The Level that Never Comes

Post » Fri May 07, 2010 1:28 am

Ok, so I thought I had this all planned to perfection. I planned out my leveling for maximal efficiency with only a single +5/+5/+5 and the rest as +5/+5/+1. My plans had nearly reached fruition when it happened. I went to sleep to gain a level and I get the message "Perfection cannot be improved upon. Your attributes are as high as they can go." At first I assumed it gave me that message because there simply were no points to distribute but in fact I had not gained a level or any hitpoints. I could live with that, but the more obnoxious thing was that I was now locked out of ever using a trainer again (fortunately, I had knocked out the more odious of skills such as Mercantile beforehand). Not only that, but since the level never applied, every time I go to sleep it gives me that darn message again. I guess it isn't exactly a bug, but it does seem to be a case the developers didn't fully polish up.

Anyhow, I'm curious as to if others have found this irritating and how they handled it. I suppose in theory many levels back I could have deliberately done some inefficient levels so that my stats would max at the same time I ran out of major skills, but I'm not nearly so compulsive as to go quite this far. I'm running on the PC so I'm assuming there are other avenues I could pursue via the command-line. My big question would be how to clear the status of needing to sleep to level up so that the message goes away. My next question would be how to adjust my level and hitpoints to simulate the levels I could have reached using my major skills. Finally, is there a console command that would let me use the trainers again?

Thanks.

Simplest thing to do would be to lower one of your attributes, like luck, which you really do not need at 100. You can use the console to do that but I'm not sure which command you need to use, maybe just set attribute.

There's a lot of levelling mods out there. Maybe this is among the things that Elys' uncapper mod can do. Check 'dm out on tesnexus.

It's working as designed: once all attributes reach 100 you can't level again. No real reason to since the game no longer changes (loot/enemies are maxxed) except that everyone gets more health with each new level.

Right, I never said it wasn't working as designed just another case where the devs could have applied some polish. For instance, why not just give you a message when you distribute your final points that includes that little message about perfection and then never trigger the level up code again rather than make it display every time you sleep for as long as you play.

I'll check out some of those ideas you mentioned. I'd still like to know if there is a way to just clear the status that says I've leveled. It's not going to kill me if I don't get the levels, I mainly just want to clear the level-up status indicator and repetitious message box.

Thanks.

EDIT: Ok, I'm over-thinking this. Lowering my luck will be sufficient for my nit-picking needs. I did discover something that will be of interest to anyone using this technique. Assume we are using the command:

player.setav luck 95

For the near level capped player, this will let you level 5 more times provided you do it BEFORE you actually cap. It appears that once all your attributes hit 100 it sets a flag that you are done leveling forever and hence the problem is set in stone. I resolved the issue by loading one level before I capped and lowering my luck from there. No unusual side effects seen so far. I'll probably tune my luck to max out at 99 to allow for future re-tuning just in case I decide to level with an item like the Oghma Infinium so I don't get stuck with that message box again.

What exactly does luck do for you? I see all the descriptions including luck and all they say is that it's not tied to any skills and doesn't directly affect you. So why increase it? Why not go for the 5+5+5?

The major effect of Luck is to add .4 skill point to all player skills per point of luck over 50. The same is deducted from all skills for Luck under 50. Since most skill effects are capped at 100, once you get the skill to 100 Luck has no more effect on the skill. Also the higher a skill gets, the less effect Luck has on it, percentage-wise.

Luck also adds health to the team you bet on in the Arena making wins more likely.

Luck also factors into the banishing effect on Mehrune's Razor. I think that's about it. There's a write up on WIKI UESP, in case I've forgotten anything.

As implemented Luck is a thoroughly unsatisfactory stat. It absorbs a lot of resources in the way of attribute bonus points and gives diminishing returns as you level. You'll have a better character sooner if you ignore Luck altogether, except perhaps for picking it as a favored attribute at char gen.

The only reasons I've ever seen for doing a 5/5/1 build are 1) because it's a bit easier than 5/5/5 and, 2) like Mt Everest, it's there.

Thanks for the info on the permanent 'done levelling' flag.

Rather than go to all that trouble, why not just use a mod that allows you to develop beyond the cap, like Elys' Uncapper? With that in place, all your skills and attributes can go up to 200.

Honestly, I try to restrict the mods I install to either official mods or the unnofficial patch mods. Additionally it isn't my objective to over-level just to allow me to fully level my skills without getting a dialog box. My explaination might have been long winded but in essence the luck method is so much easier than downloading something and it only really applies to people who spent time planning out the efficient leveling process as you generally won't fully max out if you don't plan your leveling. When you see you are getting close to capping just count out how many levels you have left to gain and deduct enough from your luck to prevent fully capping.

I tried this again tonight and I'm not getting the same issue, I'm thinking I must have done something differently last night. There does NOT appear to be a 'done leveling' flag. My original concern appears to be valid in that once you cap, you can't clear out your experience and so it keeps displaying the dialog when you sleep.

In short, if you run into this problem just type: "player.setav luck 99" to enable one level-up or whatever luck value you want to enable multiple level ups to clear out your exp. That said, always save periodically in case something else hoses up doing all this.

Sorry for the double-post.
