That's absolutley hilarious, but I'm not sure if it's in support of the new map or against it, I'm thinking the former.

It's fine for the style that Skyrim is going for. Rugged, yet with a shine to it. I think the fact people are fine with how the menus look and not how the map looks is just a placement of how much one wants all pretty things to be practical. I like hand drawn maps, but I am completely cool with Skyrim using this method.

disagree 100% I dislike both the new map and the menus. I dont want to see some fancy high tech ipod scrolling display while looking at my items, and i think the functionality of it on the pc is going to be terrible. I will absolutely hate it if i have to scroll through everything ipod style. Playing on pc id rather have all info available and infront of me at once.

And i dont see where you are getting that a 3D Google maps gps map fits into the rugged nord culture of skyrim.

It looks nice, I just think it's so wrong for this kind of game.

Not only does a parchment map suit the fantasy setting better, but I think the simpler design aids the sense of discovery in an open-world game. I really enjoy finding things out for myself and feeling lost at times - for me that's half the fun of an open-world game. The 3D map almost looks like it's too good at what it does.

agree with this completely.

I have not yet seen this map, anyone know where I can find a picture or video of it?

[EDIT] Okay I found a video showing the map, it might be pretty cool after you mess around with it. As of right now I think I prefer the Oblivion style map, but may change my mind once I get to use it.

I like the new map, I would like to see more of it before I decide if I like it more than the others. I want to see stuff like zooming, marking, camera rotation, & more

Well...in a perfect world they'd allow people to buy parchment maps in stores that don't update automatically, rather you have to buy the new map for an area in order to update the map along with the ability to mark up said map - plus allowing people to use the really neat 3D one we've seen so far if they wanted.

So the real question is if Skyrim is a perfect world or not. :P

I absolutely love the map. It's amazing. It's going to be much more appealing to the eyes during long marathon game sessions. I can't wait to get quality time with it and also see the city and dungeon maps.

It looks cool, but I need to use it in game before I can really decide if I like it or not.

Ok, idea for those who RP or just don't like the 3D map. How about you keep a sheet of paper and a pen nearby and make your own map as you play. You can add notes, map dungeons, and it will only show as much as you know so there a grander sense of discovery.

Thats actually not a bad idea, I might try that, even though I don't mind the map.

Functions in literally the exact same manner as the maps in other games, it just looks nicer now. To me it's no more immersion-breaking than the inventory menu or a health bar.

Like I said, we'll have to see it in action, to find out just how much "looks nicer" gets in the way of "function". I can think of plenty of ways that a 3D map (complete with those silly clouds we could see in the video) would be harder to just use, compared to the Oblivion map.

I only hope that they take it even further and make dungeon maps 3D too. A bit problem with TES games so far is that they don't represent multi-level dungeon maps clearly enough. Clairvoyance will help with this, but having a rotatable 3D local map would be nice too.

Also, making your own maps? Old-school! :mohawk:

Daggerfall had 3D rotatable dungeon maps.

Only way I can think of is the clouds you mention, which I imagine would dissipate as you zoom in. If you can think of more, please share them. I'm interested in knowing what you're thinking.

Well, one obvious one is.... if the map view is at an angle (i.e, not looking straight down), will map markers be obscured if they're in valleys behind mountains? In which case you'll need to rotate the map around to see certain things. (And how much does rotating & zooming mess with the whole "recognize the areas of the map, which way is N/S/E/W, and which direction you need to go" thing)

Another question is how fast the transition is between First Person view -> looking at map -> back to First Person. (Which might or might not matter, depending on the feel. I know some people have complained that pulling up the pipboy in FO3 was too slow for them, whereas I didn't have a problem with it because it fit the setting.)
