The Main Quest is Epic!

Woot! I'm the Champion of Cyrodiill!! :run: :bunny: :twirl:  :intergalactic:

After 8 years of playing Oblivion I finally decided (for various reasons) to play all the way through the main quest and it was epic!! I just finished it and had to post about it. This is also the first time I visited the 'Oblivion Cheats, Hints, and Spoilers' section. Now I won't have to stay clear of it anymore. :D

** Main quest spoliers ahead **

Since the big battle for Bruma and the rest of the main quest it was soo hectic and gloriously violent and in total I must have died around 60 times just during that last bit.

The speech before the 3 small and then the big gate opened was epic. It was like in the movies with a big fight where all hell breakes loose.

And then followed by a countdown where I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off. So difficult I saved after defeating each enemy since that was a huge deal. I was fighting my way one foot at a time. I guess if I hadn't used Duke Patricks Melee mod it would have been a lot easier but with my mod setup (around 150 mods) it was nearly impossible.

Also the very last bit of the main quest with fighting in the Imperial city !! Holy! I had not seen that coming. And the last cut scene was soo epic. I can't believe my luck that no one ever spoiled the ending for me in all these years. I had no clue that was how it ended.

I have always read that the Oblivion's main quest wasn't very good so I had very low expectations but man I think it's awesome. (I haven't played elder scrolls 1-3 btw.)

So yeah I just wanted to get that off my chest

Glad you liked it!

I have my quarrels with Oblivion's main quest, but I'll say one thing for it. It had a couple of wonderfully cinematic moments. The first, for me, was when the Blades line up at Cloud Ruler Temple to salute Martin. The second was when we walk out of Bruma to the cheers of Bruma citizens. That walk out of Bruma in particular is one of the most vivid moments in an Elder Scrolls main quest that I can remember.

Yes FINALLLY a pro-Main Quest thread! Just kidding. Glad you enjoyed it after eight years (wow). I did the MQ twice, but the first time I tried the A-bomb killed my game right when my elf was inside the giant daedric tower (clock ticking down). Anyways, glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed it too, once I created a new character and made sure to keep my PS3's hours low enough that the A-bomb didn't kill that game, too.

How many gates did you close? I probably got to somewhere between 20 and 30. We just stuck to gates which were near civilization, roads, and such.

Closing gates was something I came to dread so I only closed 3 I think apart from all the gates you have to close. I felt that I had to rush since so much was at stake that I ended up taking one gate after another and that was made me dread them. If I had spread it out a bit more I think it would had been very different because I was actually looking forward to doing them when I first started the main quest. Also because of Duke Patricks melee mod which makes the daedric NPCs extremely tough. Many fights started and ended with them hitting me once. :pinch:

Those gates I closed was, like you, those which were too close to civilization that I felt I had to act.

Thanks.

I think my favorite scene is the last one in the temple of one.

I agree, I think the Oblivion Main Quest is epic.

I know alot of people criticize it, but I think it's great. Only a small percent of my characters do the Main Quest, but that's more out of role play. I think the story line and associated quests are very good and very varied.

I also actually like the way your character is the "assistant" to the main character in the quest, and not the actually main character (Martin). Also your character isn't like some long lost king, or super dude (dudess), but just a regular guy that stood up to challenges to save the world. That's kind of "different".

One of my favorite moments in the MQ is just after the Blade salute and speech, when Martin walks up to you and talks to you as a friend would, "Not much of a speech, was it?..." You get the sense of how uncertain and genuinely humble the guy is.

It's been so long (March, 2006) since I've been that far into the main quest that I don't even remember that conversation anymore. I should probably think about doing the main quest a second time. ;)
