In Daggerfall we had to go to an NPC and pay him to find out what type of enchantment an item held.
'Item identification' as a spell or ability really isnt that uncommon in an RPG.
Personally I would really enjoy such an added layer of complexity and difficulty.
Possibly as a multi-tiered perk in the rogue tree, combined with NPC's you can pay for the service.

Though this is all tangential of course :)

OT but item enchantments aren't always known again so you have to use them to find out  Or at least it was mentioned before, whether it survives to the end product we have to wait and see.

No my dislike is twofold.

I dont like being told what to do in the game. Be that a quest compass or an inventory that keeps reminding me that my silver dagger is inferior to the loot I pick up.

The inventory doesn't keep "reminding you", it simply displays them as best to worst. You can still equip whatever gear you want, even if its the worst you have available. What's the problem?

Secondly I feel it detracts from the 'world' I am in and makes it more of a 'game'.
Why would my hero be constantly reminded that other weapons are better when my character would never use anything but the family heirloom sword, for example? It diminishes roleplaying by setting an 'optimum path'.

What is this "constantly reminded" business? Did it diminish roleplaying for you to see for yourself by viewing weapon stats in previous games?

This new feature is a function of ordering. It is NOT a function of auto-equipping or pop-up messages that won't leave you alone until you use the game's preferred inventory.

You're still free to do that?....

Sure I am, but that's not the point, I don't need to do that because the game does it all for me.
What is up with that? Are we trying to make this generation/the next one dumb on purpose? What makes Bethesda think that people can't think for themselves?
Honestly, it is terribly insulting to anyone with even half a brain.

I think that you'll still see what enchantments are on items. What we don't know are enchanting effects for enchanting ourselves.

*sigh*

What did you have to think in previous games? Which number is higher?

I just don't understand why it makes people mad, it' completly optional. Is this how you think it will play out: *enters inventory* "Oh that weapon is marked as the best. Grrrrr, I wanted to spend the next few second finding that out myself." And for the roleplayers it will probably be something like this: *enters inventory* "Oh, that one is listed as the most powerful, interesting. Now where's the one I wanted? Oh, there it is, now let's just equip that and..." *Leaves inventory*

Yes you don't need to..but you can, and that is evidently what people want. To spend time comparing numbers yeah you can still do that.
and I don't think lack of comparing numbers suddenly makes for a dumb generation of people, or implies that we can't think for ourselves. It merely makes finding a better item in your inventory easier. You aren't suddenly more intelligent because you compared a couple numbers
I have a full brain by the way thanks <_<

This is the essence of it. It's the "convenience factor". How do we always immediately know what's the best weapon without being a master smith or weapons master? I could see it implemented trough a skill, same as the compass could be a skill.

A lot of people here obviously want a convenient and easily played game, which is fine, but don't dump on the people here who find that these things subtract from their experience. OP has a very valid point, so stop spewing vile and give some constructive criticism.

It's an inventory system, this kind of thing has been in games for ages. Why would you want it to be difficult to find items your looking for? Sooner you find what you need, sooner you can get back to playing, using the inventory isn't some kind of meta-game that should challenge you.

Some kind of identification perk could be added easily to all the crafting skills.

What I don't like about this is that there shouldn't be clear "better" options than others. How is one enchantment better than another? They are designed for different situations. That makes the whole idea a bit pointless.

The thing is that that is nothing new and the new comparing system has nothing to do with that. It has been like that in previous games. This feature, which appears in loooots of RPGs, just make things easier.

I'm curious about that to. What I think is that maybe, when you click on other weapon, it shows you the stats of you weapon and the stats of the other, with different colours, and the spell effects of each one. It would be good, for comparing.

Does that make it right? Just because they failed in previous games doesn't mean they have to make the same mistakes all over again. Since they overhauled the entire system, this is something that could have easily been done better. But I'm hoping it will look good and work very well when we finally see it. Something that can probably be easily ignored, hopefully.

The game tells you which weapon of yours is the best? With a satellite GPS accurate compass? And the removed fixed leveled areas to make everything scale with the player so they are allowed to go to any location in Skyrim?

For a game rated Mature, there sure are a lot of features fit for a rated Everyone. :(

Well yes because it worked fine and nobody cared. Suddenly it's problem because BGS does it. It didn't "fail" and you can't say it could have been done better when you know nothing about it at all other than it is there somehow. Hopefully yes it will be not intrusive though.

Im not too happy about this as I feel it puts more 'game' into my 'world' than Id like.

This.

Seriously though, I really like reading your topics Merari, cause I'm pretty much having the same issues with this game so far as you are - as it would seem.
Cutting so many features from old elder scrolls games - like Spellmaking - pretty much removing the RPG from elder scrolls one bit at a time and instead making
a action/adventure game for a mainstream audience.

This is how I see it atm but I hope that I'm gonna be VERY WRONG when the game comes out. :)

What I'm saying is that it's not a useless feature that dumbs down the game or anything alike. And... personally, I prefer being able to see the values than having to try them. It's a game, after all... and it's not so difficult to know that a sword of the ancient and powerful dwemer is more powerful than your steel sword.

So the use of a sorted index is dumb, while manually scanning and ranking over and over again is "smart"?

Yes, I realize this is a very small thing, but it's the principle that counts. Why do we need help with selecting which gear is best for us? Is the majority of Bethesda's fanbase that stupid? No, it isn't.

In your opinion. And how do you know?

I'm sure they gave the inventory system a much needed overhaul, and no, I can't say it could be done better when i haven't seen it. My mistake. I just hope I'm wrong, and that it won't feel like hand holding to ME. Judging from this thread we all have different takes on what makes something feel like hand holding to us.

I kind of see it the other way around. You're the one who automatically assumes the feature is there because they "think" you can't do it. It's not there because they think you can't do it, but because they imagine you think it trivial and just time consuming. It requires so little thought they might as well do it for you. Basically, they expect you to be so smart you would find it tedious and beneath you, like a 10th grader forced to do 3rd grader work.

Okay this is just ridiculous.

So the game telling you that a weapon with 10dmg is better than one with 5 dmg is considered hand holding... because going trough the entire inventory, memorizing the different stats and then comparing the two is the main experience in RPGs, because it makes you... think?

No, really, this is a [censored] stupid thing to complain about, I was thinking if people can bring up any more [censored] things after "only one companion", but this did not take long...

I'm sorry, but going trough an entire table of weapons and armor comparing their numbers won't make you feel any smarter, it's not immersive, not interesting, it's busywork. And saying that it basically removes the choice from the player's hands are also over exaggerated. Different types of weapons have different properties, you need to decide if you want an axe for bleeding or a mace for ignoring armor, the game won't tell you which one is better in what situation. And the best is the enchantments. It will possibly tell you if the weapon is strong with enchantments or not or which enchantment is better on which weapon, but will it help you in every case? You might go with your uber flaming claymore, seeing how that has the best stats, only to realize you barely have any points in two-handed, and you're fighting a fire atronach, where your enchantment is useless.

I mean, crap, did it make you feel smarter knowing that the ebony weapons are better than the iron weapons?

So what you're saying is that you don't actually need the game to tell you that, and you don't even need the weapon stats?

I rest my case. =)
