Is the Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

Post » Tue Oct 12, 2010 3:33 pm

Neither. My butler fills my glass after each sip. In fact, I'm not even typing this, my butler is, as I tell him what to type while he fills my glass.

So your butler is half full?

Well, I'd just rather have a bottle in front of me,

than a frontal lobotomy.

in other words:

Early in the evening, my glass is always half empty, going on utter-void-of-liquid, in the hopes of replenishing said empty vessel.

Later in the evening my glass is usually still half full, and shouldn't be re-filled anymore, since I probably just took a crap in someones tuba
-oh, they said sit in with the band.. I'm sorry.

I must admit that I never understood this question. The two statements are not exclusive so what kind of idiot thinks that a glass is half full while not being half empty or vice versa? How can it be half full without being half empty or vice versa? In order for it to be half full the other half needs to be empty (or vice versa), so not only are the two statements not mutually exclusive, they directly imply each other.

The question is usually asked in order to determine one's outlook. The problem with the question is that it implies there are two answers, when in fact there are four:

The pessimist: "This is terrible! I've already consumed half of my beverage!" :sadvaultboy:

The optimist: "This is great! I still have half of my beverage!"

The literal minded: "There is no difference. Six of one, half a dozen of the other." :grad:

The engineer: "The glass is the wrong size."

The belief is that which ever viewpoint you present gives an indicator of your overall view. The problem with that belief is that a person's mood at the time of questioning can influence the answer.

It's just half. there is half a glass of whatever left. Not half full, not half empty, just half.

That's what I've always thought. Although, I usually have a moderately optimistic outlook on life

Finland is the new ice hockey world championship gold medalist.

The glass is overflowing. With diamonds. And expensive champagne. And it's made out of GOLD!

Tonight, every Finn's cup is full! :celebration: :foodndrink: :trophy: :twirl:

Tomorrow, they will be empty! :snoring: :sleep2:

What they said.

It would be just too good a world if "ihanaa" meant "girl" and "leijonat" meant "on", wouldn't it?

The important thing is whats in the glass.

Could be a poison or a delectable ambrosia.

The glass is two times too large for the amount of liquid it is currently holding.

It is also at 50% of its maximum emptiness.

In all likihood neither of these are true: it's 100% full, just not 100% full of water :P

(it can't be in a vacuum as then the water would evaporate and not be half-anything with water)

It could freeze and thus be half-something with water. Or "ice", but ice is water.

But then it'll expand past the half-way mark! :o

Not if there's less than half of the glass of it while it's liquid.

Not if there's less than half of the glass of it while it's liquid.

So, now it's a question of what the pressure and temperature for the water and glass is. All that's left to figure out is the rate of exchange for the dynamic equilibrium and we can accurately predict the exact amount of space the water is taking up at any given moment!

Better use a vacuum with an ambient temperature of absolute zero to eliminate all variables.

Had to squint a little to read your fine print lol. And yeah, not too many people talking about philisophical junk and outlooks on life, just a lot of bad, but entertaining, jokes and puns

If someone poured me a glass to its 100% maximum capacity and I drank half of it, I would then say the glass is half empty.

If someone poured me a glass to 50% of its capacity, I would say it is half full.
