The Last Remnants of Magic

I know that. I'm just saying that its not impossible to get a headshot.

Not impossible, but looking at the kind of guns we're talking here, the shooter would have to be either extremely skilled, or really damn lucky to pull one off at any sort of decent range.

Possible, nevertheless.

That sounds very uber my friend.

Again, the definition of Uber is something I hate seeing thrown about on these boards because of what it does. It leads to "The Greatest Swordsman in Tamriel" displaying skill slightly higher than the average high school or college student who spends much of his time behind a computer. I don't like how timid everyone on these boards are when it comes to creating a character because of the fear of "Ubering". From what I've seen, the proper "Ubering" (Which I see as synonymous with "Munchkin") rule is designed to accomplish the following:

A. At Character Creation:
1. Eliminate absurdly young characters with improbably advanced skills, like 14-year-old people with the magical power of an Archmage.
2. Eliminate inexplicably or poorly-defined skills from characters, such as characters with the line, "In addition to (expected, mostly non-combat, skill list), he's also a master swordsman."
3. Eliminate or reduce Improbable events in one's background, such as destroying an entire goblin raid without prior weapons training, inheriting a ridiculous position with no strings attached from a Convenient Relative or Friend (Uncle Ned gave him an entire ebony mine and command of half a legion of footmen! And ONE BILLION gold pieces!)
4. Anything that has no effect on a character beyond increasing the character's power level, without defining them.

B. In game:
1. Prevent the player from bypassing a conflict by bringing out a new power that shouldn't have existed prior to then.
2. Summoning mundane weapons as the player feels the plot demands.
3. having dumb luck and the forces of the universe bend over to save your character from a superior combatant.
4. Having an "unskilled" PC achieve greater combat prowess than Pelinal Whitestrake, greater magical ability than Vanus Galerion, or stealthier than Rajhin.

My khajiit character is Powerful, yes, but he's not "Uber". His mastery over his body is a defining character trait, and not out of sync with Tamriel's lore. Bruce Lee in his prime could still beat my Khajiit in a martial-arts duel, despite the khajiit's magical enhancements. Also, considering the situation, his power is also a liability and possibly a source of drama. Weak heroes make weak stories. Awesome characters make awesome stories.

Also, you really underestimate the power of the musket-ball. They are actually far more deadly than our modern day bullets, and hurt a HELL of a lot more. If your uber martial arts master was hit in the chest with one, he'd go down like a sack of bricks, and even if he didn't die right-away, he'd die a few days later from serious infection. Also, headshots aren't impossible to pull off. In the hands of a good marksman who knows the gun he's using very well, they could easily score a headshot.

Musketballs can do significant damage to an unarmored target, but just bounce off metal plating. And almost nobody can "easily" score a headshot, contrary to the easy gun-handling of FPS. I'm not sure I like how much the OP has advanced the guns... Already the age of 5-shot repeaters? That's pretty advanced... but is more fun, I guess.

Historically, in the Renaissance and early Imperial-era firearms, crossbows were superior in performance but expensive to manufacture the body and weapons for. Guns, on the other hand, were dirt cheap. Seriously, it's a simple tube that shoots whatever object fits down the barrel with a very simple explosive compound. I figure PC's would shun them, because the only way early guns were effective was in mass volleys. The longbow is the best weapon available, but using one of those is like a Martial Art, something you have to dedicate your entire life to (Use even reshapes your body!).

And again, the random variation between shots from our rifles make an intentional headshot against a moving target impossible without Gun Fu.

You already said he would be a "One man army". NO martial artist, no matter HOW skilled, is effective against more than a dozen skilled enemies at once, and by definition "One man army" means that the person could single-handedly take on a small army. It just cant be done.

By the way, my 16-year-old Soren is strong enough to stand against most other Mages, if only because he carries the tome of a former arch-mage containing all the knowledge of magic collected over a 153-year period, in addition to a large amount of magic from before that particular arch-mages time. With ten more years of proper training, he could annihilate the magic-less new empire with the help of only a small number of other magic-users.

Luckily enough, he's only sixteen, and has no idea what he could actually accomplish. I mean, the kid inadvertently summoned and made a pact with one of the greatest Daedric princes, Azura, and with the borrowed power killed 7 of the few remaining magic-users loyal to the new empire, most of them high-ranking council members(And thus exempt from the inquisition). He still has that borrowed power bottled up to be used, though he remembers little of the that night.

I always play charicters capable of ubering, but I'm smart enough not to play them that way, and enforcing my own limits on them. You are just plain WRONG about this boards no-uber rule.

Oh, now I see your point. Your character is indeed very powerful but not uber as you described (the 16 year old master-swordsman/archmage who is a Greathouse Hlaalu Duke with hundreds of warriors etc etc). Sorry for my reaction. However, you said that they "bounce off of armor plating"... Oh how wrong you are.

There were accounts of French arquebisers (or however you spell it) shooting armored riders off their horses. Later inspection showed that the bullets pierced the armor and killed the rider.

As for Longbows. Bows in general take a martial art kind of mastery if you want to use it against a single or multiple targets that are spread out. But in the case of army against army, longbow-men just had draw the arrow back and fire into the air. The volleys would do the work, and those longbow-men had very little training.

But, enough of the historical discussion. Your character idea, I must admit, does sound very cool now that you've explained the meaning of uber :P

And Sannes. Your character sounds a tad bit... not uber, but unlikely. Change your age to like 23 or something. At 16, you're a zit-faced, angsty, pissed kid. I realize he was trained to hunt mages and all that by all the other great mages and whatnot, but for god sakes give him a few more years and it'll sound a hell of a lot more believable.

Actually, I think it's you who's got the definition wrong... However, you make it clear that your character isn't necessarily uber (But your stated power level makes me edgy about it). He may have the potential to be uberly powerful, but he's inexperienced, and through fate/fortune has accomplished a moment that helps define his character. Ubering refers to a character having powers that his character wouldn't indicate possible.

I make sure all my characters are plausible, with the aid of TvTropes.org for reference. Have you seen the "One Man Army" trope's applications to Real Life? I don't think my character is as far-fetched as you might think.

An uber character is synonymous with "Gary Stu/Mary Sue", a character that is http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BoringInvincibleHero. I shoot for characters that are http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Badass.

Um..that isnt this website. Their rules arent out rules. You just hate realising you brought up an argument you couldnt win, so your pulling in whatever you can to make yourself right.

Also, soren wont be able to use the power Azura gave him until she calls him on his deal, the peramaters of which I have not yet disclosed. This will occur later in the RP.

It is a neutral 3rd-party website dedicated to chronicling what makes stories good. It transcends this site when it comes to pulling off a good story, which RP's are all about.

Also, soren wont be able to use the power Azura gave him until she calls him on his deal, the peramaters of which I have not yet disclosed.

And who would define that? Sounds like an Ass Pull/Deus Ex Machina waiting to happen.

Nah, more of "Great, suicide mission" deal. Azura has little reason to help Soren with anything really. It wont be a "Save myself" thing. It will probably be a "Plots being slow, give us something to do" sort of deal. Know what I'm saying. I will develop his side story throughout my posts and when the main plot comes to a temporary standstill, I'll finally have him tell the others about it, and it will be up to them weather to help him or not.

If the OP appears again, I'll finish my character's backstory... I don't want to waste several hours writing up the elaborate backstory for my khajiit monk just for the guy to never return.

I even intend to write out the history of Elsweyr under the given timeframe.

I'm so sorry for my absense everyone, but it's exam time and I've been busier than... a guy who's busy I guess. Anyways, I'll try and get a starter post up tonight but if not tonight then tomorrow for sure.

Now, Scow, as far as your character goes, I'll accept him as long as you play him well.

As far as the guns go, yes they can kill NPCs in plate armor, but it is unlikely. Nevertheless, they can still hurt like hell and drop a plate wearing knight to his knees. And has been explained, they aren't the most accurate weapon. For example, if you were to aim square at a man's chest and fired, the ullet would hit a few inches off in any direction. A bow or a crossbow are definetaly more accurate.

Bruma Market

Anne’s stomach growled audibly. Did I forget to eat breakfast? She thought. Her stomach growled again. Oh my goodness, I did! That’s never happened before. Anne worked so hard the past couple of days that she had forgotten many different things, locking the doors and windows at night, sleeping, her daily reading and now eating.

I’ve got to stop working so hard. I mean mother never said that I had to leave right away. Maybe I’ll wait another week before leaving. But even as she said it in her head, she knew that she wouldn’t wait, she knew she would leave the moment she was ready.

There wasn’t much left to do though, she just needed to finalize the sale on her house and let the last of her friends know that she was leaving. She hated telling everyone the same story over and over again, especially when she knew it was a lie. She wasn’t leaving to live with her uncle; she was leaving to meet someone she didn’t know to learn something that was forbidden by the Empire and would get her executed if she was found out.

Her stomach growled again. I guess I better get something to eat. She reached into her coin purse and fished out a few measly septims. Well it’s not going to be a banquet, but I guess it’ll do. At least I’ll get more money from the house.

Anne walked down the market street trying to find a tavern. She spent almost half an hour looking until she spotted a cozy looking tavern named The Nord’s Thirst.

She quickly ordered her eggs and bread and ate even quicker. She must have looked like a lioness feasting on a stag, but she didn’t care.

Um... can you start the IC in a new thread, as customary on these boards?

I'll have my character finished hopefully by Saturday, since I have such an elaborate backstory, detailing some of the issues with Elsweyr during this time, including the Ascension of a new Mane (The Riddle'Thar must continue!)
