The Little Things You Love

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 3:30 pm

There are a lot of topics right now complaining about the game, so I want to bring some positivity back to the forums.

So what are the little things in Skyrim you love? For me:

  • How your eyes have to adjust to light and darkness.

It is just a small thing but I love it, will post more as the thread goes on.

I like sneaking into caverns and overhearing the bandits' conversations. For example, I walked into a mine near Riverwood I think, and one bandit was telling the other, "Don't worry - we're safe here. There's a guard outside. And don't forget about that rock trap." And sure enough, there was a guard outside, and also a rock trap. The other bandits also had something interesting to say when I lowered the the bridge.

I like the butterflies and torchbugs and the fact that you can catch them.

I like how interesting some of the side quests are.

Like Theseus, I love the random conversations. I was in a mage dungeon and there was a room with a forge. One said to another "Why are we even doing this? We use magic, not weapons."

I also love the whole "witnesses" thing with crimes. A guard said something to me at night that was frankly quite insulting considering my standing with The Companions, so I beat him to death and dragged his body into the river. It flowed away, leaving only his sword as evidence. Because no one saw it, I got away Scott free.

Well, one of the things I notice and enjoy is that there's no longer automatic battle music when killing a wolf for example. Now, I'm constantly looking over my shoulder when I hear a noise.

I think that's when they sneak up on you. I still get it for random wildlife attacks, but not for sabre cats that maul me out of nowhere.

You can find ants crawling on some tree stumps. Also, those hawks that you see flying through the air will eventually go back to a nearby nest to protect their eggs. I enjoy all the stuff that makes this game seem like a living, breathing world.

In one of my early dungeon dives, I saw a bandit at the end of a short corridor. He moved to the side and the corridor was full of swinging blades. He obviously pulled a lever to turn them on. I thought "wow, that's a smart bandit". Then he charged at me without turning them off, which wasn't quite so smart. May he rest in peace.

I have to admit that the food in Skyrim sometimes makes me hungry. Baked potatos, roasted leg of goat, apple pie, mammoth steak, grilled chicken briast, ...

I love the fact that you can take torches off walls, and that dungeons are much better than oblivion. I love that houses have bookshelves now.

I don't pick up many books, so when I got my bookcase I put my two books on it. They couldn't support themselves. As an avid reader IRL I was a little saddened by how pathetic it looked as they stood up for a second, wobbled and fell over :(

How using Dragon shouts of area damage - frost, fire - leaves a trails of frozen marks or burnt marks. Dragon's own breath causes this as well. Nice touch when wood is still red with embers or stone is covered like an icecube from frost.

-I love how a side-quest to simply go to a shop turns out into going to a cave and find out a conspiracy and something liek that. ;D

- How i get into the game, the immersion.

- The environment and the graphics (Ok, this isn't little things but i also love)

How the quest markers appear on the world map so you don't have to spend countless time looking for something if you don't want to.

hmm a few I can think of

* the fact blades have varied level of bloodiness, to barely stained to covered in blood

* the fact packs of wolfs run around you in circles, trying there best to flank you

*the fact that predators, like wolfs follow and attack rabbits, goats etc

* the atmosphere inside some of the more crowded inns, when the bard plays a song and X NPC starts "dancing" with a mug of ale/mead in there hand, makes me wanna sit down by the fire.

* the fact you can actually hear the dragons speak the shout of there breath.

* All the comments reflecting what I done, from the skills I master to the gear I wear, and what I done for the people

I love so much about this game:

- I love the water, the tress, the rocks and the snow. This world is amazing, and a visual treat every time I press play.

- I love how all the races look so unique and highly detailed.

- I love the blood red eyes, and beautiful angular faces of the Dunnmer.

- I love how *ahem* how detailed the male bodies are in this game.
Real care and time was taken with muscles and skin texture. Which makes it also a nice visual treat to the eyes.
I can make a buff elf fighter that does not look silly.

- I love the ability to catch butterflies and bugs. They look amazing in the game world as well.

- I love cooking, and sweet rolls.

- I love dual blades, I love magic....and bows.

- I love the bards that preform in the inns, it adds some wonderful atmosphere to the inns.

- I love how sixy fur armor looks...on my male characters.

- I love...all the music.

:hugs:

I love how the light spell called candle light creates a buetiful glowing orb which follows one around for the duration of the spell. It has a certain spiritual quality as if giving off a beacon of hope. I wonder if theres an evil version called something like Daedric Black Mass Candle Light Of Despair radiating violent and dark colors.

I love the shadows and how they effect gameplay. In dungeons i've been spooked a few times when a shadow suddenly glided across a long corridor revealing the presence of an enemy. It even changed size and shape according to distance. What wonderful eerie ambience like something out of a Christopher Lee or Boris Karloff horror movie.

I love the dungeons and how they each feel different yet totally part of the lore of Tamriel. A few times i felt i was back in TES 2 DAGGERFALL and another time MORROWIND or even TES 1 ARENA.

I love the amazing variety and devious traps all over dungeons. Someone must have had a ton of fun designing those.

I love how every npc in SKYRIM has there own background and history from a Orc who is a writer in some secluded inn to a drunk who people want to save from himself because he is mostly a nice guy.

I love how the water all over SKYRIM looks. The way it reflects light across a cold breath taking lake view or how fish are jumping about in a cascading waterfall. Then theres the ease of catching different types of fish and cooking them up for a meal.

I love how unpredictable enemies can be when it comes to being dangerous. It definitely takes strategy to take opponents down and once i figured out their weakness then i have to find a whole new strategy for another enemy even if its of the same species. Talk about having individual strengths as if one spider ate more compared to the weaker one i may have just dispatched.

I love the different factions especially the religious ones and the inspiring yet serious dialogue they have which buetifully voice acted in a natural manner.

I love that there are witches just like in TES 2 DAGGERFALL.

I love the incredible powerful weather where one can see a major difference from a raging blizzard to a calm sunny day. Reminds me of TES 2 DAGGERFALL when storms could be truly blinding as i traveled inside and outside of cities.

I love the sound effects. From howling wolves in the distance to creepy movements which could be something slaking about waiting for a victim or could just be crumbling rock or the wind in some death drenched dungeon.

I love the puzzles in dungeons and how the answers are usually right in front of one to get passed them.

I love the buetiful designs and ornamentations on objects such as urns and the dungeon walls aswell as in towns. Oh and on everything else too like armor and weapons.

I love how talking to npcs feels very natural and fluid without any sense of disconnecting from the environment.

I love how alchemy, smithing, cooking, enchanting, mining are all done.

I love being able to buy a house and having it decorated by the person i pay to do it.

I love how beggers ask for charity and drinkers in bars ask for a drink or two or three or four...

I love how throwing something down on the street from my inventory will have guards complaining not to do that.

I love how some people will reward me well for doing a small thing while someone else may reward me with something much less.

I love how each settlement has a Jarl.

I love how the palace in Whiterun feels like a place of authority and serious business.

I love the blood and its rich deep color when striking enemies.

I love how my characters heart beats when nearing death.

I love the sound when selecting perks and moving from one to the other.

I love the bombastic sound when a level up happens which adds extra oomph! as i finish off an enemy.

I love the placement of bones and remains which seem to be all over the place in SKYRIM. It never feels overdone and in many situations has a story or is a revealing clue to possible danger still lurking about.

I love the placement of shrines and small altars in the wilderness with people leaving offerings on them.
