The Mass Effect series

Post » Mon Oct 25, 2010 2:01 am

I saw there was a thread for the DA-series, and thought I'd start one for the ME-series as well. Anyone here playing it? I tried ME2 on our PS3, being very sceptical since sci-fi isn't really my thing. When I hear the word "sci-fi", I think of rubberhead aliens, mediocre acting and technobabble. But I knew ME2 had gotten great reviews, it was a good RPG and it was Bioware. I greatly enjoyed Dragon Age, and thought I'd give it a fair go. At first I was very confused and overwhelmed, but continued to play - and ended up with one of the better gaming experiences so far.

Unfortunately, ME1 won't be out for PS3, so I won't have the complete continuity. But I'm borrowing a X-box from a friend, and am playing through the first game there. I am also reading the ME novels. Finished the first one yesterday, and started on the second one.

What are your experiences with the series?

Do post up what you think about both games.

I really like the first one, was very epic, very impressive.

The second one was good, but not super spectacular, which I was expecting. To be fair, its really rare that you find sequels like that that are betterer than the first.

Spoiler
I found some of the game to be boring and not interesting and engaging, not grabbing my attention well enough, not like the first one. (Talking about ME2)

I haven't gotten that far into ME1 yet. I'm only at Feros, having gotten all my squad members. I have to say, though, so far I like ME2 better. But that is probably just because I'm more used to it. I find ME1 harder. But I find it hard to measure them up against each other, it's really just one story flashed out in three games. And I absolutely love the story. The more I read about the world, the more I am intrigued by it. I love all the choices you can make, and the consequences you get - even in future games. That is almost ground-breaking in games, isn't it? Having choices you made in ME1 affect the world and story in ME3 as well.

Anyway, I'm rambling. So far I prefer the missions in ME2. They weren't as long, and the were more of them. I think I prefer more and shorter missions than fewer and longer. In addition, I'm not too fond of driving with Mako as you do a lot in the first game.

Only thing I didn't like about ME2 was that the character and leveling system felt a little dumbed down from the original. They're both among my favorite games though, great series.

Mass Effect 1&2 are both very good games, even if they got some weak parts here and there (like the side quests and exploring in the first game). One thing I find interesting though, is that all the enemies and their loot is level scaled just like Oblivion, yet they haven't recived complaints about that at all :P

Can't remember anything about Feros, no images pop up in my head. Just remember the story lol.

Some of my friends watched me play through a bunch of video games over the summer.
There was Fable 2, Final Fantasy 13, Bioshock 2, and Mass Effect 2. Final Fantasy 13 and Mass Effect 2 had no audience. Basically, I just called them to watch the ending of ME2, I never finished FF13.

But for Fable 2 and Bioshock 2 I had an audience through the entire game. Can you image, people who dont play video games were interested in these 2 games from beginning to end. They got caught up in watching it and had to watch the game to the end.

Speaking of audiences, Street Fighter 4 & SSF4 always gets an audience, people get so into it. I remember my friend was having a party and everyone was chillin havin a nice time and then someone said they played SF4 so we poped it in and played. No lie, everyone there got on SF4 that night to play.

Those bot pretty damn good games. I am not a fan of them dumbing down the sequel, but I still really enjoyed both games. Here's to them (by the grace of god) to make the 3rd fall somewhere in the middle of the two.

I'm gonna get ME2 as a birthday present, but I have a PS3, and none of my friends as ME1 on the Xbox or PC for that matter. Might just get Dragon Age 2, seeing as how it comes 5 days after my birthday.

It took me a long time to warm up to the tone of Mass Effect 2, after playing the hell out of Mass Effect. When I think of Mass Effect 1, its so neutral in terms of atmosphere. Mass Effect 2 seems to love to paint everything in shades of red and yellows. You kind of get confused when you come upon a scenic waterfall or even simple neon lighting.

Mass Effect 1 has an amazing story. Mass Effect 2's is up to par with a typical game story, but it also has a few plot holes. A lot of work went into each quest in comparison to Mass Effect 1, though a lot of missions play and feel the same.

I loved Mass Effect. It remains one of my favourite games of all time. I didn't expect Mass Effect 2 to live up to the brilliance of the first game, and I was shocked when it was even better. Mass Effect 2 is probably my favourite game ever after Oblivion and Morrowind.

To be honest, I'm a bit tired of the "dumbed down" talk. Mass Effect is a trilogy, and they will all be on the same generation of console. How dumbed down can it be? I disagree with that statement completely. I've read that some ME-fans thought ME2 played out too much as a FPS, but I get the same amount of shooter feeling in ME1 as in ME2. Sometimes I think fans are hit too strong with complainofnewestgameintheseriesities. (I don't mind people preferring ME1 to ME2, I just don't agree with the constant talk of the newest game in a series always being dumbed down).

As for the story, ME2 is more character oriented. Just like Two Towers, it works like a build-up to the final confrontation. I don't view them separately when it comes the story, seeing as it's all one story.

Who's your favourite character and race? I like most of them, but my favourite character is Garrus (and Turians are m favourite race).

What I would love, though, was for BioWare to make a brand new ME game after ME3. A completely different story, where you can create a character yourself, and choose between different races/species. Then you start out on different planets depending on what race you pick, kind of like the various Origins in DA. That would be awesome.

I love the mass effect series due to it being a space faring adventure. When Mass Effect 1 was being developed and they were showcasing it I was initially unimpressed and ignored it. A couple weeks before release I started to look at it again and decided to get it since I had a bunch of Best Buy credit at the time. I fell in love with the game and the world very quickly. Then ME2 came out and while it wasn't what I expected as I didn't follow the development of it either, a great deal of enjoyment was still had.

Plus for me ME filled the voil that KOTOR left.

Both games are good, while ME2 improves what ME1 fails, it also dumb it down in the other fields, but still, ME2 has less complains from me than ME1.

Random thoughts:
  • Meko driving svcks, but I missed it greatly when they removed it from ME2.
  • When I first heard of ME1, I was very hyper about being able to play as an alien. I wasn't paying attention to the previews.

Wrex and the Krogans. I'm a svcker for the proud warrior race guys. Didn't like Grunt much though, although he became better as his character developed.

I can't pick a favourite between ME1 and ME2, they both did different things right and wrong. Exploring svcked in both, the planet scanning system was probably even more boring than driving the Mako. Combat and character levelling were average in both games, though I prefer ME1 on that point since adepts (my favourite class) were totally overpowered, which I like when playing a mage-type character in a single player game. I found that in ME1 the main story was better, while in ME2 the character development of your companions was worked out better. I love both games and am looking forward to the finale.

I very much agree with this. ME1 had to be story-heavy, seeing as it was the introduction game, presenting the world and the story. ME2 chose to go with character depth, something I liked very much. That makes me interested in seeing which characters will follow over to ME3. I hope some of them will, it will be too bad if you spend that much time getting to know our squad mates only to have them gone for the real ending.

Any of you read the novels/comics?

I think most of them will follow over. When I was playing ME2 I felt that the entire point of the game was just to set up your party for the next game, so in ME3 you already got that over with so we can jump right in an epic conclusion. I'm curious to see how we're going to kill thousands of Reapers though, after all the trouble that Sovereign put us through ^_^

Nothing to worry about, a fleet of Deus ex Machinae are massing at galactic core :P

Seriously, i am curious to see if they can pull that off even semi-plausibly. Personally any ending that results in complete destruction of the reapers will not (most likely) be one for me.

I got to a certain bit of ME and just couldn't get past it. :whistling:

I'm absolutely RUBBISH at maneuvering the vehicle and generally end up dead. I really need to give it a go again though. I think I'd prefer to play it on the PC and before it was the 360 :D

Get out of the Mako and fight on foot when enemies show up, your party has much more firepower than that rubbish little tank :)

I may well be the only one, but i absolutely love the Hammerhead. Fast and agile, the best vehicle based platforming ever. Sure it has cartboard for an armor, and the long-range missiles aren't as fun Mako's weapon, but still i love the Firewalker missions

Heh, I actually avoided the Firewalker missions (just about the only side missions in ME2 I didn't do) because I didn't like flying the vehicle.

Both games are good although I prefer the 1st one because, one it's an RPG and two the storyline is much better in the 1st one. Mass Effect 2 is TPS with minimal RPG settings if any. I hope that's tweaked a bit for Mass Effect 3 but I doubt it. Mass Effect 3 will probably be a Mass Effect 2 clone which isn't bad but it won't be good and certainly will pale in comparasion to Skyrim.
