The landscape of Skyrim

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:05 pm

I think that I have seen this discussed before but I dont really remember all the details. Anyway, isn't Skyrim mostly just mountain ranges and snow? That seems kinda boring to me just exploring mountains the entire time. Is that really all that Skyrim is or is there more varied landscapes?

That's my biggest fear about this game. It'll be so depressing if everything is snow, mountains, and shades of grey.

I saw someone post here a few hours ago, and said ''Don't think of Skyrim as Greenland but as Canada'' And Canada isn't all snow and mountains.

No, not at all.
Take a look at Scandinavia - do they just have snowy mountains? I suspect Skyrim to be that kind of landscape.

I think someone said in the lore somewhere at some time that there would be something like forests and beach's too, not just all snow and mountains... something... or another.

Unless the devs have spent the last 3 years on a drug induced holiday from reality, I'm fairly certain they won't drop the player in an arctic wasteland for $60.

Skyrim is mostly green, it should be about the same snowy/green ratio as Cyrodil.

I think the south-east area will be grassland/mudland like Chorrol.

If you look through some of the earlier TES5 speculation threads, you'll see that this topic was heavily covered. Skyrim is hardly just snow, though it is easy to assume that. Like suggested earlier in this thread, consider it more like Canada. Yes, there are mountains and snow, but also plains grasslands and so forth. It's a very diverse continent, so no worries, you won't just be playing an Eskimo simulator.

Solstheim was partial only ice covered and it looked good, so i expect that the thing with Skyrim will be the same. Remember Fallout 3? Wastelands are monotonous and there are not so many peevish guys who comment that detail.

If you google up the map of [insert name of elder scroll continent] or you can google up "the elder scrolls map". If you look at Skyrim, it is about 2/3rds Tamriel's size. It shows around 6 cities in there (forgot exact number of them). Don't forget about the dragon caves, ice caves, ruins, villages, and normal caves! I think in Oblivion, they should have shown Skyrim a little more greener and not-so-cold, because the farther north you go it would mostly just get colder and less habitable for people. We can live like eskimos in igloos! :goodjob:

I'm looking forward to walking through twilight pine forests with my boots crunching in the snow.

Nords are kinda like vikings, and vikings came from scandinavia. I think maybe itll be inspired by scandinavia :)
Im norwegian, and the landscape here is very various, and except for the mountains its snowy only during winter-months.

I hope so. If they make it look like Norway I'll die of happiness!

I wouldn't pin too many hopes on Skyrim having that varied a climate, at least not if gamesas is aiming for geographic realism in any sense. Remember the climate in and around Bruma in Oblivion? Well, that's near the border with Skyrim, so you can expect that to be the warmest Skyrim's climates can reasonably get.

Unless they introduce seasons, of course, but I'm not sure I should hold my breath for that.

Bruma is located at a high elevation. Climates at a lower elevation will be warmer.

Why does this come up so often. To repeat what I always say to this worry, the only people who think Skyrim is all snow are people who have no imagination and as such can't imagine that Bethesda has any imagination either.

Every province is only as interesting to look at as the developers make it. Vvardenfell, before we went there, was described as all ashlands. ALL ashlands. But we had swamps and forests and fungi-laden islands and broad grasslands too. Cyrodiil, which many people complained about the cliche appearance of compared to Morrowind, probably had a more interesting description than Vvardenfell did...though not really any more varied. Any in-game "evidence" we've already seen is also completely meaningless. Was there a single structure in Oblivion that resembled the Imperial forts in Morrowind? Do you realize that basically all of Vvardenfell is north of Cyrodiil and was utterly snowless, yet the northern areas of Oblivion are supposed to be some kind of indicator of what to expect in the adjacent northern lands? Even Solstheim, which people for some reason refer to as proof, is further north than almost all of Skyrim and even IT isn't all snow. http://udoplaces.com/UDOPLACES/Scandinavia_files/Lake-Jostler_-Norway_-Scandinavia.png would be realistic for Skyrim. So would http://www.uwsp.edu/geo/faculty/ritter/images/biosphere/vegetation/tundra_ice_mounds_Alaska_DDS21_LMC0007.jpg. So would http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/parcs/atlas/beringia/images/img0088.jpg. So would http://www.unep-wcmc.org/habitats/freshwater/I/TundraWetland2.jpg. So would even http://wwwdelivery.superstock.com/WI/223/1436/PreviewComp/SuperStock_1436R-248537.jpg.

Exactly my thought, there will hopefully be some lower terrain that will allow for a more "green" experience.

I think the point is, even if it isn't all snowy, it'll all be cold and slightly depressing. When I say varied landscapes, I mean I want placed like snowy mountains as well as hot, humid forests.

Quite the opposite. The south is very mountainous and snowy, but the north is flatter and warmer. It has more to do with elevation than longitude. Tamriel is about dead center in the middle of Nirn, right around the equator.

It doesn't make sense to me that on the Equator of Nirn. From what I can gather about the climates of the continent, the equator on nirn would have to lie beween southern Elsweyr and the Summerset Isles.

There will be biomes, because how could there not be? Just look at Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, FO: NV, even World of Warcraft. All of them have varied terrain to some extent. Even without any prior knowledge, if someone told me an entire rpg had only one environment I would correct him.

Well I'm not that much of a [censored], but I would certainly be skeptical.

Nah, the devs wouldn't give you just mountains and snow to explore. I think Skyrim has many variable landscapes.

Now Atmora, this would have been a very cold place. :D
