying information to the ignorant public who secretly love Skyrim but are too lazy to come here to the forums

Ugh. Maybe I'm just a dinosaur or something but seriously, I can do without children in the game. They're more of a distraction than anything when they are the only survivor of an otherwise unwinnable fight with bad ass creatures where their parents are both dead and you're running away licking your wounds.

Facebook integration for Skyrim is a bad idea IMO, it should be removed from the final build.
The other news like the 3d map is awasome !

I hope all the kids in this game are sent to a far-away boarding school...and are never heard from again.

I'm totally confused... Are they trying to integrate Skyrim with Facebook or not? (hope not) I ask because it says on the gameinformer site that it's "legit".

That's some pretty lazy reporting there.

I guess I'm in the wrong line of work. Apparently all I need to do is read these forums and copy down informtion that other posters post, then write it up in an article and bang - instant journalism.

Pete Hines confirmed no. Which is even more surprising that Game Informer chose to use the forum's interpretation of that very article, of which one part was already proven false. But it seems that Game Informer contacted Bethesda after the fact, and the rest proved to be correct (although about half of those were common knowledge, and a quarter of the rest were assumed regardless)

And why such a hatred of children? They were fine in Fallout. IIRC, children were one of the more demanded features from Morrowind and Oblivion. If they aren't absolutely stupid, things should work fine.

I hated the lock picking game in Oblivion, and I hated the lock picking in FO3 even more.

I hate breaking my lock picks.

Hey thats another idea for a mod. Infinate or unbreakable lock picks.

That's awesome.
It's also pretty awesome that whatever we say here is gonna find its way to a website eventually and become "common knowledge" to people following the game.
Moral of the story is: Don't trust ANYTHING you read/see about Skyrim unless it's an interview with someone at Bethesda. Anything else is questionable at best.
Lesson learned.

I think the children in video games are absolutely stupid, though. They have to be for reasons we're not supposed to discuss. I'd love kids, but if they're not going to be fully integrated into the game world, then leave 'em out. Since most people don't have mod access, I'm hoping they decide to scrap the kids.

It's something I'm a bit worried about to, perhaps you can a kid following you so you can use it as a tank, just redraw and use ranged attack.
Now for total surrealistic mayhem combine it with oblivion relation system who sometimes caused civil war in cities.
On the other hand I had no issues with it in Fallout 3, the kid in the ant quest just run away.

I see games as a form of entertainment. I have nothing against having children because I don't quite care how realistic their implementation is. Feel free to explain all of the reasons why Narnia shouldn't have happened, I still enjoyed the books and movies for what they were worth: entertainment. I wouldn't even want to see children implemented with realism in mind, but I don't want them excluded.
