The Infernal City: An Elder Scrolls Novel; Thread #1

Good call, also IF Shivering Isles is canon it can very well be that Umbra simply didn't feel like the new "mad god" wasnt a fitting wielder anymore. Or Vile simply took it from you while you where in Sheogoraths Oblivion realm.

Either way, there is precedent that the sword has some backdoor, or front door, in order to return to Clavicus Vile, and it does end up biting him in the [censored] as we found out.

svcks to be CV right now.

I wonder how the other princes view the current deal with Umbriel. CV probably hates it right about now. Azura doesn't seem to like it, but has no problem screwing over Sul, that greedy, [censored]y [censored].

No spelling error is minor when you do it three times with a proper noun and make it into a new word in the process. Heh, maybe we can just apply BATW to the entire book if we had to. :biglaugh:

The use of leet speak is difficult to understand for many, and should not be used. In addition, please do not take it upon yourself to be a spelling and grammar cop. With the number of non-English speaking members here, it is to be expected errors will occur. It is fine to be helpful, just please don't be spiteful.

So he used Umbra? But I never gave him Umbra. It's still sitting in my inventory, at 0 weight.

In your present time game. This book and future games take place far into the future of your current game. What will happen to your beloved Umbra once your character dies, which is sure to be long before this book or the next game takes place. Does your character have a will?

Maybe, maybe not. They didn't live at Vvardenfall, so it's not like they were directly nuked. When things turned sour, they could have fled to Cyrodiil.

The way things worked in Arena was that there was a set time or number of uses you could have with the item, and the legend was that items would leave you when you need them most.

I don't think that Bethesda really cares if you finished the quest or not...

Maybe not. People say that The Infernal City is set forty years after the Oblivion Crisis. If that's true, then it has been forty-six years since the events of Morrowind. They could have moved away by then. Well, I don't know if King Helseth would have moved away, he's probably dead... Barenziah might still be alive.

No one else finds it interesting we have been given glimpse of what it is like to be in Hiricine's actual realm? I also feel bad about what happened to the khajiit there.

Also, whose realm do you think they visited when they were traveling? The first seemed to have been Mehrunes Dagon's realm. Then it was:
1) utter darkness but not silence, for all around them were chittering sounds and staccato scurrying of hundreds of feet. I can only guess Namaria's realm, due to the darkness and what I can assume to be bugs
2) An infinite palace of colored glass. Guessing Meridia's realm.
3) An icy plane with a burning sky. Sounds like Molag Bal's realm, if I am correct
4) A dark red river, and the smell of blood was nearly suffocating. I have no clue...Anyone have an idea?

1) The Deadlands sure engough as Sul reached them through an Oblivion Gate (Mehrunes Dagon
3) Yes, this should be Coldharbour (Molag Bal)

5) Obviously Hircine's realm
6) Yellow flowers that smell like skunk, twisting trees with mushroom caps, ... --> Shivering Isles (Sheogorath)
7) A jagges island in a furious sea beneath a sky half-filled with a jade moon?

We know that they weren't in Moonshadow (Azura) as Sul said that he used a shortcut around that with the Oblivion Gate. Also Hermaeus has a gigantic library and Malacath has a grey flat with foggy creatures. Both realms seem not to be under the visited.

I don't think so. Vaermiras domain, Quagmire, is an ever changing nightmare.

What I don't understand is, why the didn't jump from the Shivering Isels to Vivec. Baar Dau was sent from Sheogorath so there should be a portal to Vivec.

I'm .... sorry? You're invoking the grammarnazi rules because I don't like the way a writer, who is not a member of the forums, has changed the spelling and pronunciation of a major ingame location?

Well, first of all...I made a mistake and did not realize you were speaking of the writer. However, if his grammar is of major concern...blame the editor. I don't think I have ever read a book that I didn't find a spelling or grammar error. So, go ahead and discuss grammar as it pertains to the book if you like.

And in that case, I think you are nitpicking. ;)

Oh, fair enough, sorry.

This is what I want to know. Is it a lore change, or is it just a typo (thrice is unlikely) or did Keyes really think it was spelled like that?

Or a case where different folks from different places have named it differently or call it differently? Like....Everyone in the world calling Mt. McKinley, Mt. McKinley and locals calling it Denali which is spelled a bit differently dependent upon what tribe you come from.

Only that example helps how? Soulstheim/Solstheim

Its a minor quip and good for a one-time chuckle, I'm not angry with the name change. yeah...

I think 1) was Peryite's realm, and 4) was Dagon's. Rivers of red drink is sort of his thing.

Solstheim sounds almost like Soulstheim. Maybe it was an error (but if so it was the only one I caught) or maybe they changed the name.

Okay, they jumped through 7 realms, but 4 and 7 are proving to be thorns on our sides. Time to narrow things down:
Azura: Can't, because none of the realms fit the description "Flowers, waterfalls, majestic trees, and a city of silver decorate the realm, but it is all a blur. The colors run like water. It's damp from the rainy weather while the wind smells like perfume."

Boethiah: Unlikely, because his/her realm looks like "maze gardens and twisted towers."

Clavicus Vile: Definitely not likely, his place is pretty much like an idyllic countryside.

Hermeaus Mora: Unlikely, his realm is an endless library.

Hircine: They visted this place, so we can cross him off.

Malacath: Unlikely, because his realm is pretty much just ash.

Mehrunes Dagon: First realm they entered

Mephala: No idea what her realm even looks like, so it could be 4 or 7

Meridia: Was identified as the place with an infinite colored windows; she's off the list

Molag Bal: Was visited and identified, so he can also be crossed off

Namira: Was visited and identified, so she can be crossed off

Nocturnal: Doubt it. We saw parts of it in Battlespire, and I'd imagine it to be pretty much a black and endless void

Peryite: His realm hasn't been described, and since he's a more destructive daedra, there's a possibility

Sanguine: I'd have a feeling his realm would resemble something like Slaanesh's from WH. Basically, a giant hedonistic hell hole of aesthetics and an unending cycle of pleasure seeking. So, I doubt his realm was visited.

Sheogorath: Visited and identified, so we can cross him off the list.

Vaernima: Her realm, as someone mentioned earlier, is an ever changing nightmare. Has potential to be one of the realms.

So, that pretty much leaves 3 possible princes for 2 realms, Peryite, Vaernima, and Melphala.

Does The Infernal City say anything about the Champion of Cyrodiil/Sheogorath or the Nerevarine? And does it say anything about Kvatch or how the other provinces were affected by the Oblivion Crisis?

Nope, only that it had its gate closed, and not each providence directly, except for Black Marsh who smashed the living hell out of Mehrunes Dagon's forces and nailed Morrowind afterwords.

Maybe some more lore will be mentioned in the second book... I am happy with the changes we've already seen in The Infernal City though.

To summarize:

I made an error some posts up. They were in 8 realms not 7.

Suls (original) route through Oblivion was:

Clavicus Vile
...
Azura (Moonshadow)
...
1) Mehrunes Dagon (Deadlands) (reentry in the book)
2) Utter darkness but not silence, for all around them were chittering sounds and staccato scurrying of hundreds of feet. --> Probably Namira (Nocturnal and Vaermira also possibly, but unlikely)
3) An infinite palace of colored glass. --> Probably Meridia
4) An icy plane with a burning sky. --> Molag Bal (Coldharbour)
5) A dark red river, and the smell of blood was nearly suffocating. --> Maybe Boethiah (charnel house), Varmira or Peryite?
6) Hircine's realm
7) Yellow flowers that smell like skunk, twisting trees with mushroom caps, ... --> Sheogorath (Shivering Isles)
8) A jagged island in a furious sea beneath a sky half-filled with a jade moon. --> Maybe Nocturnal or Peryite?

That makes at least 10 visited Oblivion planes for 16 Daedra Lords.

I'm thinking the river of blood could very well have been part of Sanguine's realm, seeing as Sanguine MEANS blood.
