The Little Things That Annoy You In Games

Post » Fri Dec 03, 2010 4:53 am

Everyone must of played a game that while your playing it think, "Wow, this is pretty good ga-....wait a minute! Why's that clipping through that when I do that?" After spotting a small little niggle, that little niggle tends to stay with you most of the game. The problem with me is that I forget about these little niggles until next time I play the game, then it annoys me more. So, what's your list of little things or details that ruin otherwise great games for you?

For me it's:
STALKER Series - Weapons are basically reversed and everythings on the wrong side, this annoys me even more with the SA80 as everything would be pointless on the other side of the weapon (Unless its one of them specially designed 'leftie' ones that dont actually get used)

Homefront - The occasional jerky animation. This happens in just about every game out there, but I notice it more in this game.

Saints Row 2 - Clothing clipping through other items of clothing. This usually means that cool guy look you perfected is ruined.

Mouse lag. Probably what annoyed me the most about Oblivion, until I tweaked it enough to where it wasn't a problem. But in any FPS mouse lag is unacceptable.

Bugs that will never get fixed.
Defend X because it has [censored] AI.
Smokey Train Mission in GTA SA can't shoot for [censored]
Minions being POS and end up having to go to the area to defend...happens in GTA and in Saints Row games.

Quick-time events. Also unnecesary animations in online games.. looking at you Metal Gear Online.. Other than that clunky unresponsive controlls can ruin whole games.

Lack of quicksave and limited weapon slots in modern FPS. I'm looking at you Killzone, FEAR, Crysis, Call of Duty, etc. :stare:

Ennemies that can see you and gun you down from 1000 meters away when you're crouched behind a wall and moving slowly.

It's a problem in soooooooo many games.

Bullet penetration being weak. In Medal of Honor, I have an amazing sniping spot on Kandahar Marketplace that lets me see right into the enemy spawn point but leaves me protected on three sides. However, there's a small wooden pole holding up an awning that people end up spawning behind sometimes, and when I plan on shooting them through the pole, the bullet won't penetrate through it. I've inspected the pole before when I spawned on that side of the map and it's only about six inches in diameter. Certainly a 7.62 sniper round can get through that.

Loot drops that don't make sense. I hate things like fighting ancient living statues that have been buried for centuries and finding money on them; or fighting normal opponents who are clearly heavily armed and armoured and all the have is a few bullets or a dagger or something.

Fighting mechanics that dont work the way I like it. Or are just plain ugly.

Unexplained ways of fighting. Boss fights tend to have these. Example: Price of Persia Two Thrones: the boss fight with the 2 brothers. 1 Wielding a sword, 1 wielding an axe. A hint on what to do would have been nice....
Me: "Why cant I hurt them?!"
Internet: "You can only damage one of them if and only if the moon is full, it rains, and it's M'aiq's birthday."

Stun-locks.

Don't turn in the Up Sale mission.

Enemies in Borderlands always drop loot relevant to the weapons they're carrying, as well as what you're carrying.

Lack of good placed checkpoints or miles away check points.

Here's three good exsamples 2 bad 1 good.

1: Tomb Raider Underworld: I had to stop this game cause the checkpoints where getting far in between and dying caused me to repeat areas/traps I really didn't want to go though again. Also it got to a point where I didn't know where to go next.

2: Turok for the PS3/360: This would have been a decent game if not for the miles away checkpoint. If this would have been fixed and maybe the difficulty tweek down a bit---it would have been a good game.

3: Tron Evolution: This game does it right on checkpoints placement---not too far, not to close---it's just right and once you get past an annoying area there's a checkpoint waiting for you so you'll never have to repeat that headache area again---at least until the next time you replay the game :D.
