"The Leftovers" TV Show on HBO

Post » Thu Jul 10, 2014 9:13 pm

Anyone watch the premiere? It debuted Sunday at 10pm on HBO.

Review is live http://ign.com/articles/2014/06/27/the-leftovers-pilot-review

"HBO's The Leftovers casts a gripping, morbid spell. Think of it as a unique entry in the "post-apocalyptic" genre. It's a dystopian future, but with all the amenities intact. It's the human psyche that's taken a beating, not the planet. Numbness, nihilism, anxiety, rage, violence, and mystery all play out on a canvass that resembles our exact world. But it's a world that, on both large and small scales, can't deal with unexplained loss."

The premise follows the aftermath of 140 million people (all ages, races, creeds) that upped and vanished into thin air on a seemingly random October 14th, sending the globe into a swirling haze of questions and proclamations.

Went ahead and watched it. Loved it. The pilot left me with so many questions. Has one of the main creators from Lost. I didn't know this was based from a book.

I thought this was a thread about leftover food.

But OT: I haven't watched the show, and to be fair, I really don't watch TV anymore anyways. Gaming is much more entertaining, but some of the shows on MeTV are good too. I forgot how corny Happy Days was, and the old MASH reruns never fail.

Looks like it will be a religious Rapture related thing

The review says quite the opposite.

I don't know. It being the Rapture seems way too obvious of an explanation. After watching the pilot episode it leaves a lot of questions that aren't so easily answered by it being the Rapture.

Nothing is really known yet

I bet it's a mix of religion and aliens, those people who were taken were chosen to be spared the fate that the "Leftovers" will have to suffer through.

I figured the same thing in regards to religion and aliens. The bad thing about TV shows is that it's going to be a while before we get a solid answer. Maybe won't even get one. A lot more questions will arise well before we get any answers.

I saw ads for this while watching latest True Blood (Yes, I'll watch until the bitter end) on the On Demand channel. I might have to start this if it's any good. I'll give it a few more weeks and see what the consensus is.

Finally got around to watching it. Seems like a good show. They could either really go places with it, or royally [censored] it up. I'll keep watching for another episode or two and see where it goes.

Yeah, I watched it today when I got the chance. How'd you feel about it? I'm curious of your opinion because I felt lost during most of the episode. Almost like I had missed an episode or two prior to watching this one, yet it was only the second. I'm sure things will begin making more sense as the series progresses but I didn't really like it. I watched the preview for episode 3 and it looked like it was going to be quite confusing as well.

Really enjoyed the pilot episode and hoping I can stick with the show. What did you think, Jack?

I watched both episodes and I'm not sure what I think of it. I'll watch one more episode and then I'll decide if I will keep watching it or not.

I'm enjoying it for what it's worth so far. It's been a slow build thus far and I see it continuing this way for awhile. I'm not sure what to make of the Guilty Remnants. I think it's kind of silly that they chain smoke. I guess them not talking makes a sense since they are pretty much punishing themselves, but the chain smoking is odd. I'm also waiting to see where Holy Wayne's story arc goes as well as Kevin's son, Tom, who is one of his followers.

Nice to see someone try to be creative with this genre. I look forward to how they'll explain the disappearances (hopefully without it being Aliens, Religion, or anything else commonly used)

My theory is that they tried to control the Aether and unmade themselves...or all fused together into the skin of some giant robot :P

I think they may never explain fully what truly happened. Book readers say it's never fully revealed in the book either.

That's probably the smart choice. You either use a tried and true explanation and come off as unoriginal, or be creative and be called pretentious for coming up with something complicated (the easy explanations are all over used by now)

One of the things that really annoyed me back when Children of Men came out is that people seemed obsessed with the idea that there would or should be some explanation revealed at some point in the film. Seems like this is gonna breed the same lack of imagination.

Not heard of the show before, but the premise sounds intriguing and HBO is always good, so I might check it out.

Less than on topic posts have gone away. At this point its pretty clear what the thread is about. Post off-topic spam and get a warning and a break from posting for at least three days.

This is not a topic about food, please keep posts related to the TV Show.

If you want to post about food, we have a few active food threads floating around, or make a new one about that.
