The game won't save my progress

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 4:23 pm

I'm don't know were you live, but here in Sweden there aren't that many wallmarts (i.e none). And yes, I'm pretty much forced to be logged in to steam to be able to play the game. Steam isn't that bad, this is the first time I've had any problem with it. You can get close to all relevant games there, and the sales they sometimes do are awesome. As to the saves question, I'll say yes and no. Some games are saved in the Steam folder, but far from all are. I don't think the Fallout save folder is located there.

If the fallout save folder is not with your steam account, than the game did not install correctly. You should have in your "OS"\Users\"Name"\Documents\My Games\Fallout 3\, a file folder with the title "Saves" along with the configuration settings programs, Fallout and FalloutPrefs and a text file RendererInfo. I would suggest that you run another search for *.fos and search your entire hard drive.
If you cannot locate your save files in this manner, I suggest you contact Steam support. No Walmarts in Sweden? How did that happen? I thought they were everywhere.

Thanks for finding them, I'll se if they work. At this point I don't really care how the game gets saves, as long as it does. And I have already tried to use alt-tab and see if the saves are where they should be. They haven't been so far. I'm pretty sure I've done the save thing with and without GFWL running. God that software is awful... It takes forever ta accept my code even after I've typed it in.

Sorry about your Fallout 3, I hope you didn't lose anything important.

The commands didn't work... I feel bad about this, with you finding all these things without me being able to fix the game with them. It must be because I'm playing it through Steam. I'll see if someone has had a similar problem over there.
No worries about my system , my saves are intact. And dont feel bad for me spending time , I do it of my own volition ... Its sort of a quest lol.

Its very odd that your not getting a save folder in My documents/mygames/fallout3 and that your not getting one for your GFWL ID in the same directory. All indications of other referenced searches for this problem are they should be in one or the other.

The only difference im seeing that you have , is your installation on your D:\ drive ... and that you have a permissions problem with Data getting stored from D to C drive. (did you search D:\ for the .fos files ?) An obvious fix (albiet a pain) would be to install steam on C drive or windows on D drive.

Is ordering a Box copy off the internet for home delivery out of the question?

You see, the reason why I didn't install it on C:/ is because it doesn't have the space required to hold steam. It's all but used up, and my D:/ drive is becoming somewhat crowded to. I've been considering buying an external hard drive on which I can install all my games, since they seem to be taking up a lot of space.

I guess I could order a copy of the game online, but I'm kinda reluctant to do that. I've payed for the game already, I don't feel like I should have to again. My economy is quite limited, I can't afford buying a new game everytime I run into a problem.

Ah ha ... so possibly you dont have enough space on C:\ for it to create the required .ini and save folder plus saves. Maybe its requireing a fair amount of buffer to perform this action. Free up some space if possible ... maybe move stuff to D:\

How much space do you have on C:\ ???

By the way , im pretty sure you couldnt migrate that Fallout.ini from a different computer and have it work properly. So clear out the Fallout 3 folder under Mydocuments\Mygames. Maybe even reinstall the game with space freed up on C:\

Good idea. I only have 2,77 GB left out of 56 GB. I'll se if there's some unnececery stuff I can remove from it.

Ok, so I just moved my THQ folder containing 3 games, and I just freed the C:/ drive of 13 GB. I now have about 16 GB of space in it, and if that isn't enough, then I don't know. Anyway, I'll delete all previous fallout material and start up a new download. The game should be fully installed when I check tomorrow.

And I never really expected it to work when I sent the files from another computer, it was just that I thought it couldn't hurt to try.

No luck... I installed it again, and now I don't even have a fallout3 folder in /my games.

Was that even after trying to save? It might only create that path after saveing.
But was also thinking if you had the udated GFWL app , it might interfere with the default save path.
You should have a folder called "Microsoft games for windows Live" In there in the Xlive might be your save path. But ofcourse would only save with being signed in to GFWL.

I check before and after trying to save, and still nothing. I found the "Microsoft games for windows live" folder, but couldn't find anything even closely resembling save files. I also checked the "Microsoft Games" folder, and the "Windows Live" folder, with no luck.

And I believe I was signed in to GFWL when I tried to play the game.

FO3 apparently saves differently if you log in & when you don't so if play logged in then play not logged in you won't see the logged in saves

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but no. I've tried both alternatives, none work.

Did you try calling Steam and say "Give Me My MONEY Back!!!" or tell me how to fix?

Yes its very odd. And you could be missing 1 little thing. Point is , it doesnt work , and you paid for it to work ,,, right???

IDK ... I have an aversion to DL games for money ... so I dont really know your options.

I do know your particular problem is rare , maybe one of a kind.. So hence the one particular thing .

Possibly write a log of everything youve done (be as specific as possible) then a DX diag ... err how ever thats done. (printed all your system specs post) speaking of ... you didnt give us one. Not that I could tell from there , but someone might.

If your gona do that .... I would just start a new post though ..... so bettter techies dont have to dig.

You know what, I don't really care anymore. I appreciate your help, but it obviously won't work. I might try again in a few months, but for now I'll just quit it. And no, I doubt I can get my money back. It's unfortunate, but I'll just have to deal with it. I can always play New Vegas (it works, I checked), and since I just bought Skyrim I bet I'll spend some time on that.

But thanks anyway.
