The mammoths in the new released screenshot

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 5:14 am

It seems the woolly mammoths won't be exactly like earth's mammoths. In http://tesnexus.com/imageshare/images/2383757-1307229298.jpg they show four tusks instead of two. Besides, those tusks are engraved, maybe by giants (maybe there is a wild variety without those engravings).

To say the truth those two extra tusks give Nirnian mammoths an interesting alien look, very fitting in a TES game.

Yep, I'm glad they did that. It was also in the concept art.

They do have an alien look about them and at the same time still resembling the mammoths we know of.

I think the markings on the tusks are to let people know the mammoths belong to the giant in question, like a branded cow. If you slay a marked mammoth you'll have a giant posse on your ass.

I sure do like their style. The art direction is extraordinaty, as ususal.
But models appear too polygon-ized, as is the case with tusks, and too shallow, wooden and stiff - take fur.

Maybe watching these beasts in rotund motion will ease out my feelings.

they look cool... if you don't count the bad textures. also look at their trunks, apart from their feet they're both in the same position completely, i hope this is a mere coincidence, we wouldn't want mammoths with inanimate trunks would we?

The mammoths are cool, but even with the quirks, they still seem earthly to me. I'd like to see some stranger and more unique designs for some animals.

Hey that's a point I raised in another mammoth picture topic just yesterday :) I agree 100% that while they are "fine" models, they look a bit too "normal" and, well, generic to some extent and I would welcome more originals designs for creatures, or for the world of Skyrim as a whole.

It could be cool to open a topic to talk about that issue (originality and "uniqueness" seemingly lacking in what we've seen so far) on a larger scale than just mammoths.

The engravings are probably the work of giants, from this screenshot, I'm assuming that the giants tame them (Does this then mean that we'll see wild mammoths without the engravings? I guess we'll have to see.)

I never noticed them having four tusks until it was pointed out, though, interesting, I guess Bethesda wanted to distinguish them from real life mommoths, which is fine with me. I always knew there was no way Skyrim would be as exotic as Morrowind, but it's nice to see that Bethesda is still making an effort to make the setting feel more unique even though they want to make sure it fits the Psuedo-Viking theme of the Nords.

I'd imagine that the trunks are animated, however, it may be that this is their "default" position and the only move when performing certain animations, I guess we can't say for certain until we've seen them in action.

I still want to see the rag doll of one of those down a hill or sliding on the ice after being killed while trying to charge you...

I'll try that asap  Might be tough to bring one down though, especially if each of them is owned by a giant :cold:
