"The game clearly tells you which items are direct upgrades and even what the best items you are carrying are. "

http://www.ripten.com/2011/08/25/one-hour-with-skyrim-finally-made-me-a-true-believer-hands-on/2/

Im not too happy about this as I feel it puts more 'game' into my 'world' than Id like.
It promotes powergaming and implies people arent clever enough to look at stats.
I never really cared about the 'best' weapon in an Elder Scrolls game as I believe this is the wrong type of game to powergame.
I prefer picking a weapon that fits my character and that I find pleasant to look at.
For instance, in Oblivion I always used a plain silver or daedric longsword and never didnt I give Umbra back to Clavicus.

In my mind this is a bit like the quest compass.
Hand holding and directing the player down a pre-set path when the premise of the game should be discovery, exploration and choice.
Not going for the best damage per second, to me that is wholly immaterial and I wouldnt like being told by the game that my silver dagger isnt good enough.

How do other people feel about this?
I would like to hear opinions.

So you don't like more content or something? I am confused. The game is not about the looks of the weapon, is about how fast you will put your enemy down. If I had to use an ugly sword to do it, i'd prefer it.

Well that's kind of a useless addition. Shouldn't really be bothersome but it sounds quite stupid

Good then the people complaining that they can't compare their gear because of the way menus are laid out will have no problem finding the good stuff.
Personally the argument that it is too much game because it tells you whats good without looking at stats is ridiculous. Looking at stats is totally not gamey or anything and looking at them doesn't make you clever.

I too use the weapons I like though whether powerful or not, I go for looks, and if you do how does this really bother you since the stats don't matter?

No my dislike is twofold.

I dont like being told what to do in the game. Be that a quest compass or an inventory that keeps reminding me that my silver dagger is inferior to the loot I pick up.

Secondly I feel it detracts from the 'world' I am in and makes it more of a 'game'.
Why would my hero be constantly reminded that other weapons are better when my character would never use anything but the family heirloom sword, for example? It diminishes roleplaying by setting an 'optimum path'.

It's kinda daft but I guess it won't stop us from ignoring it and wearing what we want instead.

So the reason for this thread is that you would be offended that the game insulted your Silver Dagger?

The game can tell me what it likes, I'll just ignore it, and use whatever I think my character would use. Played a fair few games with different text colours in the inventory for this, never bothered me tbh.

Alot of RPGs do this. Mass effect 1, and castle crashers are examples. On a weapon, it would show you + and - how good it is compared to your currently equipped one.

Nothing wrong with this. Just more nitpicking as is the use on these forums.

P.S. I never pay attention to the best weapons and armour, usually wear what looks good and is also good, balance of both worlds.

Yes, that is a good point.
It depends on how intrusive this will be in the inventory.
Lets hope it is subtle and easily ignored.

edit: to poster above: I dont consider Mass Effect an RPG.

Doesn't really bother me seeing as say in oblivion just go to weapons tab and sort weapons from greatest to less atk. I guess this is their way of doing that will the new hud. I'm still gonna use w/e weapon i damn well choose lol. IF it where to auto equip the strongest weapon in ur inventory then i would be pissed but since no i don't really care

I don't see it that way. Seems to me that it's just a convenience feature so you can more easily find the more powerful items in your inventory. As long as I can still see the stats for an item I can make a decision for myself.

Of course, because scrolling though a list and looking at tool tips with numbers on them enhances your gameplay significantly... And yes, I'm being sarcastic.

I find there is a massive difference between this sort of handholding in the UI, and handholding in the game. It can give me whatever hints it likes when the game is paused, it's actual on game screen stuff like POI or quest markers on the compass, which is the hand holding I could do without.

Think of it this way, if you actually wanted to select a weapon based on stats this let's you select the best one and leave the menu and get back to your "world". If you don't pick equipment based off of stats why does this apply to you?

It tells you what the best equipment you have is not what you have to use. But since you say stats don't matter to you and you say that you choose based on looks and role-playing why is that an issue?

Just because it tells you what your best items are doesn't mean you cant just ignore it and do what you want. It already did tell you what was best with the associated stats, I don't see the difference. Now for the min/max type, it will just be a quicker process to figure out whats best.

Pretty much. I'm just kinda fearing bright red texts saying "This sword is crap! Use that other sword you got instead!"
If that is not the case however, I won't have a problem with it.

My favorite part about that article is that he was whining about all the "johnny-come-lately" fans who didn't know the Elder Scrolls, yet he linked to the Elder Scrolls Wikia page for the Bosmer race.
Any true Elder Scrolls fan uses the UESP, not the Wikia.

Yes, that is true.
Reading replies in this thread I realised that in Oblivion you could sort your weapons from most damage to least damage in the inventory as well.
I did not find that intrusive at all, in fact I just ignored it, never used it and totally forgot it was even there until I was reminded in this thread.
If it is like that, non-intrusive, then I have no problems with it at all.

Yeah but it's one more hand holding thing. Eventually they're on everything and everywhere that they're hard to ignore for those who don't like being hand held like a 9 year old.

I still don't get it 100% though. How does the game tells us this? When Todd opened the UI before and looked at items I saw no such thing.
