The Library of Tes F'rum

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:04 am

But seriously, we cannot start thinking about the location of this 'library' until we have modders and contributers ready.

Agreed. There's no imminent rush, but it would be good to get the ball rolling. There's nothing we can really do with the design and location of the library (ok, someone could do concept art, and LN has suggested an ideal location, but...) until the game comes out anyway, so for now it would be good if people could start thinking up ideas for stories, and if we could get a good idea of something practical to collect all the stories together in.

Y'know, if you're interested, we'd need someone to lore-check books once they start coming in :)

Sure, I'm up for it, as long as you guys promise that you at least try to get the lore right :P I'd hate to have to tell someone that their 2,000 word story has to be discarded because TES has no short, bearded dwarves :P

I'm also volunteering my modding and modeling knowledge, should it be needed.

I can probably come up with a book or few. Granted, they won't all be actual stories, but they'll be usable.

Awesome :D

As I see it, the library will be split up into sections. In there will be historical and historical fantasy sections. The historical section would have to be entirely lore-correct. The historical fantasy section would be more suited for the likes of the Iliad which, while it may well have been based on historical fact, I think it's fair to say has more than it's fair share of "lore-breaking" fantasy. I'd suggest the less learned in lore submit their books into "historical fantasy", just to be on the safe side. We can always move books between sections if we think they're unsuitable for the section they're submitted into.

Has anyone used Dropbox or another such service much before? If we could set up different dropboxes for each section, and have it set so that the only people who can view the files are the admins and the people who submitted the individual files, I think that would solve the problem.

Dropbox is definitely too much work for a series of text documents. I'd got for google docs, or just a forum thread. Making it overly complicated discourages contributions.

I think Google docs are stopping support for file uploads next month? What I was intending was just having a few submission links in the OP going to whichever site we use, so it's all centralised on here but with the books all organised and supported pretty much for us.

I was thinking just copy/paste text in the appropriate location, no need for uploads. Editing would also be easier than it is on a static document.

Problem with that approach is we'd end up with all the books available for everyone to read long before the mod ever gets released. I'd like a way for only the author and admins to view the books, until the mod is released. Perhaps an Invisionfree forum, split into sections (linked to from the OP on these forums for easy access), which guests can start topics in but not view topics. That way the author doesn't even need to register; they can just paste in their book then leave. I've never tried such a trick before though, so I'm not sure if it'll allow the start topic permission without the read topic permission.

I still think thats too complicated  If you want to keep it totally secret, why not have people PM/Email you the books?

Yeah, I just tried and it wouldn't allow me to start a topic without view permissions anyway. PM/Email would work, but they're prone to be getting lost or forgotten. Still, it's only text. If we were to have a forum for the team, I could just copy and paste them into the forum as I receive them. That way the people working on the library have access to all books, while they remain closed to everyone else.

I could do some writing, it'd be fun. I hardly know enough to write any historical or metaphysical stuff, but I'm quite confident I could do a short story in the vein of A Game At Dinner or similar.

Just don't expect anything before June, I have a long hard road of exams to come.

If this all works out well, I don't mind adding the new books to the game. Added to an existing library, a new library, or spread across bookstores, maybe some copies lying around in other places, things like that. Or maybe something more creative.

I am pretty good with the lore, I read the wiki for fun usually.
I could also write a few lore-friendly storys, not sure how good I would be though.

If there's no library in Winterhold, I'd like to build it there. I'd like them all in the one place rather than spread about. Or at least, all in the one place after you've finished the quest line.

I'm working on making children's stories for Pelagiad Expanded for Morrowind. When they're done and released, feel free to use anything I write.

If I can make a suggestion for storing the stories? Why don't you use a single email adress for the storage alone. With Gmail you can add tags as well so you can devide the stories into sections. Also all you would need to do is give the password to all the admins, gmail allows multiple people to log in at the same time (tried this when I started up my own company with a few classmates). It's rather difficult for multiple people to forget about it and because the email is only used for the stories alone it doesn't get lost either.

This sounds like the best idea so far. No need to move anything about or anything :)
