Just throwing in my 2 cents here but I would not be so concerned about map size as I would actual game content. Todd said that Skyrim is to big. Like over 300 hours of game play and they stopped counting past that. So what if the outer map size is not as big as Oblivions. They have added I think something like 150 hand made caves and dungeons. So, the game over all is huge! I suppose they could copy/paste some grass, trees, rocks and some critters to make it bigger but will that actually give the game more content? Not really. But if what we get is not big enough then hope there is a modder out there that can and will expand the map size to suit those that want to aimlessly wonder around just to have fun exploring.

Cheers

I don't think that's possible without practically remaking the entire map.

I hope they aren't right. And that if they are, that the world and dungeons are WAY more varied than in Oblivion, in order to compensate.

Besides, didn't Pete already confirmed it was about the same size as Oblivion? I prefer to believe him rather than any journalist.

The dungeons should be much more interesting in general, they have 8x the dungeon design staff they had in OB, and fewer dungeons to spread themselves between.

Size honestly doesn't matter to me as far as map size as long as there is alot of content and dungeons and everything looks unique I'll be happy. Oblivion felt a bit too big with everything looking the same.

I made Skyrim and Cyrodiil the same size(volume) and compared the cities.

Nice job, Luke. I did that once by making the cell size the same and got similar results, though I think it was a tiny bit smaller. Anyway, I think it should be pointed out that while Whiterun is similar in size to Chorrol, that doesn't rule out it being more packed, since Chorrol was a massive waste of space, so much open grass.

I know. That *should* make them more interesting than even in Morrowind. But we'll see...

Assuming the cells are the same size. I'm going by what Todd said. "About the same size as Oblivion."

Whiterun looks pretty dense going by the quick fly by shot in the trailer. I'm really anticipating seeing the sizes of the other cities. I think Windhelm may be the largest.

Yeah people arent bothered about anything.
It doesnt matter if its forced third person or no armour degradation or no spellmaking or even less skills and even less spells or no atrributes or no birthsigns or merged greaves and cuirass.
Its not bothering, is it, its all good?

Seriously, blatant siding with the cool people no matter what they say is so high-school.

Last I heard, the "cool" people are supposed to be the ones going against the grain, the ones who don't buy into what "the man" is telling them. What you just said is exactly what I think whenever I hear the same complaints over and over, using the same x and y reasons. We get it, you think Daggerfall and Morrowind were the Gods of gaming and RPG's, Oblivion is a blemish on the name of The Elder Scrolls because that's what the "true fans" say, and your hipster instincts don't sit pretty with the changes being made. Get over it, you have your Creation Kit, mod the game to your heart's content. Sure, it's not perfect, but expecting each and every feature you love to last forever, and allow for room to grow, just isn't feasible with the time and resources available to Bethesda. Besides, every choice they made, they made for a reason. They were design choices, not just laziness, or incompetence, or whatever else. They made a game, they made it how they so desired, and they made it great.

Anyway, the map is going to be Huge compared to practically every other game out there, and the content is going to blow every possible comparison out of the water. I have no doubt it will meet any and all reasonable expectations.

Both statements in the title are wrong. Skyrim will be bigger than Morrowind and as big as Cyrodiil, but it will feel bigger than Cyrodiil because of the rugged landscape and mountainous landscape. - Todd Himself.

i truely hope you're right as the size of TES game is why i love them so much. ely

one could miss oblivion's massive forests and swamps...but skyrim as far as i unserstand has everything more densely packed. that would be fine by me.

oblivion gives you that feeling of exploration, but at the same time the world seemed a bit hallow.

I'm guessing he means Skyrim on the http://www.skyrimportal.com/media/blogs/skyrim/empireoftamriel.gif not the ingame world size. In which case it is smaller than Cyrodiil and smaller than Morrowind (not smaller than Vvardenfell though!). I doubt they have had the chance to explore the world so much that they could come up with an accurate guess of the game world size.

More rampant speculation and running wild with the tiniest misinformation...

Look, it seems pretty clear to me that this was poor word choice on the part of the article. Everything we've heard, officially, is that the world is as big, if not a little smaller, than Oblivion. Considering how most of Oblivion was vast empty space, I'm excited that the team has taken the same area, but crammed more into it. This can be nothing but good for us.

Skyrim will definitely be bigger than morrowind, maybe not oblivion, because oblivion is massive....

Are you kidding? I mean, have you played Morrowind? Oblivion was waaay smaller than Vvardenfell, and thus, Skyrim is also smaller than Vvardenfell.

why would you believe 1 article that says something contrary to 40 others?

You really need to ask that question? People do that because the anticipation for Skyrim is enormous and therefore if ANYTHING WRITTEN ANYWHERE is against their liking, it annoys them. Could be graffiti written by a 3 year old on a wall in a bathroom in the Sahara desert and people would believe it...

It certainly feels that way doesn't it? Fact is though, Cyrodiil is larger than Vvardenfell. Vvardenfell feels larger because of the low view distance, lack of fast travel and slower walking speed. Oblivion feels smaller because of its large view distance and bowl shaped landscape (you can basically see across the entire map from a high point), and you run faster and there's fast travel.

It is amazing the number of previewers confusing lore with game information.

But the infatuation with map size some people have is also annoying. To make a tired, old, cliched joke: it isn't the size of Skyrim that matters, but what it does with it.

Pretty sure Cyrodiil was larger, in area, than Vvardenfell...

Confirmed to be the opposite actually. In the GT video interview with Todd at PAX, he said himself that it's the full game on display with Dragons turned off. The entire game is in the demo to explore, only for 15 minutes though. The MQ is even available, with the TGS gameplay showing one of the first quests.

Please stop typing like this its very anoying

On topic:

Yes Skyrim will be smaller than Oblivion as everyone knows, but Oblivion felt empty, and we already know there will be much more content(not just dungeons but also factions, probably more shrines, not to mention dragon fights) in Skyrim compared to Oblivion so why worried?
