Nice toy :)

Laser based weapons would work best on space environment where there is no gravity. But ballistic weapons
will remain dominant in infantry scale combat operations on ground level.

No.

Good luck shooting that M4 inside space station where there is no gravity. Recoil will be massive issue.

The way the sentence was phrased ("... would work best on space environment.."), it sounded like you were saying that gravity had some impact on the performance of lasers. Which was a bit of a head scratcher :P. But I now see what you were saying :).

I find it sad and pathetic one hacker can do this. Why the [censored] are we giving the government money for weapons research ? They sould have done this, but they got beat by a hacker. I cant wait to see it improved :)

I think it is because your government wants weapons capable of blowing up more than balloons.

The government probably already has weapons much more advanced than this but are just keeping them secret, as usual.

yeah, I think this is cool and all but probably very very inconvienent to mass produce and train soldiers to use, not to mention it looks delicate as heck. Why settle for a complicated gun that can shoot a tiny hole through plastic at point blank when you already have millions of widely used and understood assault rifles that are much more effective and easily produced? And my guess is the government already dabbled in laser or plasma weapons and found them either ineffective compared to whats out there or they are working on something much better and we just dont know

Thy have lasers designed to shoot down missiles, but they're more interested in plasma weapons than a laser that has a range of 13 inches.

This.

Just think. That new ion engine/thruster that is going on all future spacecraft? Built in 1959 by Harold R. Kaufman.

The A-12 Blackbird, with all its cool toys? First flown in 1962.

Not to mention all the cool stuff on Futureweapons that gets shown.

Of course the military has military grade laser weaponry. Maybe even plasma weaponry. Who knows what they have?

Why aren't we using them? We don't need to... yet. It's cheaper to arm a soldier with an M4. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

And firearms can work in a vacuum IF the ammo has it's own oxidizer incorporated into the powder charge mix.

Frankly, they tested on plastic and wood, but I wonder what that would do to clothing and flesh.

Looks pretty powerful, but not powerful enough to actually kill a human with one shot. If a guy survives a shot from one of those, he will probably die in cancer sooner or later.

I think the main damage will be to the eyes. If the laser's that powerful you better wear eye protection even as the wielder.

As stated, the tech's already there in the gov't hands. But your post brings up the private sector space race, gov't incentives, and politics. Much reading to be there if your google-fu is good. Not a topic for here though.
