The HUDless Wasteland

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:56 pm

For Christmas I received a Sharp Aquos, and, naturally, FO3 was one of the first titles that I took for a spin. It was beautiful, of course, but it wasn't until I got rid of my Crosshair and HUD that my mind was truly blown. It's amazing. I don't even mind Firefights without the crosshairs; it's not that hard to aim without it, and it's much more Immersive. I can navigate just fine with my map alone, and I can check out my health after every fight in the stats screen (I just spam my stims-hotkey if I hear a heartbeat. Sue me).

Anyone else prefer playing like this?

I hear you, thats why I like new vegas though cause I can aim down my sights. Its kinda hare to play hudless in fo3 when all i do when I aim is zoom in, and still cant tell exactly where Im shooting.Your right it does make the game feel a little more "real".

Going HUDlrss is very big for immersion, it took everything out of the way and really added to the beauty and reality of the game. However I regret to admit that it was too hard for me to keep without the "(action) (object)" anymore so I put it back on. I might give it another try though.

Agreed. Having no HUD, makes the game that much more immersive. Also, as a veteran playing this game, it has breathed new life, as now, I have to be much more cautious, and I'm jumping outta my chair a lot more. Play with no music as well, to increase the "surprise" factor.

Hurray for selective viewing and selective hearing. (:
Even with the hud on, I can play the game and act 100$ like the hud isn't even there. So subconsciously, I see them, consciously however, I don't. :)

It is cool, especially if you turn off written dialouge. I have trouble aiming though....

You can take off the hud?thats awsome.I like games without heads up displays. Its kinda hard though not to use the crosshair since you cant line up the sights.

I hadn't thought of a HUDless FO3, I'm gonna try that, although I have a feeling it will make FO3 life more difficult...meaning more immersion.

It should be noted, that there is a small problem (depending on how u look at it) with no HUD on the 360. You lose your crosshairs, which I'm told, you don't lose on PC. But, after some practice, you should be able to handle it.

I'm late to this party, but it sounds like HUD-less might be the thing for me. I like the idea of not needing the compass (I know the landscape anyways). I'm thinking of picking up a copy of FO3 for my new PC, since I've been playing on a 360, and no HUD might be the best way to restart this adventure. I'm not sure if I can live without my 55" screen and surround sound though.

How do you take it off? I would like to give it a try.

A good compromise, if you are on PC, is to use one of the UI mods that makes the HUD smaller. I have one and I don't even notice the HUD unless I am looking at it, but it still tells me all the information.
