The glorious return of lanterns!

If you are travelling with a party of warriors, exploring a dark cave populated by dragons and trolls...believe, the guy that lights his way with a candle is gonna die.

That would be great if we can use lanterns and candles besides torches.

Colored lights are definitely a must-have in Skyrim. I didn't really like how most of Oblivion's dungeons just had generic blue/red/green "glows" in each room. Morrowind had a far more interesting approach by using actual colored candles and lanterns.

Candles are spreadsheety? What?

He read somewhere that the levelling system was streamlined because it was too spreadsheety therefore all other removals are for the same reason.

Had it in morrowind, and they said they made this game more manually, like they did morrowind, so i'm expecting these to be all over the place. we already know they're there, and we can probably assume we can carry those.

They said that you can shoot lanterns so that they land and create fire.. wouldn't it be neat if you could throw your lantern to make fire as either a way of escape or for minor combat advantages?

For some reason I instantly thought of Minecraft and wood houses LOL, sorry to detract from Skyrim but I couldn't help but share that. I am most certain others are smiling over the thought as well.

Oh man, I love Lanterns. I loaded my house in Morrowind (xbox) up with so many, I broke the game permanently for that save. (Autosave would load on entry and immediately lock up)

I love the lanterns in Morrowind, having the different colored shades and decorating the house with them. along with the candles.
Light in Skyrim should be more realistic. No light if there is not a source.

*snip*

I've met my first candlesixual in this thread :bonk:

There were candles and all the other light sources in Oblivion but you just couldn't carry them, which I'm sure was another small thing that couldn't be added in because of the time constraints of making the game for a console that didn't exist yet. I didn't find this to be an issue but it would be nice to have. I'm not saying your one of these people but usually the little things like these that don't really matter for the most part are what people say ruined Oblivion, which is just....wrong. However, I know your not saying that but just pointing that out. Maybe portable light sources will be in Skyrim but we just don't know yet.

Well less variability in game, thats feel of too much genericness feel of unfinished work ruin game experience, and thats feel based out of many things not only from less equipable light sources, didn't you not feel it while playing Oblivion?
I cant play vanilla Oblivion because of this but Modblivion feels much better I must say.

Pfft no, that was the old spellmaking system that Todd called spreadsheety. :P

With the release of http://cdn.gamerant.com/wp-content/uploads/Skyrim-screenshot-Khajiit.jpg I think its safe to say that lanterns are in.

Nope, never had that issue. I started with Arena and played the first two games and when Morrowind came out I was disappointed with it. Sure it had a lot of little things but most of them you think "oh cool" when you first see them but then they quickly get to the point where you don't even notice them at all. The only thing I really enjoyed about Morrowind was the main story, which was the best of the story. Then Oblivion came out and improved combat and the world and it's inhabitants and made the side quests amazingly deep and fun. Finally I felt like I was actually in the game for the first time since Daggerfall, maybe even more so as the world was closer to feeling real. Personally if the main quest line was longer and more involving (the story was fine) and if the few problems Oblivion had (one being level-scaling) weren't there then Oblivion would have been better than Daggerfall. Now it seems they might actually pull this off. They have already done it the way I would hope they would, now I just need to see it in action and see how if the side quests are as good as Oblivion's and if the main story is as good as Morrowind's and then it might actually pass Daggerfall.

But I digress. I would be happy to see the return of individual light sources but it wouldn't be ground breaking to me and I would rather see me be able to throw a lit torch down the hallway to light an area or have light spells stick to the wall or floor when they contact to light the area as well.

With the mention of oil spills that can be ignited, I see plenty of opportunities for using torches offensively. It'd also be interesting if one could extinguish/light candles and lanterns placed in dungeons with spells. Quietly knocking over a lantern with a well-placed arrow and then darting across the room before the enemy gains their bearings would open up a far more interactive approach for stealth characters.

I would love to see the return of varying light sources, but only if the amount of light given from each varied.

Aka a Candle would give off the least amount of light. Then a lantern (Obviously dependant on size though). Then a Torch with a raw flame would give off the most light.

Maybe we should be able to run around with Orbs, or Varla stones for light sources aswell. Ya i know, I'm a dreamer :)

Could be handy for stealth characters if the sneaking system really is as improved as they claim it is. I'm a bit tired of my assassins running around indoors with bare torches in tow. :P

YESSS!

I want lanterns reallly really badly in my Skyrim. In Morrowind, I had a house (well, really it was the house of some poor orc in Caldera...) that was filled all the way up to the overflow loot bag with candles and lanterns. And I always, always carried on my my prized pilgrim's lantern. It's kind of ridiculous how excited movable light sources would make me! :P
