The Houses Poll

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 12:42 am

I think having multiple houses for sale in each city/town/village would be a good idea.

Representing a class spectrum:

  • Lower-end houses like shacks and hovels for the poorer player.

  • Middle-class homes for more wealthy adventurers.

  • Large stately homes with perhaps an estate of land surrounding them for the super-rich.

Also, an interesting idea would be to have unique homes that cannot be bought but must be either earned through certain quests or awarded as a sort of rank bonus for reaching the top of a faction, say.

I really think the home is an important aspect of the game. You use it as a base-of-operations, a sort of headquarters for you to return to after a day of adventuring and can reflect upon the days events, organise quests, plan for the next day, etc.

What are your ideas?

I quite frankly love the idea. See, in Fallout, we get whats given, i heard TES is better in "classmanship". See, if i could play as a poor member of society, i shouldn't get a mansion. Or if im rich as hell, i get a shack. I would like to see you being able to totally customize your house up to walls.

I agree.

In Oblivion, I really hated the fact that if I wanted to live in the Imperial City, I had to buy the crappy hovel on the waterfront.

I like the idea of having multiple houses to choose from in any given town, but I don't want to spend too much time decorating my house. I rather have a preset house.

I think it would be really cool if they had this special mode where you can decorate your house instead of grabbing things and awkwardly placing them.

I'd like more city options, like townhouses and apartments.

A big thumb up for your post OP.

Definitely, that's something I strongly hope to see in the game.

It would be damn annoying playing a high-class style character to find out the only available house in the city you like best is a shack or vice versa, castle for a low-class like character.

Different class houses is the way to go.

I really think the home is an important aspect of the game. You use it as a base-of-operations, a sort of headquarters for you to return to after a day of adventuring and can reflect upon the days events, organise quests, plan for the next day, etc.

My thoughts exactly, nothing to add.

At first I was thinking one per town is enough, but then I remembered how the only house you can buy in the Imperial City is the waterfront shack. I like the idea of having a house!

Any amount of houses is fine. What I want to see is houses with easy to use hangings and statutes for your lute.

Agree with most, but I think you should be able to choose a pre-set house interior and customize. If we have both those who don't like to do don't have too, and if you do like it you can.

I think that there should usually be at least one or two in every city, and sometimes a town will have an empty one. But more importantly, it should be possible to convince almost any NPC to sell their house to you, or to curse the house and watch them become terrified and leave, kill them without anyone finding out and buy it from the local count or whatever. Once you "own" a house, it should be possible to buy and position any furniture you wish for it. I mean, this has been in games for years, TES should get with the program.

Most of these ideas are interesting. Collectively, we have some pretty lofty ideas for in-game housing, lol.

I hope some of these thoughts make it into the game.

For houses, that functioning stove concept intrigues me, as does campfire cooking, with a tent, etc.

TES has done several things, with respect to housing in past games.

I must say that I am rather curious to see what they come up with for Skyrim.

As long as it doesnt turn into the sims Id be rather fine with it. Moving furniture would be nice but it wouldnt be the end of the world if you couldnt. Atleast I managed to make my houses rather nice in both obliv and morrowind ^^.

I'd like a few more housing options, but not sure if it's worth the development time to have multiple houses available in every town. Perhaps two or three for sale in a couple of places, and only one in others. If you want a mansion in a particular place, it could be "Sorry, there isn't anyplace like that for sale here, but I hear that **** is trying to find a buyer for a really lavish place in ****."

Customization is fine to a degree, but trying to allow for both "package deals" and "seperates" would cause inevitable conflicts if not handled carefully. It probably has to be one or the other. I'd like to see basic wall and floor decor with cabinets and closets as a "package deal", perhaps with a couple of "major" furniture items that would be enough for someone who just wants to click and be done with it, and then have the option to place additional "minor" furniture manually. The major pieces would need to always be in the same places regardless of your package selection (or none), so the manaully placeable items wouldn't be able to conflict.

I like all of the idea's except for the house building. To me, that just doesn't represent TES series.

I really like the idea of "class related houses". This would fit in very well to the defining your character aspect of the game. Will your character be a member of the elite or will they be a poor leech on society that lives in a "crab-shack"? I would definitely agree to this being in.

I also agree that there needs to be more options. :hubbahubba:

I myself would love to actually make the ENTIRE building myself and build all the furniture etc.
I could just see myself finding a random epic place on the map, cut some trees, and make my epic house...

I think these are fantastic ideas!

Multiple houses in each city representing a spectrum of classes sounds great. As does getting houses as rewards for completing certain quests or reaching the top of factions/guilds, just like the White Stallion Lodge you received after becoming a Knight of the White Stallion in OB. The home should match the position though, like the Fighters Guild home should contain larger/heavier weapons/shields/armour and ammo, health potions, various sparring apparatus, a smithy to forge your weapons, and maybe even a small sparring pit where you can challenge Fighters Guild members to a duel for money or experience. Maybe you could hire those same FG members on as extra muscle to help you on quests. Mages Guild home should have things like spell-making and enchanting stations, common (or lower) soul gems, some basic robes, staves and spell scrolls, mana potions and it would be cool to have a summoning pit that will summon various levels of monsters for you to practice offensive/defensive spells with. Thieves Guild home can have things similar to the Fighters Guild home but slightly different, like smaller/lighter weapons/armour/shields along with ammo for bows and such, some lockpicks, can still have the weapons forge, but instead of a sparring pit, maybe you can have a permanent Fence that resides in your Thieves Guild home so you can sell your loot. Be cool to be able to hire a thief to go out and steal something overnight and bring it back to your fence, and then you get a percentage of the cut.

Every home you purchase should be customizable in some way. I'd like to see homes get robbed, but I'd like to be able to put locks on chests, from basic to advanced and have a personal skeleton key that opens all locks on chests I own. The chests should just automatically lock themselves again after closing them (if they have a lock installed). This way I can store important, high-level, expensive or enchanted items for example in the locked chests, and store stuff like food and whatnot in cupboards and on shelves so if someone did manage to break in and steal some things, they'd probably go for the stuff that's out in the open first. I'd like to be able to set traps (physical and magical) on chests (locked or not). The skeleton key should be able to by-pass any traps. The same lock/trap/skeleton key system should be able to be applied to the doors, both the main door into the home and the internal doors. It would be really cool to be able to set a bear trap or something similar where if the burglar sets off the trap he gets caught and when you go back to that specific home, he's stuck in the trap and you have to decide whether to set him loose, turn him in to the local guard, or kill him.

I also like the idea of renting out homes, but I think they should be separate from homes you occupy. There should be homes you can specifically buy that are to rent out only, kind of like investing in a business in OB. The garden idea sounds good too as does the stove and mailbox feature. And yes, if you're in a home that you own, an NPC who is friendly with you should randomly come knock at your door for a chat or tea.

I'd even like to choose a plot of land out in the woods and setup a small cabin, but I doubt that's plausible. In fact, we're really getting in depth here with housing so I doubt most of this will happen, but it's fun to come up with ideas.

I really like this post and all the suggestions put forward. Well done OP!

The one thing i would like to see on this toipic would be a better way of placing your items out for display. For example: Weapon racks and manakins for hanging up your armor and weapons. Also, i hope that they make it so you can pick up candles and lanterns again like in morrowind. I remember i used to love changing the lighting around in my houses. I would go around the cities looking for different types of candles and light sources. I spent hours doing that kind of stuff.!!

I voted for one per town but also for the upgradable option. Buy the shack and upgrade it either at the time of purchase or later in the game when your fortunes have improved. There was nothing wrong with that shack that an army of builders, landscapers, and decorators couldn't take care of. ;-) If that's what the player chooses. You should have the option of living in a shack, if that suits your RP, no matter how wealthy you are.

I would like to be able to build a house and have an interactive stove and garden.
Building the house could go very well with the new woodcutting activity :)

It would be great to have a garden with the ability to plant crops which could then be sold to merchants etc.. Not too interested in building my own houses though if i'm honest.

I completely and 100% agree with you! I liked being able to buy the nicest house in Oblivion, except that I hated living in Skingrad because I would have preferred being more in the middle (Imperial City), so as to be of equal distance to everything else... But the house in the Imperial City was a dirty little shack on the Waterfront--great, if you don't have a lot of money, or don't care what it looks like (you only care to have a place where you can stash things...), but when I've been playing for awhile and have earned a considerable amount of wealth, I'd like to be able to buy a house that is suitable to my current level of wealth. Here's my idea:

when you first start out, there are lower level homes available; but as you level up and earn more money, better houses become available in every town/city. Then you can own as many homes in as many locations as you want, and if you want to save up for the best houses money can buy, you can still live in whatever town you like best... Something like that, anyway... :D
