The Green Pact

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:40 pm

Is it just me, or is every single Bosmer in Morrowind and Oblivion ignoring them? I wanted to ask you how my Bosmer char can possibly eat the dozens of people he kills every day, but then I realised that loads of Bosmer have fruit and vegetables in their houses and aren't following the Green Pact either. Are the Bosmer outside of Valenwood lax in their believes or was it just not important enough to put in?

Suddenly, I have an idea for a mod. If you're a Wood Elf and you eat any vegetable or fruit, you gain one Infamy and lose some reputation among other Bosmer. Sadly, I don't think that would be possible.

Perhaps you could even make it so that if you're a Bosmer, NPCs will drop Human Skin and Human Hearts, with new edibles made for the elves and beasts...again, though, it's probably just a pipe dream.

The Green Pact is only for things growing within Valenwood. The Bosmer can still import whatever they want, even wood to build with. Read http://www.imperial-library.info/mwbooks/danceinfire.shtml. :)

But they still can't eat it, right? The books states they import wood and such for buildings and weapons but everything they eat is still meat.

The old PGE exaggerate things. They are not "exclusively carnivore", however they are not allowed to cut, pluck, cut, harvest or otherwise gather vegetals (including timber for building things and fruits and vegetables for eating).

However, if somebody else already did it, then it's fair game. If a Bosmer needs a tree cut, he'll hire an Imperial to do so.

Now keep in mind that the Bosmer you meet in Cyrodiil or Morrowind are expatriates who may have left their home country because they did not share orthodox religious views.

If it was grown outside of valenwood, then its fair game.

Yeah, I think it's OK for the Bosmer to eat plant-based food as long as it's not grown in their forest. However most Bosmer perfer to eat meat.

I once made a story for a Bosmer character in Oblivion, he was a powerful warlock who was not afraid to use the plants in valvenwood for his powerful potions and spells. When his countrymen found out he was banished from his home and moved to Cyrodill.

Well, there is Cannibals of Morrowind. Pretty much exactly as you described. Dunno about Oblivion though.

I'd question whether a really devout Bosmer would really hire someone to cut trees down. Maybe some would, but I reckon others would consider it conspiracy to murder or something.

I dont quite think it works like that, either. That would be a pretty grave loophole exploit.

I just think the Green Pact is restricte dto valenwood Forrest, and hence for all purpsoes doesnt apply to Bosmer in Morrowind and Cyrodiil.
And of course, in Morrowind, House Telvanni seems to be made 90% made up of Bosmer on the lower ranks anyways, and at least for those I indeed dont think religious orthodoxy is a great concern...

I guess I'll just play him as a follower of the Nine Divines with a bit more respect for plants due to his upbringing. Being a bit more hesitant to harvest ingredients and always leaving at least 1 sample on the plant, that kind of thing.

Thank you all :).

The "A Dance in Fire" series is about a Cyrodil public contractor hired just to do that, cut trees to make roads in Valenwood, and he is hired by the Bosmer themselves. The loophole exists.

Now you can argue that it's fiction even in-game, but the entire premise of the plot wouldn't be something absurd.

It's funny they have a racial propensity for marksmanship when most bows are made from wood. I suppose it makes sense if they use bone or metal ranged weapons though.

Feathers, insect exoskeletons, leather hardened with resin or animal glue, conceivably even types of paper made from composting leaf litter...

don't forget fiberglass!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiberglass#Uses. Though I somehow doubt this technology exists on Nirn. Oh, well, let's just say it is magic.

Compound bows from Horn - the Mongols did not have trees to make their bows from, but they had the most devastating ranged cavalry.

Does it occur that there may be various opinions on the Green Pact within Valenwood as well as outside it?

Also I seem to remember there was a rebellion against the Green Pact.

You mean, really exaggerates things. :P Anything that makes Cyrodiil look better and the peoples of the other provinces look like savages.

i always thought the green pact was the devs poking fun at vegetarians.

i think the pact applies everywhere, but as mentioned, it doesn't restrict use if another offers.

"Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it".

The whole pocket guide seems to be written to keep citizens from wanting to visit other provinces.

By teaching us that people who eat only meat turn into stunted, annoying people with high pitched voices who turn into rampaging hormonal monsters occasionally? Not a very good sales pitch for meat if you ask me.

If that was it's intent it failed miserably. There are Imperials all over the place, I reckon most of them treated it as Ikea catalogue, a guide for commercial opportunities, some pacification required.
