The future of the FPS.

Post » Fri Nov 19, 2010 8:58 am

That's why it's safe to consider Wolfenstein the "Father of the Modern FPS Era", but not the genre in whole. Battlezone(198) was an FPS game as well, and I often believe many would have been happy if that was all the further it went.

SMART will likely get copied, but a lot of people are going to consider anything that allows them to get over stuff as a copy, which it isn't. It wasn't until graphics reached a certain point that we started getting stuck on things that we really shouldn't have been getting stuck on.

In due time, everything comes back to the used game rack/bin regardless of father, mother, brotha' any other svcka' of any genre era. Some call it a nostalgia bin, I call it a family reunion of sorts.

Now that I think about it, there is going to be 50 or so videos out there with people finding ways to get on glitched out pieces of the map by means of light's maneuverability. Oh well, something for me to watch as I eat breakfast I guess.

Well, assuming they programmed the way they claimed, there may not be as much glitching as you expect. They said that every single object in the game is designed to work with SMART exactly the way you expect it to. And if they couldnt get a certain object to play nice, then they wouldnt include it.

The also mentioned that there are no Invisible walls.

Combine these two concepts, and you (hopefully) have self contained maps where no matter where you manage to get, you're still interacting with objects the way they are supposed to work.

If you have nothing intelligent to say then don't say it.

Wow! Thank you.

I think BF has added all of the above. Not being a PC gamer I cannot confirm BF was the first. Kindly read all of my other posts before responding so rashly. Particularly since you are so new to these forums, which may be much more civil than those you have previously frequented.

I read through the entire discussion and noticed no one really discussed Battlefield, which revolutionized the FPS by including large maps, vehicles, and destructible environments. Well, that is, if another game didn't do them first.

Red Faction did WAY better destruction than Battlefield.

Red Faction: Guerrilla outclassed the previous titles by a wide margin, and Battlefield by even more.

And Vehicles were around before Battlefield in quite a few games. Earliest I can think of was Battlezone. Might have been something before then as well, but I"m not sure.

I think Battlefield was the first to combine both of those two and do things on such a large scale though.

Depends on what you want to call vehicle combat. The original Scorched Earth comes to mind....

is you think the perks and kill streak system is a revolution (yeah maybe to hell), kindly Please continue, my good sir. and gtfo. Im just gonna say when I get a Godlike in the original UT, I earned it. All legit skill kills. Like halo, there are kill streaks, you are notified of how high your kills streak is, it is fun. If with every kill, you become stronger and stronger, harder to take down, chopper and dogs racking up kills for u while u camp and do nothing, that may detract from the glory of the godlike status you have just achieved. Thus, this is why COD fails for me. I can get two excellence pins on one life in BC2, dont need to have a pack of wild dogs with me to do it either ya know. :P

Hopefully the genre will innovate enough where we will have fully destructible environments, huge maps, air/sea/land vehicles, parkour, and incredible firepower. All of these things combined is what I hope the FPS genre shoots for one day. And we shall call it... Battlefield Brink.

BC2 was a lot more innovative then the MWs.

BRINK is evolving several genre elements, and creating a few of it's own, this is what attracted me to the game.

I consider more of a blast of fresh air than a full-blown shooter revolution, but it does have certain facets and features that I sincerely hope are incorporated into future games. The SMART system, for one. The ability to not get stuck on things you can't even see because you're not looking at the floor is a great step forwards.

The emphasis on teamwork and inter-class interaction too is rather refreshing. Sure, plenty of other games have classes, but I haven't seen any other game yet that seems to be built around team-play like Brink is. TF2 comes close, but I think Brink beats it when it comes to depth of teamwork.

Customization is something that has slowly been creeping into the shooter genre. Brink is really only revolutionary in that aspect in that it has shot way ahead of the pack by offering a thousand times more options than everyone else (APB aside). Other franchises are going to take a while to catch up, methinks. But they will eventually. Because even for the people who aren't customization geeks like myself, having that kind of individuality online is something that a lot of people want. Just being nameless faceless soldier #4 is boring. Being "that huge guy with the pink afro and nothing but short-shorts on" is much more entertaining and enjoyable.

Bots too are something I always like to see, and Brink is doing them better than I've ever seen. When you have AI that is "hard to distinguish from human players" you know you're doing something right. Can't wait for that level of enemy intelligence to show up in other games.

no it wouldnt, cod with SMART would be nightmare. i hope SMART stays within Brink

That doesn't make any sense at all.

CoD with more free-running could work fine. In fact, using Marathon Pro in MW2 did turn your avatar into a very fit person for Parkour-ish movement.

I joined the forums 2 months ago,
For 6 weeks I played Black Ops,
But when I played, it didn't turn out to be the game of my dreams,
I have seen the gates of storage,
Beyond which where no waking eye may see,
Behold, in darkness a game sweeps the land

This is the 4th of May, 2011
The year of the Skyrim release date, 11.11.11,
These are the closing days of making suggestions on the forums,
And the final release of the game called Brink...

How do you guys think BRINK will affect the FPS genre. I dont know if it will or not. It depends on how successfull it is. If its as good as it looks and as they say it is, then there is a good chance that it will change all subsequent FPS titles.

I dont think it will topple the COD juggernaut (although i wish it would) but if it is successfull i think it will send Activision and the other large companies into a scramble. I am hoping this is what will happen because i think it will force them to improve their games and not expect us to just buy them because it has the title Call of Duty or Battlefield.

I honestly havnt seen anything from Brink thats any better than CoD or Halo. All they did was put a bit of RPG into it because as far as features go its got even less than the "big" games. Also, one of the reasons Halos is so popular is a lot of people dont want to deal with all the items and customization that CoD has. You can be sure Brink is gona do nothing for those people. Different games are different.

Not that I wouldnt want to see Brink be successful either.

After putting my time behind the "trigger" of 200 or so FPS's (we counted once then lost count... ) Brink is by far the game i have waited for. When i heard people in the game are going to be able to move like people move I was sold. Ever since then its been "I hope Brink absolutely blows people away." This game is what will change the industrys look at the FPS genre no matter win/ fail. However if Brink gets accepted greatly it has the potential to make every shooter in the future concious of what is sitting behind its controller. If i could I'd thank the creators in person and with presents.

I might find out where Splash Damage's head office is and give them an award. A self-made one of course, but who refuses an award? :teehee:

For we are finally saved from the blasphemy that was a table. Say farewell to crouch-jumping!*

I can see how the SMART system is so attractive to many people, but personally I don't see why the rpg element hasn't been mentioned more. Very few FPS's have included classes along with experience and a sort of skill tree of abilities. In fact, the only others that I can think of at the moment that have done something similar is Borderlands and a few of the Battlefield games. Personally I love upgrades, levels, classes, and unique abilities, it's what makes Brink so awesome to me!

The Modern Warfare series had something like that.
