The little things that interest you

Post » Sun Nov 14, 2010 5:28 pm

Are there any little details that you picked up on in the game that made you think, Oh, that's cool?
I'm a svcker for the details, especially in characters. And two characters intrigue me: Charon and Desmond.
Charon: Ferryman of Hades, carries the dead across the river Styx. Neither heavenly nor infernal, the ultimate neutral. He's an interesting character to get into, there are a lot of little things to think about, not least the odd fact that he manages to enthrall 90% of his female employees. It is odd, when you consider that for whatever reason these girls find him so fascinating, a real life version of him... really wouldn't care.
Desmond: Well, I just came across him yesterday, but I already wanna work everything out XD His dogs, Geri and Freki, are named for the wolves Odin had at his side at time, their names mean 'greedy' and approx. 'ravenous'. Good names for attack dogs, but is there any more significance?

... Or I might be the only one sad enough to think that hard about these things. XDDDD

The beautiful Art Deco architecture in Downtown D.C.

Op:Anch- Because apart from being deluded in Chases delusional ideas. It gives an incite on how American soldiers were just before the war.

i enjoyed investigating the Outcast base at Fort Independence, reading all the research terminals revealed some interesting details about the weaponry of the game. I wish there more more terminals that provide background information. Exploring the raider settlement at Evergreen Mills was also fun as it was the first time I saw any sort of effort by raiders to call an area home.

I like finding the radio signals like Signal Oscar Zulu, yes it's sad but it made me think how would I deal with having my wife and kids in a situation like that, and what would I do.

I like reading all the pre-war terminals. They're so insignificant compared to everything that happened in the world, but I get an insight of what everyday life was like before the bombs fell. Some really interesting stuff.

As the guy above mentioned, the Oscar Zulu signal is brilliant. Very creepy when you see those skeletons and think the voice of someone possibly 100+ years dead is still speaking to us...

The chess set with tiny gnomes and energy cells in the Satellite Dish place, has 3 big dishes with raiders inside.

I like finding chessboards with mini gnomes and bottles on it. xD

I also like how you can manipulate everything in the game world. :)
There's nothing like killing someone and cutting off their limbs, organizing them on a counter, putting the head into a wooden crate, and laying the abdomen on a table in a sixually explicit manner. ^_^

Or just throwing the pieces into a bathtub.

What a... terrifying mind you have. You're a perfect addition to Underworld. XD

While we're talking about pieces, something I want to see is a Behemoth FLYYYYYYYYY after stepping on 40 bottlecap mines. I saw it on youtube, now it's my ambition. XD

A couple things about the whole Angela/Diego thing interest me...

1. Give Angela ant pheremones to help her seduce Diego: Good Karma. Give Ronald Quantum to help him seduce Sierra: Bad Karma. Uh...

2. You can really beat the crap out of every religion in the wasteland...
Megaton: people worship the bomb. You can disarm it. Or kill them all.
Oasis: people worship Harold. You can kill him.
Rivet City: no, you can't kill God or St. Monica. But look at the padre; I mean, he looks about five years out of the grave. If you help Angela "convince" Diego to leave the priesthood, the Church of St. Monica will be leaderless when he croaks.

Angela loves Diego and wants to be happily married with him. Ronald just wants to get into Sierra's pants.

I wouldn't really say the latter is evil, but I don't think it's the kind of thing a good character would do either. Personally, I think it'd be better if it had no effect on your karma at all.

I find Agatha’s dedication to her craft in this twisted, barren waste of great interest and inspiration.

Well said. I think that there's a reason why getting Agatha her fiddle and helping Hannibal secure the Memorial are the game's two great Positive Karma moments, the things that will show up in the epilogue. Agatha's violin represents beauty and art. The Memorial represents freedom and hope. And Project Purity preserves life itself.

Something else...

I think it would be cool if you could buy a spade at a junk store, and if you find a corpse on soft ground, bury it. Treating the dead with a modicum of dignity would then give you a small karma boost.

Oh yeah, Fallout has plenty of little things that make the game good. While some people are running around just doing the story line and shooting supermutants with a gatling gun, some of us take the time to explore the little things in our environments. Taking an idea from a brilliant friend of mine, "Signifigance is the only thing that matters in the world. It comes in the smallest of packages and it can be anything, anywhere, at anytime."

So here's some things that I enjoyed:
Finding the long since ghoulified Chinese Army spy and his dead, skeletal partner, with a gun gripped tightly in his hand. What did this tell me? Two men faced with a challenge took two different routes. One chose the easy way out, the other, forced into an enternity of ghoulification... Until I put a .44 in his head, ending his miserable existance. Just doing him a favor :P.

Then there was the downed Chinese plane with a Chinese Ghoul weilding a Chinese Assault rifle. Now that was my first surprise, besides the radio signal. The second was the entire factory full and their leader, who carried a sword.

What possibly could've been the president's body (or Ghoul) in the remnants of the White House.

The bodies of the scientist and the Never-was-Vault Dweller outside of Vault 87. The scientists radiation suits are still there along with a small supply of Rad-X and Rad-Away and the skeleton of a man in a tattered suit and a briefcase holding some clothes, he was there when the bomb was dropped and was about to enter the Vault. Spent all that money just to die at the door.

The teddy bear that, when taken, enrages a nearby Super Mutant Behemoth and causes it to run at you and attack. It shows it has some form of attachments and intelligence.

Mr. Crowley. First thought that came to mind was Ozzy Ozbournes song "Mr. Crowley" then this,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleister_Crowley <--- Aleister Crowley. Just read the first paragrpah and understand.

Indeed! It's the "little" things that make this game a masterpiece, instead of being merely a great game.

I loved when I first stepped outside Vault 101 and saw the skeletons around the door, with signs reading "We're dying out here!" and "Let us in!"

QUOTE: Angela loves Diego and wants to be happily married with him. Ronald just wants to get into Sierra's pants.
Well taken point. However, I have to wonder if I'm doing either of them a favor, helping them start their lives together under false pretenses. Marriage is hard enough when both sides enter into it of their own free will.

---------------------------------

I think that a lot of characters sort of represent certain things. Case in point:

James: Hope
Col. Autumn: Control

Agatha: Beauty or Art

Dukov: Self-Indulgence

Three-Dog: Truth
President Eden: Lies

Hannibal: Freedom
Eulogy: Slavery

Lone Wanderer: Choice

You nailed it!

Although with Three Dog, I’d argue his major trait is vanity.

Eden – Truth or lies depends on your perception of reality. “Lie” supposes knowingly uttering a falsehood, Eden certainly fits that bill with some of his statements. Other statements, ehhh I’m not so sure. People (or self aware artificial intelligence in this case) have been known to fall under the spell of their own preconceptions. His short-circuiting when confronted with irrefutable logic shows his willingness to at least consider the very foundation of his world-view.

I think I’ve been playing this game a wee bit too much.

It could also be argued that James represents life (water for everyone), Eden represents death (poisoned water for everyone), and the Wanderer, representing choice, decides whose vision becomes reality. Deep stuff.

And I still say that Diego should be allowed to choose for himself, rather than be duped into marriage via chems. Just an opinion.

Same here.
The very first time I saw Angela Staley I thought she was talking to the wall. The local nutcase, or something. Turns out due to a bug, or something, Diego was standing further up the hallway stuck between something or other. But, when I saw Angela 'talking to herself' and later had the option to give her the chem I just thought it was too deceptive. If she charms him into marrying her wouldn't she always wonder if he'd have married her if she hadn't had a bit of 'help.'

Poor teddies :(

I like learning about all the history in the game, finding notes and holotapes, reading computers and what happened there. I find that interesting.
