Is the Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

Post » Tue Oct 12, 2010 12:52 am

As the title suggests this is a thread about what how you view life, positively or negatively.

I personally am a very pessimistic person, but you probably wouldnt be able to tell by looking at me. I am ussually smiling and wear bright clothes and talk a lot (to people I know) and seem generally happy, but in reality I have always had a very very low self-esteem and dont believe in myself one bit. Its not really depression I just have been brought up to be very humble but the humbleness has turned into believing that everyone is better than me and I will only fail etc. and recent events in my life have proved these thoughts to be true.

But enough about my sad outlook on life, whats yours? :P

Is it being filled or emptied?

Spoiler
If the former, half full. If the latter, half empty.

EDIT: And, funnily enough, that probably is descriptive of my outlook :P. It varies with context.

It's just half. there is half a glass of whatever left. Not half full, not half empty, just half.

If the glass was in the forest and no one was there to see it, would it be half anything?

Wait but what's in the glass? If it was full of orange juice, I'd prefer it to be half full. But... you know... if it was full of... death or something... I'd rather it be half empty.

Is the Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

I must admit that I never understood this question. The two statements are not exclusive so what kind of idiot thinks that a glass is half full while not being half empty or vice versa? How can it be half full without being half empty or vice versa? In order for it to be half full the other half needs to be empty (or vice versa), so not only are the two statements not mutually exclusive, they directly imply each other.

You're making it too literal.

It's about whetehr your outlook is positive or negative. Obviously both are technically true, but it's about whether you look at the good or the bad.

There's no "technically true". It's either true or not.

It is quite clearly twice as big as it needs to be. In this age of cuts, we should ask ourself should we not limit ourself to smaller glasses? This question keeps coming up so there must be many such glasses that are incorrectly sized.

All I care about is turning the water into steam and maintaining a constant level and pressure inside of the glass under all steam loads and preventing radiation leaks.

The problem with it being that these days, its too widely known to have any effectiveness for that purpose. If a person hadn't heard of it, it might provide some indication as to their inclinations (though whether it actual would or not is debatable), but pretty much anyone on the internet would've come across it already .

Finland is the new ice hockey world championship gold medalist.

The glass is overflowing. With diamonds. And expensive champagne. And it's made out of GOLD!

Metaphorically it can be either. But technically it's both...

On topic, I suppose I'm mostly an optimistic person

Outside of some rough days (extremely rough depending), I seem to keep a pretty half-full mentality.

For the most part, half-full, I'd rather look for the good then the bad. It can be situational though, if someone poured me half a pint of beer I would be like cool its half full, if they drank half of my pint I would be pissed and its half empty.
