Do the graphics change TES?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:25 am

Lets be honest, Oblivion didn't have the best graphics in the world, but i think that is what made Oblivion so good ! So if the graphics is going to be like Fable or Two Worlds, it ain't TES!! Im sorry for any spelling errors :(

BTW its my firs thread. :) I meant oblivion is GREAT because of the graphics it has! As a matter of fact i still play it. If the graphics are awesome like GTA, CoD, RDR, Two worlds, Fable, ETC. Everybody misunderstood me...

someone hasn't seen the gameplay trailer...

And oblivion was made in 2006, it had really good graphics back then.

EDIT: Link to the gameplay trailer can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSRtYpNRoN0

Of course they do, graphics are our one window into seeing the world. If skyrim looked like, say, dead space, it would have a completely different vibe to one that looked like my little pony.

Spoiler
And I would happily play both
Spoiler
I mean, seriously, they both sound awesome

Welcome to the Forums :)

Personally I don't think graphics are something of high importance in TES. I can enjoy Morrowind alot more than oblivion. It was better, even if the graphics weren't as good.

Sure, good graphics would make the experience more enjoyable. But graphics isn't what TES is about.

Oblivion had awesome graphics for its time.

I'm not quite following your logic either.

Great graphics is important for most games today. It depends on what the purpose of the game is, of course. Games like Mario don't need good graphics, and they can still be awesome, having in mind what they're trying to achieve.

TES is trying to achieve this huge open world where freedom is very important. There's an epic background stories and tons of stuff to do and lots of places to go to. Each TES game is a world itself.
Do graphics matter in a game like this? Obviously, yeah. It's how you view the world.

Do other things matter as well? Of course. Sound, story/lore, gameplay (combat, what you can do, etc... etc...) matter as well.

But I still don't really understand where you're going. No idea what you mean with "Do the graphics change TES?".

Oblivion was amazing graphics for the time. I think TES has always tried to get the best graphics it can or at least since morrowind

Also Fable and Two worlds aren't exactly the greatest examples of the 'best' graphics :o

Function over form. Graphics are important, especially in a game where immersion is a key element, such as TES. But as a gamer and TES fan, they are of minimal importance to me personally. A good example is crysis. That game looked amazing, and still does. It's around 4(?) years old, and still looks better than most games do now. But it was also not fun, again just my opinion. The gameplay got old fast, and crysis 2 was even worse about it.

Really, it's just a matter of opinion. I think Skyrim looks really good anyway, graphically I mean.

Graphics don't make the game. Look at Morrowind, still the BEST TES game imho. Look at Baulders Gate 2 (bioware >.>) still one of the best RPGs ever made.

So long as Bethesda fixes their damn engine with its clipping and floating I'll be happy.

Yeah but if Bethesda would release a Morrowind 2 now with the same graphics, the sales would most likely be horrible. And ratings would most likely not be that great.

Standards change. Sales are dependent on that. Graphics do matter, like Pete Hines said. Maybe not to you personally, but it matters to the TES itself (seeing as what it tries to achieve) and to Bethesda.

So that means obviously that only very few of us don't place much importance on graphics. Shame...

Remember, Oblivion was one of the first major games to come out for the 360 and it had beautiful graphics back then. Judging it now doesn't make sense, seeing it's now 2011, not 2006.

Also, another thing to point out that a LOT of people miss; This is an open world game, Skyrim's game world size will roughly be around Oblivion's (43 miles.) That's a HUGE amount of detail, so of course it won't have Crysis level graphics, because Skyrim isn't linear and doesn't have seperate levels. Not to mention the consoles have reached their graphical capability limit.

And I don't exactly get your point that you're trying to get across here, could you specify/eleborate more?

it affected my opinion of Morrowind I could not play that game for more than 20 min at a time becuase the graphics were so bad, but I later got used to it, could anyone tell in that game the difference between a guy and a girl?

Lol, I remember the "Gold Box" games, Darklands, and even Arena. Graphics do help immerse one in the atmosphere of the game, and are more significant, I think, depending on the game type.

I loved the graphics in Oblivion (for its time), however, there were still some things I preferred in Morrowind.

Yep. Both MW and OB were amazing for when they came out and Skyrim is clearly going after the same thing.

If Skyrim has the same graphics as Oblivion, I would still buy it and play a lot longer than any new games with better graphics. Although I should say 'different' graphics instead of 'better', because it is an artistic style thing also.

Lol I guess thats a generation thing.
I remember the first pc in our street, and all the kids would go to that house to play pong.
Graphics have sure come a long way since then but to this day I still think Morrowind graphics are amazing and beautiful.
I remember thinking when I first played it that I wished my father couldve seen this, it would have blown his mind.
Coming out of the sewers for the first time in Oblivion wouldve outright stunned him into disbelief.

For me, what Ive seen, Skyrim is going to be graphical heaven.

I honestly dont think Morrowinds graphics are all that bad, its just they jump around in quality and it kinda bothers me, the spell effects and water look great, while the land and people look like crap

How about an anology?

What's more important for a movie? The story/plot or the special effects?

Well, the obvious answer is the story. Some people still enjoy watching the original Star Trek series, despite the crappy special effects, because it has good stories.

Does that make special effects pointless, though? Consider the movie Dragonheart. It may just be me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It thought it had an awesome story and it had good special effects. Now imagine if Draco was some giant stop motion puppet instead of a sophisticated CG character? Could the movie have still worked? Probably. The effects, however, made Draco a much more believable character that seemed a part of the world around him. He interacted with others and others interacted with him. He seemed more "real" to me than stop motion puppet could have (although they did do a good job with Vermithrax Pejorative).

And, of course, movies based on effects alone rarely stand for very long. The may wow you at first, but then you get bored of them, like Avatar.

I think many people don't realize that at the release time the graphics of both Morrowind and Oblivion were very very good! Hell, even Daggerfall.

Crysis also doesn't have the best graphics in the world... In a couple of years. :P
