The map is UTTERLY USELESS

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 9:41 pm

Who the hell came up with this idea? What was wrong with the standard map from Morrowind or Oblivion?

What do I look on the map for? Roads. I need to see where I am. With Skyrim's map, you can't see jack [censored]. Clouds are always blocking the way, and if it happens to be a really clear day then enjoy squinting like mad until you eventually spot a major road. You've got no chance with a small path.

Also, being able to see the layout of cities and mountains right from the beginning of the game apparently through complete black magic or some [censored] sort of ruins the mystery of what lies ahead.

tl;dr the map svcks, where is the Creation Kit so I can get rid of this?

I agree with the map needing roads. Even started a request thread in the mods forum about it.

Can't wait until the creation system comes out. Having to open the physical map every time you want to find out if you're somewhere near a road is a pain.

Edited for typos.

They included a physical map for a reason, don't be lazy.

I got a physical map, though not a particularly detailed one, with my copy, but I doubt one comes with a digital download.

Yes, because the physical map displays where you are in the game and displays the locations you have found.

its a bad sign when the pre-order bonus for a game is a more effective map than the in-game one...

There is an INI tweak that allows you to zoom down to ground level.

It won't help you much, though; roads are hardly noticeable even when walking on them because of all the snow.

The only thing I use the map for (besides fast travel) is to find passes through mountains when I want to get on the other side of them, without needing to go all the way around them.

Agree. Pretty, but impractical, and makes no sense why you'd have an aerial view in the first place.

I completely agree. And to whoever mentioned the paper map, guess what, most PC gamers do digital download these days and for us there is no paper map.

Sure the map looks pretty, but it's no good if you just want to find your way from A to B or navigate back to the nearest road. All shine and no substance, please Bethesda for future games give us a map that is useful for navigation as well as pretty to look at! Or if you can't do both, being useful should take priority.

I love Skyrim and it's one of my favourite games ever so far, but I cannot blind myself to the few flaws in the game, this being one.

Morrowind was too revealing, Oblivion got it right.

I agree. The map is bad. Especially in this game where so much of the land is unusable to walk through and you have to use the roads. In Oblivion I could go cross country all the time and rarely get stuck and I had a map that showed me where all the roads were even though I considered them to be mostly optional. In this game, if I'm not on the road, chances are I'm going to have to double back and find a road. So what do they give me? A map without roads marked on it. Hmpf.

Edit:

Oh, yeah, I bought through Steam. If I had a paper map it would be on my wall next to my PC because I need it.

I like the idea of the map being 3-D. That's a nice touch. But the clouds are really getting on my nerves, I know it's supposed to look realistic but the cloud are just too damn high!

Who knows why they put such a short zoom in and out function on the map, it is all but useless until near a mountain.

Use your compass.

Navigate by using a straight line of travel (azimuth) to a known place near where you want to go. Not really that hard in my opinion; not trying to sound mean. I rather like the map.

From a roleplay standpoint, that makes no sense. Take a chance of getting lost in the wilderness (or having to go straight over a mountain), or take the well-traveled roads that you know will lead to your destination?

I know not everyone RPs their character, but I like to. Plus, a lot of interesting encounters happen on the roads.

It would be cool to have roads and paths added to the map as we travel them for the first time. In other words, we wouldn't know where they lead at first, but as we travel along a road, the part we've traveled is added to the map.
