The great warriors and the great mages

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 8:57 am

Now, I know VS threads aren't allowed, but considering it's a genuine question, I think this can pass.

I was just wondering for a crisis like Red Mountain or the Oblivion Gates, if the citizens could call back some people from the past to help out, who would they have chosen? The great warriors or the great mages? I was thinking it would probably be the mages, as some are reputed to have done things that were truly amazing, while a warrior is still just a guy swinging a sword. Although, for presence, a warrior would be a better bet, I reckon. Imagine Reman Cyrodiil or Tiber Septim, charging into battle before you. It would get the troops a lot more fired up than some nerd peppering the enemy with fireballs from a distance.

What do you think?

Once again, NOT a VS thread. I'm just wondering according to lore...:)

I would want Mudcrab Merchant (Also known as Lorkhan) to be my buddy in a fight.

I'm kinda partial to Rolf the Uber, though Im-Leet is probably closest second.

For warriors:
Talos.

The HoonDing.

Trinimac.

Vivec.

Leki.

Reman.

Auri-El.

Wulfharth.

Morihaus.

Pelinal.

That's my list, and pretty much in that order. Though Vivec did kill Tiber Septim once...but I mentioned Talos, not the Emperor.

Mind if you explain, even a little, of why you chose that list, Luagar2? I'm just a little curious, even though it is a list of what MK chose.

Forgot about HoonDing and Leki.

Luagar probably chose that list because that is literally the list of greatest warriors EVER on Mundus. EVER. Even in the Mythic. Starting from top to bottom.

Didn't the HoonDing beat Talos? That whole deal with Redguard, Cyrus beating Richton et al? I suppose it ended up that Talos won anyway, but that wasn't exactly through martial prowess.

I'd personally choose King Wulfharth if only because he's so awesome.

Failing that, the Underking or Pelinal Whitestrake.

I assume you meant Arctus? Wulfharth IS the Underking.

I should have put it in quotations or something. I am referring to the common perceptions of the Underking and Wulfharth being two different men - using the stereotypical commoner perceptions of both.

Personally, I think both Arctus AND Wulfharth are the Underking. Myths echo up and down the chain, with Lorkhan at the top, Wulfharth beneath him, and, perhaps, Arctus beneat Wulfharth. Soul of a soul of a soul.

Don't forget Syrabane. As I've said before, anyone who can save the world by the use of the Warlock's Ring gets my vote.

LOL..perhaps Syrabane was so powerful the deed was accomplished despite the Warlock's Ring and not because of it?

In Tamriel, the best champions can fight with weapons and spells together.

I believe you just answered your own question. This is the lore forum, after all! ;)

I would say Sotha Sil before he became a mad recluse. Either him or Zurin Arctus, before he became the Underking, when he was still a good guy. I don't think the common people would want an entity they see as "evil" being their champion. I think I'd take the great mages over the warriors, because yes the warriors had the inspiring presence, but really not much else. Nice equipment perhaps, and cunning on the battlefield. But it's the mages who really did the fantastic things, and quickly too. Who needs a warrior ponderously hacking enemies to pieces one by one when you could just have an archmage destroy them all at once with a wave of his/her hand? And mages would make great interrogators/infiltrators, with command, calm, charm and chameleon spells. In many situations I think some subtle magic is better than a sword.

The thing is though, what happens when the other side has their own great mage as well as a large army and all you have is this little piss ant throwing spells around? (obviously an exaggeration, but one mage can't stop an army when theres another mage casting counter spells on the otherside, no matter how powerful they are)

Having great warriors to augment your armies as well as great mages allows you to become a force that can't be stopped by anything other then an opposite but equal force.

Great mages. Not only do they possess great power, but they posses the intelligence to asses changing situations and act in the most appropriate manner to end the situation as quickly as possible.

Great warriors just smash whatever happens to be in front of them, which can cause more problems sometimes
