Is the Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

Post » Tue Oct 12, 2010 8:14 pm

Depends on my mood at the time. If i am very down about something then the coffee cup is half empty. But if i am up beat then the coffee cup is full. For coffee there is no half full option.

The glass is half full, but the contents are frozen.

I must admit that I never understood this question. The two statements are not exclusive so what kind of idiot thinks that a glass is half full while not being half empty or vice versa? How can it be half full without being half empty or vice versa? In order for it to be half full the other half needs to be empty (or vice versa), so not only are the two statements not mutually exclusive, they directly imply each other.

This. But not because I took it too literal, I like enjoying different views on things(and above view is my favorite). :)

But just so you know, the IBT (Internet Brain Trust) apparently frowns upon such a view and labels it as wannabe witty and evasive.

Whereas you my friend, are seriously the real deal :)

The line of liquid is midway between the highest and lowest point of the glass.

The glass is full. I don't have a complete molecular breakdown of its contents at the moment. I'll get back to you.

That doesn't mean that the glass is half full/empty. Haven't you heard of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capillary_action? It may sound like a cheap metal band, but it's actually serious bzns.

Not only that, but we haven't been given the shape of the glass. If it's not an ideal cylinder we're going to need a mathematical expression of the shape as well as the chemical make-up of the liquid and the atmosphere, atmospheric pressure, and the temperature of the environment.

Okay, okay, it's half-full of vodka and half-full of...oh, blast, what passes for humor with the young people these days...farts? Is "farts" funny...or no...?

You just need to relax, Andy. As I've already suggested in another thread, let http://www.endlessvideo.com/watch?v=26FrPeoKJNg&start=0m11s&end=2m6s loop a couple times and you should feel much better.

If the temperature is low enough so that they're liquid, sure.

So, you're saying that no gasses are allowed into this magical glass? :)

It's not that they're not allowed, but they apparently don't count for filling the glass because if they did the glass would constantly be completely full, even in outer space because the outer space is filled with very low-pressure gas consisting of mostly hydrogen.

I think a more important question is how did they liquidize confidence and manage to fill the glass with it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jp-MXaNlD5g

Isn't it most likely either full or empty? :) Wait, do sub-atomic particles count? What about photons? :P

Well if you want to be technical about it, it can never possibly be empty because even in "perfect vacuum" pairs of particle-antiparticle pairs are constantly appearing and annihilating each other. So no matter what you do with the glass (short of destroying it), it's completely full. Yup, the Universe is a mighty optimistic bastard.

My point. :foodndrink:

Full!

Then again, the universe as we know it is mostly empty space...even solid lead.

Empty? Crap. :(

Actually, in that "empty" space in-between the electrons and the nuclei and in-between the atoms and molecules themselves particle/antiparticle pairs constantly appear and annihilate each other as well. Read up on virtual particles and quantum foam.

I'm a bit more newb when it comes to the details, but Veeno is right about the particles. Space technically isn't empty.
