The gray cowl of Nocturnal - an explanation of the risks
My name is Cartus Garanea. You've never heard of me and you will never hear this Name again. I am the gray fox. According to my research, I am the 117. Gray Fox. And if you read this you are also gray fox. But for our guildmates, we are both, and the 116 before me one and the same person. During the last decades there have been a wide variety of gray foxes. A female orc, a male Imperial, and for a short time there were even two gray foxes at the same time. The reason evry one thinks that onlyone gray fox which has lived for decades or even centuries exist is simple: The gray cowl of Nocturnal. This cowl get every master thief of the guild to keep the identity save. However, the cowl of Nocturnal is not just a mask likeas you can buy them. No.
This robe was created by Nocturnal herself and brought into our world. Like any other Daedric Artifact, the cowl has a special "feature". Once the mask is worn, the carrier disappears. Completely. The whole life, all the actions, everything what the person did or what else is disappearing from existence by wearing this mask. It's the perfect anonymity. That document, which you are read right now will brought from a gray fox to his replacement. So I try to tell you the consequences which may arise when you wearing the cowl of Nocturnal, based on examples of other gray foxes.
General information about the cowl
First of all: Be warned! Take up the cowl after the you have read this document. Because after the first wearing some disastrous consequences may occur! The date the cowl of Nocturnal was discovered for the first time is unknown. Just as little is known if Nocturnal has created it especially for the Thieves Guild. However, the first written record comes from a master thief of the guild. The master thief Rah'shir, the name suggests that he was a Khajiit wrote in his diary about the discover the cowl in the grave of the previous master thief. He already described first side effects of it. However, these were not as pronounced as they are today. After i wear the cowl for the first time my own wife did not recognize me and my son was not existent. Rah'Shir describes that his wife has simply forgotten his appearance, but she knows that she was married. And his children Existed continue. So it seems that the cowl over time get more and more consequences.
But which consequences are known? Once you wear the cowl your life does not exist anymore. Everything you have ever done has never happened. Thus, the resulting consequences are never occurred. If you was a farmer before joining the guild, the biggest consequences are something like that a merchant has purchased the wheat from another farmer. But there was also a monarch which was the master thief. Disappearance of such an important person can already draw more and far-reaching consequences (more to that later). Therefore i advise to possibly reconsider what you have do in your life and what could happen if you're just never existed, even if the effect hold only briefly.
Also you should forget it to make documents for your family to tell them what happens according to your "disappearance". If you write something, while you not carries the Cowl it will disappear if you put on your cap, but returns when you remove the cap. Regardless of who worn the mask, your list will disappear. Even if you have carrie the cap only one time, your life will be a part of the gray fox. Then, when someone else carrie the mask your life and your activities dissapeared. If you, however, writes something while wearing the cowl so it remains. That was the way the earlier grey foxes could document their experiences and impressions with this cowl. Also, I would ask you, if you decide you to wear the cowl to document your experiences to your successor to ensure an easier entry for the future generations of grey foxes.
Now I would like you describe some examples of previous gray foxes, based on her diaries to identify potential risks.
The double-house
The master thief Anaren, a Altmeri architect joined the Guild and become within a decade the master thief and got the gray cowl. Anaren built before his entry into the guild a house in the port district of the Imperial City. After he used the cowl this house was not only disappeared it was replaced by a house from a different architect. At this time the crowl was not so "fast" in terms of side effects. The side effects come, but with a slight delay. So it happened that, as Anaren dressed the cowl and later took it off that were two houses in the same place. What exactly happened then is not described. The port Guard has described it as an "accident from Mages Guild". Before this accident the port was described as a green paradise for lords and ladys around the world.
The new law
This example takes a little longer and also had further consequences.
The master thief Athyn Dorethi was prior to his admission into the guild a member of the twin torch, a grouping for the abolition of slavery in Morrowind. He was on the island of Vvardenfell a highly respected nobleman from the House Hlaalu why it he experienced a storm of anger as Athyn wanted to marry a slave. Because of its close relations with the Empire he goes to the Imperial City in order for an extension of slavery laws to plead. He wanted that marriage between a free and a slave is legalized, so the slave could be free. During his visit to the imperial city of purse has been stolen by a thief. His Dunmer pride led him to the thief to hunt and even to catch.
He was never really the way you would imagine a dunmer-noble. He was close to nature, was against slavery and even served briefly as a soldier. The thief who was caught by Athyn in the port district resisted and grabbed a knife. Athyn defended himself and try to push the hand of the thief away. Suddenly, the arm of the thief slipped on wet floor and Athyn rammed the knife, surprised in the throat. Athyn did not want to kill him. He was generally not very welcome in the imperial city. A Dunmer comes to flex about its relations because an imperial law? That was not welcome.
While Athyn tried to stop the bleeding at the neck, the thief lost his gray mask. He took the cowl to stop the bleeding effectively, but this did not work and the thief did not move again soon. Shocked recognized Athyn more thieves who just came over, and he had to return to the Elven Garden District. There were guards who could help him. But the thieves stood between him and his goal. He ran in the other direction, hide behind a small hut. He looked around the corner and saw how the thieves gathered around the corpse. Now recognized Athyn that there were only three thieves. They did not seem to know the corpse.
When Athyn a little leaning against the house broke a part of the timber wall with a loud crash. The thieves heard the crash and noticed Athyn, although he quickly leaned back behind the house. Even when the thieves would not have mattered so would be a Dunmer, who own jewelery made of gold here is an easy prey. Athyn take a robe to hide the jewelry. In the stress because he had nowhe completly forgot to take the cowl off. then he turned to wear the Brown Innerlining his robe to the left. This was "ordinary" as the turquoise robe with golden ornaments.
When Athyn behind the house came out the thieves surrounded him immediately. They spoke to him with "Master". He tought there was a rule that says "Who killed the master thief, will become the next". They told Athyn that a poor man was killed and did not even seem to remember that he could have been there. Short after the thieves wanted to go again Athyn noticed something. The mask seemed to fit his head size perfectly. It looked like a crushing of the skull. Panicked, he threw the robe to the ground.
Thereupon, the thieves turned around again, one of them stepped on the cowl. Behind Athyn came a guard during the patrol and the thieves ran away. Athyn grabbed the robe and ran away too. During the race he put the robe on again, shortly after he was pulled behind another house. There, the two thieves were back but with a few more man. They told Athyn of their plan to conquer the port quarter. The thieves seems much more organized as before. Before Athyn could say anything the thieves going. Athyn saw his chance and slipped them secretly to come finally to the White Gold Tower.
It seemed a lot of guards to be there to defend the port quarter. On the way to the city center Athyn met not a guard, except for the guards of the palace. Without a control they let him and a guard guided him. However, not to Morrowind governor but directly to the emperor Uriel Septim. It was relatively quiet. He asked Athyn what the Guild wants. If they wanted to take the city. Than athyn notcied that he wa sstill wearing the cowl. He had to play. He was, after all, the Emperor. Now Athyn`s dunmeric proudly showed up. He played the role of the thief perfect. He called for the legalization of slave marriage. Uriel Septimturns aoruns, "A woman so." Athyn grinned. "Quite a lot of effort for a woman" Athyn came now so far. He had to maintain the camouflage. "And the port quarter," said Athyn.
Uriel was staring at him. "We are poor. And we have to pay taxes! Take off the taxes for us and I swear there will be no more brutality!" The Emperor did not seem to believe him. Since Athyn stepped forward, "I swear to you! The Thieves Guild will never kill again innocent! I'll tell them. Within the next years we will be a guild of thieves known to be honorable" Uriel nodded and let Athyn goes. Arrived in the harbor district Athyn wanted to go to his ship to write everything here in book form. No one would belive him. But there where his ship was now a gaping void. He spoked to a dockworker. He laughed at this and said, "You can not leave here Grey Fox! The guild needs you." Since then Athyn all became clear. Now he recognized that the cowl he wearschanged is personality... he was the new guild master.
Here ends the diary of Athyn. The last part seems to have been a victim of the flames. Once you are wearing the robe you will known it: If the cowl is supported marrying slaves from Morrowind legitimate.Take it off, it is illegal. It is at the moment also illegal is it?
The county Sutch
Now comes the greatest example of the effect of the cowl. The history of Sutch.
North-west of Kvatch is the fortress Sutch. But that was not all time a fortress. At the beginning of the third era it was planned to build both a fortress and the city called Sutch build. However, during the planning the money ran out . The then General Legion "Tiberius Sutch" should govern both the fort and the city. Actually, should his father both governance but he was in Hammerfell for Political talks. Therefore, he should decide what should be built. Tiberius chose the city of Sutch. It took more than 40 years until it grew into a sizeable town. Tiberius father had already died and so Tiberius ruled the city now. It was not long until the thieves' guild settled there. But Tiberius was not angry about it, he concluded with the guild even from many shops and befriended with the gray fox.
When the thieves' guild was almost completely arrested by an imperial spy within the guild, and the gray fox was anyone from the guild dare more, he decided to go out of business and he did something else only once happened: He gaves the cowl of Nocturnal the count. Tiberius saw it as only advantages: The guild and the city would be ruled by him! So the business would go so much faster. So he went to the second hiding the guild and put the robe on. But now somethingincredible happend. The town disappeared and was replaced by a mediocre military fortress. This was already in horrible condition and was abandoned. No wonder it was already peace in the country and so unimportant items like here, between two cities were no longer necessary. Tiberius then traveled to the Imperial City, where he worked as the new gray fox. What happened to him has not been elucidated. We only know that he passed on the robe after a further 15 years.
This are some examples for the curse of the Cowl. Think about what you have done in your life and what will happend when you are never exists. If you decide to wear the cowl it well be a honor for me to welcoming you as the grey fox.
