The Lightweight class : Shotguns?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:48 pm

I feel that the lightweight model is designed to be the quick and agile to offset poor health and fragile.

but I believe that the "out run" model just isnt effective. It doesn't have any guns with firepower other than the snipers (which combined with enhanced climbing actually makes a good combo) but there isn't anything that provides enough for a 1 on 1 situation in most of the tight spaces that these map designs have. Many of the objectives warrant such needs but seeing as you can't change body types mid match to fit a situation (nor should you be able to IMO.) there should be more you can do with that body type firepower wise. I dont mean just throwing the assault rifles into their arsenal as that renders the midweight pointless. But i can completely see the shotguns which rely on closing the distance before dying being a great way to atleast take 1 person with you in a 2 mid-weights on 1 situation. Its not to say that drum SMG's isn't effective so much as it doesn't do the class justice and play to its "strengths" in any way. Running around and going close quarters with such guns really has no difference in effect vs going mid range. And running say in a room you are supposed to defend is quite hopeless. You can't "out run" and shoot people at the same time with an SMG. Leaving the lightweights in the dust behind in my mind - superior middleweights. They can't really go to TOO many places that the middleweights can't, and going back to the model about "out running" i see the light shotgun as being the perfect solution.

it brings firepower to kill a middleweight SHOULD YOU PLAY YOUR BODY TYPE ADVANTAGE - (out running and closing the distance faster) - It doesn't nerf the classes downsides of being fragile. If you can get the shot off before they close the distance or you can keep track of them you STILL very much win. And in a 2 on 1 situation they probably will only get 1 of you which is how it should be in my opinion.

It fits perfectly with the lightweight class and I personally would like to see them get access to it.

Vote with the polls.

Feedback and bumps are appreciated. My last topic got over 200 votes in it but it got bumped off the 3rd page and so now it is lost into oblivion. (the post explaining how the Bots worked exactly and how the devs want to and can approach the situation) Even if you just say "voted" it would make things easier.

You are looking at lights from a solely combat lens. Lights are not for combat, they are for objectives. Try escorting data with a heavy, and then again with a light. The lights have their role just as the heavies have theirs.

I forgot about the weapon restrictions for lights, thats why I don't mess with it. But I will be build a light for certain situations. I have just been sticking with Medium. Most useful for most situations. But you get 10 carachter slots so gotta try em all. The option itself is excellent and a brilliant, simple way to keep gameplay more interesting and add varibles to the game.

The problem with this being that your body type shouldn't play to what your class is. (medic engineer etc)

all of the classes should have the same advantages from the classes they choose. Yet this theory says that if i want to be a light class i cant do anything other than be an operative behind lines capturing or a medic running around healing and nothing else. it eliminates 70% of the objectives in this game based on your body type that you can't change mid game. If my team needs more firepower around the VIP or needs someone to get to place the demo charges they should be able to ATTEMPT to assist as a light body type and not be excluded from a majority of the main objectives.

Also:
It's not so much that they are being forced into combat so much that they can't handle any combat outside of certain situations. You either have to have a sniper to do damage, or you run with a Drum SMG and hope for the mid range encounter 1 on 1 that isn't vs a heavy with a minigun. Its not the CLASS design thats at fault here so much as the level design and WHERE the level design comes into play with the objectives that the lightweight is suited for.

I believe all the weights have ways to play off their arsenal effectively - the heavy firepowered tanks, etc etc. But the Lightweights only have sniper roles for that. And to be honest. This game wasn't developed for the sniper in mind (and I'm not saying thats a bad thing so much as it takes such exclusivity and doesn't give options for any other weight specific bonuses.

It is the class that can make the most entertaining and skilled use of the shotgun - yet it isn't allowed to.

I'm confused. Are you implying that Lights can't use Shotties? I'm a Light with a Shotty..........

Perhaps I have discovered a glitch? I defaulted my gun to the Shotgun as a Medium, THEN switched to Light, so maybe it didn't reset my gun?
HMMMMMMM. I kinda wanna try with a Heavy-only gun. :cheat:

I only play as a light body-type (light engineer mostly), and find I it to be really well balanced. You don't have too little, or too much health for what you are able to do, it's perfect to me.

@Jacksonofspades

It's just a glitch, lights normally cannot use any shotgun.

I completely agree with Trauma Hunter. after playing as a light class with low ammo smg's that have limited range and firepower, an alternative weapon choice like a close range shotgun would be nice. Usually, due to call of duty, i am against shotguns and i despise using them, but if splash damage can incorporate a well balanced shotty that doesn't have full auto or huge range, then im all up for it. I'm not saying that light operatives should be up close and personal killing machines, but simply giving them a little more variety and firepower in close quarter combat would be nice.

Lights can run behind you too fast to be able to have shotguns, a buffed galatic SMG gets the job done quick enough.

I haven't tried the lights. I'm enjoying heavy and medium more than I thought I would.

But they are so much more fragile that sneaking around plays to their body type does it not? It gives them a combat edge that they otherwise do not have. And that edge is not only a double edge sword with aiming but also with timing. It requires alot more finese and skill in this game to go sliding under cover, turning around, vaulting over, wall jumping behind your chaser, and shotgunning them. (specific scenario - I understand) but the concept of actually having a chance to fight back if you can play your body type correctly and use everything at your disposal effectively (including the shotgun) i think this game would be playing well to its selling point much more effectively than it is now by excluding the lightweight body types from fulfilling ulterior combat roles and objective flexibility.

I played for an hour or two as a Light after being a Heavy.

I don't know what to think about having shotguns. I would think maybe it requires some balancing. There are pros and cons to having shotguns as a Light, I would think.

Maybe it's the maps or the fact that I was a Medic with Battle Hardened and sometimes Self-Buffed Health, but the Light was not too bad in the missions.... So far.
But, if it's a close-up defending thing, my dude goes down much faster than my Heavy, lol! But I try to stay and heal and run, heal and run, heal and run with some shooting enemies
in the back (even if the enemy AI turns around a bit too fast sometimes, ugh).

Then, again, I had the glitch (see below) at the time, heh.

Hmm.... I don't know. I think it would depend on balancing the weapons... Each side of the argument has their pros and cons.

OMG, I was going to post something similar to this, but I think it's just a glitch so I didn't post....

EDIT: Someone mentioned that it may have been a glitch. At least it was an amusing glitch, lol! :D

I had a Heavy with a Machine Gun as primary and SMG as secondary, but when I made him into a Light guy, he still could carry the Machine Gun, lol! DIE, ENEMY AI! DIE!---Well, actually, being a Medic, I healed and ran back with some occasional finishing off a couple of the enemies. It was weird and kind of funny.... I should totally try that again, hee. :hehe:

Biggest problem with lights n shotties is the shotty is overpowered, I cant count how many times I've been dropped by a shotty from WAY outa range in 1 hit as I dump a full mag of assault ammo. I dont think splash got the "cone" of shot right. Yes it spreads but doesnt lose power over distance.

I think you need to specify which shotty.

The heavy duty shot gun acts like a mid range weapon thats more accurate fired at the hip than ADS (weird but this is just my observation)

And yes. It IS a beast of a gun.

But the light shot gun - not so much and frankly this is why no one uses it as a medium class that i've seen. Its not warranting a boost in its performance i don't think but its not the "prefered" set up of choice from what ive seen and heard.

If you're highly skillful, you can shoot your grenades like ut shock combos perfectly every time(important to point out) and utilize your other abilities so effectively with your perfect accuracy and timing.

Light seems to be a better-but-harder-to-use case.

Have you even tried to use the Galactic SMG? with extended mags that thing can clear a room...Even without extendo mags it can clear one or two enemies before it reloads..

The Mossington shotgun is my primary weapon on my medium, and I love it. Nothing says "take a seat, chump!" like rounding a corner and unloading a shotgun into someone's face. :)

I just keep a fairly accurate smg as my secondary so I can get some long range when needed and I'm all set.

telling someone to use an "op" gun is hardly the solution for a balanced game.

(im not saying its OP but that is DEFINITELY the general consensus and if it is such - then naturally its going to get a nerf... and then what?)

It's uneccerary since a light can still slide kick a heavy to the ground, that knock over enough of a disruption that the light can shoot him on a ground.

This implies that the mediums cant do this.

This implies it can't be done with shotguns as well

and lastly this implies that its easier to run into someone than it is to shoot them from a distance.

How did that imply mediums can do it?

The topic is to give shotguns to lights, so we are in a discussion about close range combat. Since lights are the fastest of the three body types, in a conflict of close quarters, it would be better to run in and kick an opponent then to shoot form a distance.
