The Imperial Battle College

Post » Thu Sep 23, 2010 5:10 pm

I've heard about it and seen it mentioned, but I cant really find anything about it, other than the story of battlespire. Would anyone be willing to refer me to a list of books, or tell me about it?

Or, even better, direct me to a lore-correct(ish) Oblivion Mod?

The best sources of information would be the game Battlespire and the book http://www.imperial-library.info/mwbooks/art_of_war_magic.shtml by Zurin Arctus.

In Allessia Otuss' http://www.imperial-library.info/obbooks/city_guides.shtml, she writes that there are necromancers among the ranks of the Battle College. This is clearly a biased source, though. She seems to have it in for mages in general. Just read her description of the Arcane University.

I already have read those. Thank you very much though! The only other thing I recall, I think I saw here in the Forums. It's where battle mages are trained after showing sufficent skill, right?

Basicly It is where Battlemages are trained for the Imperial Legion with help from the Mages guild. In all of Oblivion there was one permanent battlemage, stationed outside the Arcane university. I guess the battle-school is somewhere in the Jungle.

You mean the one the Divine Talos God-conned? Or did I miss something?

There's actually quite a sizable http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Category:Oblivion-Battlemage of people in Cyrodill who were trained as Battlemages at the time of the Oblivion Crisis.

Of course, I doubt very many of them were from the Battlespire, as they were alive and too young to have been trained there. I believe Ocato and Dagail are old enough to have been graduates, but very few of the others would have been advlts at the time.

It's likely that the Legion found a new place to train Battlemages after the Battlespire went down, and that some of the people classed as Battlemages didn't receive any official training for the Legions, since some of them are mercenaries and criminals.

I suppose that leaves me with quite a bit of flexability if I wanted to write a Imp. Battle College Mod then? Thanks for the info and the help!

"College" is like "Church" in referring to the collection of people, rather than the building where they meet, although both terms are used for the latter as well. So the Imperial Battle College can be anywhere that group decides to congregate, without the Battlespire. The work of the college doesn't have to be at a single location either, a diaspora could work as well if communication between the members is adequate, (or they use Fast Travel all the time :P ). A possible mod might have the player help search for a permanent location for the new Battlespire?

Maybe. Right now I'm just fishing for info and maybe a story will devise itself in my head. I need a lot of practice with the CS before I can really realize the mod.

Anyhow, from this point onward, I'd like this topic to be used only for lore harvesting in relation to the IBC.

My advice would be to have it somewhere isolated. If not deep in the mountains, then in the desert somewhere, or even on some sort of magical mountain floating high in the sky.

The reason is that the Battlespire seemed to indicate the Battlemage training was a private, isolated affair, and one of the reasons might be that the mastery of destruction magic causes damage to the landscape and environment. Imagine training an entire legion of battlemages to cast powerful fireball spells. You can't do that type of training in the forest. You'd make Smokey the Bear cry. You'd want an isolated training grounds for that. It's sort of like the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in DBZ. Powerful warriors go to an isolated, alternate dimension to become stronger and more proficient.

Now those are some fond memories. That is a very good point. I really like the floating mountain Idea too.
