The Last Remnants of Magic

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:10 pm

Overview

4E 03: The Oblivion Crisis has left the Empire leaderless and in chaos. After three years of heavy debates and suffering, it was agreed that the leaders of the Arcane University were to act as the new leaders of the Empire. The leaders were given the name of the Arcane Quorum and quickly went about to establish order to the Empire.

4E 23: The Arcane Quorum is successful in extinguishing the last fires of chaos and guides the Empire into a Golden Age of peace.

4E 262: The Arcane Quorum cuts all contact with the nobility and citizens of the Empire.

4E 263: Nobles of the Empire begin to disappear and die.

4E 264: With the nobles and leaders of the provinces dead, the Quorum shows itself again under the leadership of Archmage Learin and begins to raise taxes, establish curfews in most cities, and publicly executes anyone that does not follow the new regime.

4E 267: The Orcs and the Nords band together to create an army to destroy the Quorum.

4E 268: The Dunmer, Bosmer, and Redguards join the Rebellion.

4E 269: The Khajiit join the Rebellion.

4E 274: With the rest of Cyrodiil taken by the rebel forces, the Rebellion marches on the Imperial City to end the war. The siege went exactly as planned and victory looked certain. But the Arcane Quorum had different plans. With the combined might of over five thousand of the most powerful magi, the Quorum unleashed every ounce of power they had in them to try to destroy to Rebellion. The power of all the magic combined completely obliterated the Imperial City, destroying nine tenths of the Rebellion and the entire Quorum. All that was left to remember the catastrophe was the crater where the once grand city stood. The last leaders of the Rebellion made Bruma the new capital of the Empire and set about to fixing everything that had gone wrong. As part of their plans, the new Empire deemed magic too dangerous and evil to be kept in existence. The New Empire sent out agents to hunt down every magic user, book, and school and destroy them all.

4E 289: The Empire's agents are hunting down the last remnants of magicka. The Empire's citizen enjoy a time of peace of prosperity.

This is where the story begins.

Tirdas, Last Seed 23, 4E 290
Anne snored softly in her cushioned chair beside her mother's bed. "Anne," a weak voice called out. Anne was awake immediately with her mother's hand in hers.

"What is it mother?" she said softly. Her mother had fallen ill three days ago with a high fever. Anne had gotten the nearest healer to come over but her mother refused to be treated. Every time the healer would come close she would thrash about in her bed. Anne had no choice but to ask the man to leave.

"You need to... go to Skingrad... my child," her mother was sweating profusely.

"No mother, I'm not leaving you here like this."

"I will be... gone soon,"

"Don't say that, please." She could feel tears welling up in her eyes. She didn't want her mother to see her cry so she got up to get her a new towel for her head. Her mother's thin arm reached up and grabbed hers.

"Sit," she commanded. "You need to go to... Skingrad to... learn magic..." Anne's heart caught in her throat.

"How did you-?"

"I know a magic user...when I see one." She smiled weakly.

"Who do I go to?"

"His name is... Gregory Taell. Tell him... that I sent you. He'll know what to do." With that, Anne's mother closed her eyes and laid her head back on her pillow. Several minutes elapsed before her last breath left her.

Anne cried for a long time. After a proper funeral, Anne set about to prepare for the long journey ahead.

This is where the other RPers come in. Your job is to introduce yourself to Anne and inevitably join her on her journey to Skingrad. You may be whatever you like, but remember, magic users are very scarce and I would prefer not to have any, but I might make an exception.

A few notes before we start.

The world is on a much bigger scale than in the games. It can take several weeks travel the distance from Bruma to Skingrad. Cities are also much larger. Each city can house up to a quarter of a million citizens.

Gunpowder has been invented by now and the new innovation of guns has become available to the public. But only guns that are as advanced as from the American Civil War. They are still somewhat scarce and I don't really want everyone to have them. And remember, they aren't all powerful. You CANNOT kill someone in heavy armour very easily, and please don't say you have "perfect aim." These guns aren't the most accurate.

Please send you character sheets to me.

She was playing with fire one morning when all of a sudden a large fireball erupted from her hand cause the building next to her to catch on fire. She never told anyone about this and never attempted to use fire again.

Weaknesses: Sometimes Nelos can be a bit overzealous or ambitious with his plans or ideas, which can very well cost him the element of surprise, or far worse. He is quite arrogant in this manner.

Personality: A dashing man, very much like the other sea-faring rouges of legend. Nelos is ambitious, hearty, and very friendly. He is always willing to help others, be it in battle or if they simply need somebody to talk to. But, his undying hate of Redguards has gotten the better of him in the past, the nobility, as well as their soldiers, can frustrate him to the point of violence.

History: Born as an orphan to be found by an old Argonian woman, Nelos grew up in the swamps of Blackmarsh, right on the border of Cyrodiil. He grew up learning the rivers and wetlands of Blackmarsh, eventually going into the towns in order to steal things to provide for the old woman who took care of him and loved him as if he were her own hatchling. Over the years, Nelos picked up some very subtle hints about the kind old woman, like how every 13th night she would go out and meet her friends in an old cave.

Nelos discovered that his "mother" was a Glenmoril witch, and a very good one at that, respected in secret throughout the magic community. This did not hinder his love for the eccentric old woman however. Years upon years passed by, the two saw the invention of gunpowder, then the first musket, and they also saw how magicians were being hunted down by the rebellion that had taken hold of Tamriel.

Nelos, who was now a magicka sympathizer, took to the streets of Mournhold and other capital cities. He learned how to use guns with deadly proficiency, and by doing various jobs for people, he bought a ship and became a smuggler. But he smuggled no goods, but people, magicka using people. He loaded them onto his ship and smuggled them through the swamps of Blackmarsh, to a secret location, a newly-founded town which housed the runaways.

But, word somehow reached the magic-hunters, who stormed the town, and burned every single one of them at the stake. Including Nelos' beloved Argonian mother and her entire coven. Nelos escaped, and sold his ship in Anvil, finding work as a deckhand in Anvil's harbor. He recently moved to Bruma, and opened up a clothier shop.

Looks good but if you want to keep the current background he will have to be older. He can't be a mage hunter if he's only sixteen. The hunt for magic users started sixteen years ago so he will have been born right at the beginning of the hunt. And I doubt they would send a child to hunt down the most wanted people in the Empire.

No more mages please as of now.

He was the last mage born in the arcane university before the beginning of the hunings. He was trained, he never actually hunted mages. The general idea was that by time he was old enough to start hunting(18) all but a handfull of mages would be wiped out. In order to find the last few, they would need a mage of they're own, hence Soren.

Then, he would be kept under lock and key until he would be needed again. Soren caught wind of this and made a deal with Azura for the power to free himself. He is still fairly inexperienced, and one day, Azura will call back his debt to her. Luckily, most of the daedra are pissed at the new empire because many of they're followers were killed for being mages.

I was going to reveal this later in the story.

I might be interested in this RP simply because it's new, but I need to know the presumed power-level. Also... I need a better grasp on the concept. I don't see what the RP is about. Yes, we have "Nobody Expects the Imperial Inquisition!" But really, what are the PC's supposed to be doing in this world? We could end up with greatly-disjointed characters without a unifying plot or factor...

From what I've gathered, it will be aboutdefending whats left of Magik in the world, and perhaps striking back against the new empire. At least thats what Sorens about, revenge for what they turned him into.

In that case, it might be best to try having mostly Magic-based characters... yes, we are few, but we are the Special, We are the Player Characters, not mere NPC's.

My idea is a Khajiit Martial Arts Master, who has not only achieved the highest levels of Rawlith Khaj, Whispering Claw, and Goutfang, but even invented new khajiit-only Martial Arts, many drawing on the latent pools of Magicka within everyone (even if most aren't trained to access it). He'd stand against the Imperial Inquisition as they may, in their anti-magic zeal, put his martial temple and students at risk, many of which are possibly his own children and possibly grandchildren. (Khajiit have a tendency to have large Family Brambles.) But I'm afraid the power level of a not-truly-old Khajiit martial artist will be beyond the scope of this campaign... He'd be legendary for being a One Man Army due to his martial arts mastery...

Bullets are extremely unlikely... unless it was a headshot (Impossible to intentionally pull off in this era) the form of blending of magic and martial arts performed by my character idea would allow himself to heal in the ~2 minutes before expiration. The fact his torso is protected by Lamellar armor also helps. Unlike many portrayals of martial artists, my Khajiit is a Master of Medium Armor, and moves in it as easily as his own skin. The lore suggests that Mastery of armor does allow freedom of movement.

I've always had a problem with the way "unregulated" RPs handle combat, and these boards "No Ubering" rule because it's so horribly defined and often limiting.

That sounds very uber my friend.

Also, you really underestimate the power of the musket-ball. They are actually far more deadly than our modern day bullets, and hurt a HELL of a lot more. If your uber martial arts master was hit in the chest with one, he'd go down like a sack of bricks, and even if he didn't die right-away, he'd die a few days later from serious infection. Also, headshots aren't impossible to pull off. In the hands of a good marksman who knows the gun he's using very well, they could easily score a headshot.

I'd like to say that, just for the record, few accomplished marksmen are going to go for headshots. You always shoot for the center of mass.
