The Mafia in New Vegas

Post » Fri Sep 04, 2009 12:29 pm

Okay, did anyone else thing the Mafia could've had a more prominent role in New Vegas? I think they could've easily been implemented as the biggest threat to the Strip's business assets and could've been a really cool faction to join. I don't know, maybe I had too many expectations about the Mafia in this game. The Omerta's seemingly are a weak faction and post little or no threat to House. Does anyone else crave for a Fallout game that implements the mob as a primary part of the game?

Im not sure what you meant by this but i beleive they are not a gang, there a tribe that house paid to help get vages on track again since he, himslef could not defend it with his robots by himself,

other wise the great khans would have wiped out vages and took it for themselves. then ncr then maybe legion.

Well I consider the Omerta's a gang, I don't know how you consider them tribals?

Play FO2 and go to New Reno. Plenty of Mafia there. Also, yes, the three casino families in New Vegas are former tribes.

The Omertas are a threat to The Strip, but I wont post any spoilers.

@Cowboy- The world could go back to pre-war comfort, and it'd still be post apocalypse. B-list Hollywood doom and gloom is cliche and should be given a courier treatment. IE shot in the head and thrown in a ditch.

Well, maybe a very small and useless faction like the kings. I don't see how hey could play any big role in the game. Obviously they'd be nothing compared to the NCR :flamethrower: Maybe in a DLC??

I was disappointed there isn't any bad blood between the mafias. I guess we can wait for a DLC.

The Omertas were just tribals until House recruited them (what is it with House and his hiring standards, anyway?). He gave them some books (or holotapes?) about the Vegas Mafia and they aped it, like those aliens in that Star Trek episode. The Chairmen came about pretty much in the same way. House must have shown them the original Ocean's 11 or something. I've no idea where the White Gloves got their shtick.

Here's a question for you lore experts, though -- are the organized criminals in New Reno meant to be directly descended from prewar groups, or are they just performing the same role in society? Are they REAL mafia?

Well, based on what I gathered, the major families in Reno are pre-war families, well, I dont know about th Wrights, but I think most of them were.

Every faction that has nothing OR little to do with the Main Quest is considered a minor faction

The NCR and Legion the only big ones

the time line in the fallout series is slowly advancing from a post apocalyptic game to that of a more modern time period. a good example of this is the NCR they have formed there own country from the ruins of California and have an army that is not an threat to people like Caesars legion but is actually forming a nation. one could compare the NCR to the united states in the 1800,s

Considering the NCR models itself after the Pre-War government, it makes sense. But I prefer the world socially progresses back to a more stable lawful world like it's Pre-War glories of yore.

The families of the strip really are like the mafia.Just to clear this up here; If you know something about the history of Vegas then you would know that back in the 50's pretty much of all the big casino's on the strip were owned and run by mob families. The reason none of the families in New Vegas are much of a threat is that Mr. House has almost absolute control of the strip and the families cooperate. Now if you go back in the past in reality, Howard Hughes(who House is modeled after somewhat) settled into Vegas and started buying many of the casinos there, getting most of it under his thumb. Sound like anything in the game?
Now back to the topic: there was a puny amount of quests for them, so yes they should absolutely had a more prominent role in New Vegas.

I think it would be alot more fun if the 3 families, plus the Kings and maybe the followers had more underhanded interplay between each other. But that would add between 8 - 15 more side quests to the game if it were done right,... more development time. It would be a nice add on DLC though.

Just like when Howard Hughes started buying casinos and legitimacy ran the mob out of Vegas, House did the same thing with New Vegas. The Omerta's and the Chairmen are representative of the lingering effects of the Mob on the strip.

I was disappointed that the 3 families had so fewer quests and such little presence in NV as a whole, I dealth with them all in a matter of hours (without just running in and gunning them all down), and then that was virtually the end of that...

The Omertas and the chairmen between them are very mafia-like tho, i agree
