The grand European Adventure

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:37 am

I currently have a dream to drive through every (Shengen area) country in Europe starting from Lisbon, Portugal finishing in Athens, Greece

Helpful link: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Area

Are they're any complexities with using a Shengen visa in this context.

I plan on Flying to Lisbon and purchasing a car and using it on the journey then selling it on arrival in Athens and flying home

Is there a Ferry that carries cars from Finland to Estonia?

Does any one have ideas on costs, time or any faults in this plan?

If anyone has an idea on a route to travel on they would be appreciated

Is this plausible?

Definitely. Well, cruise ships actually. But they do take cars, though.

Why not just rent a car? Buying and selling one in a foreign country isn't that easy. I don't know about Europe, but in the US if you rent a car in one state, you can return it a branch of the rental company in another state. There might be something similar to that.

You're welcome to Lisbon if you come, maybe I'll see you in Lisbon's subway :teehee:

I have no idea on the costs though, I only know you can buy a crappy car in Portugal for maybe 2000€.

Oh yeah, and buying a car is totally free. Dude, you're planning a trip all across Europe, yet you don't want to spend a couple hundred dollars.. Good luck with that trip.

Ok, pay 2000-4000 Euros for a car on the whole trip + fuel or pay daily/weekly rental cost that would surely equal to
more than 4000 Euros

EDIT: why did that create a link? O.o

It's pretty common to buy instead of rent if you're going on a long road trip actually, and it usually works out cheaper than renting once you sell it.
Of course you have to factor in repairs and insurance and registration and all that, but that's something that you have to weigh up yourself. Spending a couple hundred extra dollars might not seem like much to you, but when you're planning a journey like that, any money saved can make a big difference.

It'll save the trouble of selling a car elsewhere. It's not like they sell instantly. And if they do, you're not going to get anything good for it. Especially if it's a foreign country in which you don't even know the language, then it's pure hell.

If you're planning something this big, cheaping out makes no sense at all. If you're on that tight a budget, just buy a bunch of postcards and call it a day.

It's much more easy to use train or bus than a car. A car will cost you a lot, to buy (renting is a no-go area) and to maintain (fuel and services). In addition, you do not mention any timeframe for this tour. I met a lot of US people who just travelled 3 days in London, 3 days in Ireland ("because I have an irish ancestor"), 2 days in Paris including one in Eurodisney, 3 days in Italy and then fly back to the US to tell "I know Europe, I travelled all through". That is a pure bs approach of travel, very superficial.
If you want to real travel and get in touch with the people and the countries, you will need to spend at least 1 month in each of the major one and 1-3 weeks in the smaller (Portugal, Greece, Belgium...). It means something like 1 full year. Better think about a way to sustain yourself, a job or something else.

You can get a train ticket that covers most of Europe (and Turkey etc) for a month for about €400 (Assuming you are < 25).

If you are young, you may struggle to rent (Most places don't let you rent until you are < 22 - 25) anyway.

@ Assasin
I could always dump the car...

@ Rat slayer
Yes, I'm 14
But don't instantly assume I'm immature.
Of course I don't plan on doing it now but in the future, you've gotta have a goal in life.

Why not get a motorcycle?

Oh and I don't wanna sound like a buzz kill, but a lot might have changed between now and the time you actually go on this trip, so it might be better to get information then. Whatever projected calculations you come up with now would be next to useless.

Hey, when we were his age, we were allowed to have dreams and aspirations. The way we talk to him, I wouldn't be surprised if he wound up so disillusioned with life. Heck, even at 20, I still plan out trips that I don't plan on taking for ages. Nothing wrong with that.

He could always be like other 14 year olds and be dreaming of nothing but losing his virginity by 16. That would be stupid.

Actually, I never thought about getting a Motorcycle. Thanks for giving me that idea, that's 1,000,000 times better than a car. Thanks! :)

Yeah, I pretty sure the information will change by the time this happens

I'll be sure to take pictures

And I'm currently designing a route to take.

You'd definitely feel more like you're part of the scene if you're on a motorcycle, rather that driving around some cage. I'm glad you like the idea. :D
