It's a film that goes against the standard formulae and ended up being not quite what I expected but nevertheless was a brilliant film in it's own right.
To get things started Akira Kurosawa is to the Samurai film genre what Sergio Leone is to the Spagetti Western.
"The Seven Samurai", "Ran", "Kagemushi", "Yojimbo", "Throne Of Blood" (and there are more is not only recommended but considered 'Required Reading").
