On the Isle of Roscrea

Post » Sun Jun 09, 2013 8:47 am

After finally getting round to picking up a PC copy of Skyrim this past week, it is my intent to jump into the modding aspect and as someone who pretty much only exclusively uses lore friendly mods, that's the kind of road I will be going down (as time allows).

One of the ideas that I am contemplating at the moment, as the thread title might suggest, is the Isle of Roscrea. I find myself with a bit of a dilemma, however. The only thing I know about Roscrea is the date it was annexed by Uriel V, it's [rough] location and that it had been annexed in the twilight of the Third Era by Solitude (this being what piqued my interest initially). Despite searching in a few places, I haven't been able to turn up any additional information on the place.

Is there any other lore tidbits associated with Roscrea?

Has anyone attempted to tackle what the place and people might be like?

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. :tops:

Seems to be a blank page in the lore. What do you have planned for it? Considering that the island wasn't conquered until the mid-third era, I would bet that Cyrodiilic cultural imperialism would have far less of a foothold than in Skyrim proper. I could see them conserving more of the original Atmoran culture, with some sort of offshoot of the animal totem religion. Also, I can't imagine agriculture is possible north of Skyrim...I wouldn't be surprised if they were more of a fishing/hunting based economy with shades of Inuit in their Norse, like the Skaal.

Actually, an interesting route to take could be to make them a cultural half-waypoint between the Skaal and the Nords of Skyrim, representing a point just before the Dragon Cult split into the old Nord pantheon and Skaal worship of the All-Maker. Reconciling those three religions would be a fun endeavor.

Well it was owned by Solitude and was a former Imperial territory. apart from that there isnt much known. I think it would be North-North-East of Solitude, even icier than northern Skyrim, with a small broken down fort on it... Likely in the http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111119190321/elderscrolls/images/4/44/Skyrim_Solitude_Lighthouse.jpg. I couldn't imagine it still being owned by Solitude, but rather more like a semi-independen fishing/pirating settlement that was largely forgotten and neglected.

EDIT: I like what Toesock said more. Old Nordic beliefs, with an dash of Inuit.

Sounds like a really great idea for a mod.

Do we actually know if it is east or west of Skyrim? I am guessing it must be somewhere along the northern coastline of Tamriel. We know Nords also went west and built settlements along the coastline if High Rock as even Daggerfall was originally a Nord settlement.

Roscrea's one of the Islands between Tamriel and Akavir, but on further investigation I find myself somewhat confused as to where it is located in actuality. I've found these http://nirn.wdfiles.com/local--files/maps/nirn_edz.jpg and http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/284/a/a/nirn_by_wiiwillrockyoup-d5hj0we.png (fair warning, both images are fairly large). I'm not entirely sure what the reasoning for the placement of the related Isles are for the respective artists other than Uriel V's fleet sailing from the Niben Bay and working for there. The placement in any event seems somewhat dubious to me anyway, as most other maps I've seen that go as far south as Pyandonea make no mention of the isles there (examples: http://static.skyrim.nexusmods.com/images/3170483-1327182302.jpg, http://www.imperial-library.info/sites/default/files/gallery_files/minibigmaproadslore31gv.jpg and the EEC shipping route http://images.uesp.net/4/46/SR-map-East_Empire_Company.jpg).

Nevermind that it would be kind of silly for the King of Solitude to sail right the way around Tamriel to take an Island south of Cyrodiil. :teehee:

I haven't really planned or come up with much in the way of anything just yet, I'm really investigating what I have to work with as far as Roscrea goes as a large project to occupy my time with. The religion (and culture) aspect is definitely the main reason why I'm floating it about as a possibility though, as I imagine that of those islands that Uriel V conquered enroute to Akavir, Imperial influences would be more present on Roscrea as an indirect result of Solitude going to annex a while later. In essence what survives of the Imperial pantheon there would be a hook back to the mainland (if that makes any sense).

I agree with this statement totally which makes me think it must be not too far away from Solitude.

Is there any official lore / in-game sources that mention any details of location. I have seen it mentioned that is is in the direction of Akavir but I've not seen the source this.

It's from http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Brief_History_of_the_Empire_v_3. If you disregard or forget that Solitude claimed Roscrea at one time, it only makes sense that it would be somewhere directly in between Tamriel and Akavir, as Akavir was clearly the ultimate goal in Uriel V's mind.

It'd probably be best for it to be somewhere northeast of Tamriel, to consolidate the two ventures. Relatively east for Uriel V's ultimate goal of Akavir (assuming that Uriel V launched ships from Skyrim to claim that particular isle, and perhaps other isles as well; it makes sense, considering Skyrim's reputation of naval prowess) and relatively north for Solitude's annexation of Roscrea and power in the Sea of Ghosts.
