The Havok System

I just hope this and all the other new tech in Skyrim won't make mid-tier PC's cringe :geek:

I have not yet seen any good movies of animations in action.
If some one have any links please post them.

What I want to see is character animations interacting with the world space.
Thinks like walking on stairs, against slopes, jumping over obstacles and stuff like that.

http://www.havok.com/index.php?page=showcasecheck out the retargetting character video, there are no objects but there is jumping and tumbling and whatnots.

Edit - correction they aren't jumping over any objects but they are interacting.

What about this one?

There is another vid that shows the wind effect on the cloth.

We know that weather will be dynamicaly applyed in Skyrim. So, cloth would be awesome interacting with wind and movements in the game!

Damn, i just can′t work... i spend like 4 hours today in this forum and searching about havok....

It′s hard to wait =(

There are people worried about the use of Havok Behaviour? The animation blending in their demo alone makes me pretty hopeful for Skyrim's animations (even a basic implementation of it could eliminate the "strafing" diagonal run problems of previous games, among other things). And their lead combat animator is a real fighter, which might be significant.

Anyway, the Havok system looks good in theory. Can't wait to see a gameplay video.

Havok Behavior? I hope that we can expect first-person animations to be realistic as this (but not so gory):
(Warning explicit)

Don't like neither of these games, but healing and movement animations looks awesome. Looking forward to see Havok in action...

I hope the fact that they are using Havok Behaviour means they are also using Havok Cloth. It's about frikkin' time for realistic physics to become a standart in game industry, not an occasional eye-candy for the owners of Geforce cards.

Yes, that's the word. But, imagine first-person animations of this quality in melee combat.. Really looking forward to see this Havok Behavior..

as for the second video I'd say that'd be quite a long "jump" from oblivion. I won't completely write it off as them not having it, but I find it unlikely.

Watch that video and imagine: enemies, or even the own player removing an arrow from them chest like Far Cry... Amazing is the word that would describe that!

A mace or hammer could broke the player′s arm for example, and we would enjoy that gory animation... It would be very welcome in a Harcore mode!

Most probably, but improved walking/running and jumping animations would be a great detail.

If they used havok Cloth in Skyrim I would literally jump up and down in joy.

Sadly, it looks as if they for some reason chose not too. As there are no flags visible in the screens blowing in the wind, no hair flowing, and the clothing looks to be just as static as Morrowind and Oblivion.

If it was in, it would be in the screens, the game goes gold in 10 or less months and if you have physics like those in game, you want to show them off in screens.

HUGE missed opportunity Bethesda.... but the rest of what they are using sounds great and definitely better than Oblivion so I guess I shouldn't complain.

There would be no point in trying to show that stuff off with cursory screen shots when game play video is just around the corner.

Fair enough, I still don't see it being in the game, although looking at the screens again it seems like they COULD be in, albeit not as flashy as the tech demos, but the pieces of armor in the screens seem like they may have some "give" especially the screen of the Dragonborn in the snow watching the dragon fly. It appears the piece of hanging cloth from the back of his armor between his legs is swaying/blowing to the right.

I guess we will have to wait and see, I am hoping for yes, but my brain is telling me no.

Going by the article I'm guessing they wont have any motion captured animations at all.

Behaviour is just what's being used for animation blending. And honestly, ANY animation blending is better than Oblivion's no animation blending. The Havok engine won't magically make the animations awesome if their animators are shoveling garbage animations as fast as they can. Havok is just the tool, we really need to have our fingers crossed for quality animators at Bethesda.

They've had motion capture in some facility since Fallout 3 (maybe earlier?). I would assume the only reason those animations still weren't great was because of no animation blending.

Until you start seeing people stretch and go flying of of nowhere and all those crazy bugs.Ideas on paper is completely different than in when you actually use them in reality.

That's what constraints are for! :)

I was pretty excited seeing this. Appears to be Havok's answer to Euphoria and then a step beyond that. I hope the actual physics engine has been upgraded too. I'd like to see some Havok FX used on the PC version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x0S0b_eG_M

Not really. It's actually more like Morpheme, and which one is better is probably preference. Behavior/Morpheme deal essentially with scripted animations. Euphoria uses an AI with things like problem solving and inverse kinematics to figure out how to move on its own.

Edit: Also, I'm not saying Euphoria is superior... Having an AI figure out human/creature motion can make them appear childish or dumb. AIs aren't very smart after all.

Euphoria is still very young technology, so games with Euphoria still have to rely on pre-made animations. Eventually Euphoria will evolve into something that will replace animation altogether.

I do hope people realize that nearly everything in that Far Cry 2 video is the worst possible thing you can do to yourself with those injuries.
